The Turtle Treasure

These pictures that I am posting today epitomize what I love about children -

 .

That's Jacob in the far pasture running towards the house with his new found treasure.

.

As he came closer, I could see that he had something very special in his net.

This is what I love about children - the excitement and enthusiasm for something as sweet and simple as a turtle.

With all of my picture taking, though, I forgot to take a close-up picture of the actual turtle.  Suffice it to say, it was something to get excited about.  It was big!!

 .

He did find one even bigger after this, but it was "scary" big - as in, "Don't touch," says mom.  It was a snapping turtle.

.

I love it too when my kids find a treasure from nature. We kept a toad recently for a few days. I am glad to let them go when we are done studying them! Of course, my kids want to keep them forever. Have a lovely weekend. We are going camping at the Dunes Sun-Tuesday.

Are you ever WITHOUT your camera? LOL
Will J keep it as a pet or let it go? Do you worry about samonella? We had a red racer turtle for years. The kids took him out of his aquarium and harnessed him up to Lego vehicles so he could pull them around. The cat thought Bullwinkle was fun, as well.

Oh neat! I love the pictures of all the action. We used to have tons of snapping turtles around here but haven't seen very many lately. I'm glad though...my 12 year old used to catch them and I used to worry about his fingers getting snapped.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Hi Antoinette,
Boys making discoveries - you really captured it well on camara. I've always loved turtles! Every once in a while a painted turtle will make it's way up to the house (to lay eggs, I suspect) from the river - and that is such a long ways for such a little critter - and up hill too, just amazing. We have fun looking at them and Anna always has to give it a name, and then we send it on it's way. I also think it's neat when we visit the Atlantic coast of FL - how they encourage everyone to keep their lights off or their curtains drawn during turtle egg-laying season. Did your son keep the turtle?

That reminds me of when I was a little girl, we lived on a lake and I recall being told that the old neighbor lady had two sons that were evidently deceased. When I asked what happened, I was told that her sons' boat was tipped over by giant snapping turtles in our lake and drown. lol, to this day I don't know the truth about that one - I do know we did have some HUGE turtles that would come up to our garden from the lake to lay their eggs. Perhaps it was just to keep me from wandering too close to the water or perhaps it was just to keep nosey little girls from asking too many questions. lol

Hello friend !

I have to appoligize. I thought I commented here on this Wonderful post. I have found that happening here and there. ((sigh)) This is a GREAT post and it shows the joy of boyhood soooooooo well. [0= You have a wonderful piece of land and you can tell you and your family use it to its fullest. Turtles are soooooo neat but I sure would not want to get bit by one, lol. You have been well missed and as some are probably noticing that I had a hard time getting around to visit everyones posts. I am hoping now that most of the garden is in that I can get around a bit more.

I am very sorry about your computer challenges and I pray that it is all fixed now. I also hope you are able to join tomorrow too. I am already racking my brain in what to share, lol. I only have so many things so I have turned more to what is going on around me but how many gardening S&T's do people want ??? LOL.

Sending you blessing and ((HUGS)) my SSiC

Jun. 18, 2009 - Just Chatting in Response

Thanks for dropping by earlier today. I was hoping to come by an find some grandbaby pictures or foal photos - maybe next time...

Our screen door was really easy - we just bought a cheapy plain screen door and some small fretwork from the local lumber store. I painted it all white and Jeff just screwed them in - and walaa, an expensive Victorian screen door for a fraction of the price. I love it too!

Yes, I agree, putting all that $ out for flowers, only for them to die isn't fun. I lost my hydrangea that I bought last fall - we had a really tough winter and a lot of people lost trees as well.

I love bird houses too - esp. the bluebird houses - I love seeing my little blue friends come back year after year and their brilliant color.

And yes, I am working some with my 2 yr. old, Sundance. He is getting to be a big boy - I'm guessing he is nearing 15h. I usually can easily put a blanket & saddle on him and he loves the bit (go figure). He leads well. He keeps wanting to chew/bite though and knows he is being bad, but will do a quick attempted bit & then pulls away quick before you can hit him or even when I do get him, it doesn't seem to make a difference. Our farrier will be out in a couple of weeks and I'm going to ask him about what more I can do - Sundance seems to think it's a game. Also, our trainer is going to work with me and show me how to start him lunging. I've tried on my own, but he just either plants his feet and stands there or goes crazy and I can't hold him. I don't think he is ready for me to flop on his back yet, still need to work on the basics

Well, I gotta run and pick up the girls from 1 room schoolhouse. ttyl

About Me

Welcome to our ranch! Come, sit on our porch, have some tea, and stay a while. Were going to have a lot of fun chatting. Bring the kids, too, as we've got lots of room to play, horses to ride, cats and kitties to cuddle, gentle dogs to pet, and baby chickens to look at and hold. We can take trail rides around the alfalfa field, wade through the creek, take a paddle boat to the island on the lake, go fishing, or explore the Black Walnut Forest. There's no hurry around here. We'll just meander about and maybe even pack a picnic basket - Ranch Shekinah is abounding with Mulberry trees, wild blackberries and raspberries, an orchard of apple trees, and a herb garden.
