Word notebook
Posted in notebooking
Today, I had my daughter start a word notebook.
Three ring-binder
Twenty six dividers
paper
Every time my daughter learns a new word or a word she has trouble spelling she will put the word, along with the definition into her notebook.
My daughter has severe dyslexia and often spelling simple words, and words that we use everyday, she struggles with. Often times she asks me how to spell the same word, day after day. I am hoping that this notebook will help her so that she can often refer back to it, rather than asking me how to spell something over and over.

What a great idea! I have starting notebooking this year and if you don't mind I might try this idea. My ds(10) is a horrible speller. He does OK for tests but then can't use the words in his writing. Maybe this idea will help him too.

Dear eclecticeducation,
Please do try the notebook with idea with your son. I hope it helps him too. One of the purposes of my blog is to share my ideas so that others can use them in their homes as well. Have fun!

Great idea! I had a friend (from 5th - 12th grade) that in high school would open the dictionary and choose a word a week to learn and would use it as often as possible. I have told my kids about it and they want to do that too. Maybe the notebook would be a great addition to that ;) Have a great Thanksgiving :)

Hi Dianna,
I liked your idea about the spelling notebook. We have one here also and it has helped so much. My dd has dyslexia also, so I understand your frustrations at having to help spell words over and over. Something fun that dd likes is to do her spelling words in bright colors - each word a different color. It helps her to keep the picture of the word in her mind and when she writes it with a marker, and says it out loud at the same time it seems to stick in her long term memory better. This is called full-neurological learning and has done wonders for our study times. Also colored flash cards help.
So glad I am not alone. What a blessing that your dd has such a wonderful Mommy to help her with the gift of dyslexia. :-)

Dianna We did that but ours is a bit different but hey we are all different so we do what is best for our child :) We call ours the Word Locker. My daughter loves it. We also have a journal that I write letters to daughter she writes back this is helping her with her grammar, spelling, sentence structure and penmenship.
God bless

Rachael - Glad to 'see' you! We try to learn a new word every week.. I think everyone should do it. =)
Kelly - I didn't think about having my dd write her words with different colors. I should know better, because that is one of the ways I learn too. I love using different colors when I write.
Jo Ann - I have started journals with my two oldest and it has been wonderful for their writing. Miss ya!
