Rachel asked me what we are using to teach American Sign Language.
We are using Instant Immersion American Sign Language CD-ROMs. The kids and I are enjoying this way of learning. It has videos of certified ASL instructors or members of the Deaf and hard of hearing community demonstrating more than 1,000 signs.
There are a total of 5 CD-ROMs.
The first CD is an illustraded dictionary which uses a 3-D annimated person in which you can move around as to see how the sign is done.
The second CD is HyperSign Jr. which is perfect for pre-schooler or early readers. It uses pictures, videos and games to teach about 450 words.
The third video is the starter CD which is geared for ASL novices. It consists of 5 lessons covering about 400 signs.
The forth CD is the ASL Condensed Dictionary. It is a wonderful resource which has over 1,000 signs all demonstrated by videos.
Finally, the fifth video is an introduction to ASL and goes over the history of ASL and teaches fingerspelling, phrases and numbers.
I have been having fun re-learning along with my kids. It is amazing how much you forget something when you don't use it on a daily basis anymore. I really like this immersion style of learning a new language. My children have been picking up ASL quickly and retaining what they learn! Bonus!

Apr. 19, 2007 - How great!!
This is really funny!! We had a deaf choir at our church last week and just loved it. It really renewed our interest in learning sign language and I have been looking for something to use! I'll check out this program and see what I think!
God be with you,
Debby
