Falling Behind
Posted in Homeschooling
Well we are getting over a bout of stomach flu here and have not done school all week. We are already behind in math and struggling to catch up to where I would like for us to be at this time. So in doing the schedule for next year I decided that once a month I would schedule a star week. This will be a week where nothing is planned. If we are behind we will use it for catch up. If we are all caught up we will do fun learning activities that week. This will also be useful as we are a very spotaneous family and we never know when we might take a few days to go somewhere. One thing I love about homeschooling is that if we go places during the week its not nearly as crowded. What are some things you have tried that help you stay on track yet remain flexible?

We're going to start school this fall for the first time with my two oldest (pre-k and K) so I'm not exactly an expert . . . but we're planning on only doing school 4 days a week, even when they're older. My husband is a pastor and "works" Sunday and takes Friday off as family day. We just bought a motorhome and plan to do lots of Thurs. night trips (get the best camp sites cause we'll beat the weekend rush). So that's how we're going to plan to keep a more flex schedule. I'm in no rush. I used to be a public school teacher and know that my kids already know years more than their peers. A veteran homeschool mom and a mentor of mine regularly tells me, "A little math and reading/English, and you're kids are way ahead of the game . . ." She has four fantastic grown kids - so when she tells me to relax, I do. I think the three week on, one week off sounds great. Especially since you're going right through the summer!

First off, thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment!
So you have 5 kids too? And one is under a year? Hmmm we have much in common....yay!
I think your star week idea is marvelous! I also think that the last comments idea of taking off one day a week every week is great too. That is what we will be doing again this year. It was nice to know we only had 4 days of pushing through. Also I am making a planner this year, which I dont normally do really, however it will not have dates of when things should be complete. I will list all that we need to get accomplished for this year, but I cannot say this day at this time. We will go by either the month or the week for accomplishments. Otherwise things always come up, we get behind, and I begin to feel overwhelmed. I am meeting with another hs mom tomorrow with my new planner so she can help me with setting it in order. It should be great, and she understands how I need order, but not micromanagement. Okay...I just droned on forever...sorry! LOL

We take Fridays off as well, but I really like Friday to be a day of fun activities. Maybe nature walks and science experiments and crafts and games......Thanks for the comments. Keep the ideas coming.
