May. 29, 2006 - Balance...am I the only one?

Being completely transparent, I would have to say that balance is a tough thing for me.  I am a type A, all-or-nothing sort of person.  If I'm going to do it, I'm going to do it all the way.  I have a really awful Mary Kay sales story to back that up, but I'll save it for another post.

I am the director of children's ministry (I prefer that to children's pastor!) for our growing church.  It is an exciting and often times terrifying responsibility that seems to be taking on a life of its own.  Having been with the church since it began almost five years ago, we are building the ministry from the ground up.  I am finding it hard to do only what needs to be done to maintain the ministry.  Status quo simply isn't good enough.  There are so many things I want to do...so many ideas I have.  Remember my all-or-nothing confession?  Yikes!

Here's an example...I looked around at various curriculums to use as a change of pace for our summer program.  Not finding anything that would suit our needs, I decided to write one myself.  Where do I get these crazy ideas?!?  It is coming together nicely, but I know I've earned several more gray hairs in the process.  Somehow, I've got to learn, not necessarily to "settle" for something less than I want, but...well, maybe that is what I need to learn!  Maybe less is OK sometimes.

I know the Lord has called me to this place and to this position, but more importantly, He has called me to my family and to homeschooling FIRST.  I am struggling to find a good balance between the two.  I pray every day for His wisdom and guidance and each day He is faithful.

Well...I know this post isn't terribly interesting to anyone else, but it's been extremely therapeutic for me!  Thanks for hanging in there with me.

Balance, or as we call it in our family "that fine line", is difficult to find sometimes, isn't it?! Keep seeking God's wisdom, He'll show you that perfect balance!

Wow! I'm impressed with you writing your own curriculum.
Thanks for your comment on my blog about my mom. I'd love to write you a note and can't find your e-mail. Could you e-mail me and give it to me so that I might write to you? Thanks!!

maybe because I'm so old it seems like it still... I did that. We joined a brand new church in 1978 and as I had experience teaching 3rd grade [5 yrs] in the Methodist Church, I volunteered to help with the Children's Ministry. Very Different! The Director was much like you and did not find what she wanted. So she wrote her own. She encouraged me toI start"a Puppet Ministry and on Wednesday she would call and tell me what she was going to teach on the following Sunday -- could I write a skit, story, whatever. What fun! Creating is so invigorating! I'd get a yellow tablet and wait for God. He did pretty good, actually. It was never boring and I can't remember any stress. But I don't think we used that word back then :>). Enjoy it... it's a great opportunity. And you really can do it and do it well. I'm sure.
Be blessed.
