Aug. 28, 2006 - Shouldn't you be in school?

I gathered up the kids this morning and headed for the grocery store.  Schooling in the afternoon leaves our mornings free to get things done while the toddler is still happy.

Once we arrived at the store it dawned on me that today was the first day of school for our local public system...hence the many stares we received.  One woman was bold enough to ask my oldest why he wasn't in school today.  When she heard his reply she said, "Well, shouldn't you still be doing school this morning?"  Sigh...

Later, while bagging the groceries, my sons were guessing how many items we had purchased.  One of them said, "My hypothesis is..."  Yes, we're homeschooled and proud of it!

It is so hard to get others to think outside of the box of their perceived way that school should be. Whenever I am out peoples comments never cease to amaze me and they never cease; ) When talking to some people about HSing I tell them to add up how much time is spent waiting in lines, walking down halls, all the kids to get on the same page and the list goes on and then you only have a small amount of actual learning time. Schooling at home allows for schooling all the time any time. Even creating a Hypothesis on the grocery store. People are funny that's for sure.

Sometimes we don't get them that close together. That really was a blessing! It is so hard to get people to think outside the box. I remember the year we got some freebie desks from some people. Some friends of ours were SO RELIEVED that they finally had desks. Let the learning commence. ;-)
