Oct. 17, 2006 - Homeschool survey

The term homeschool is a relatively new one. Spell check separates the term into two words, but "homeschooling" is shown as one. Today I noticed a notation in Spelling Power about the differing opinions on the spelling. They gave the examples of "public school" and "private school" being two words as their justification for separating the two. I have always spelled it as one.

I would like to know your opinion. Is it "homeschool" or "home school"?

It is definitely one word. Here is what I have seen . .
When homeschooling is spelled seperately it is generally
done by those who, as you stated in your blog, associate it
with another 'type' of school and those who claim to know
about homeschooling but don't.
I have not met a seasoned homeschooler who spells homeschooling
seperately.Any time I see anything in the community offered
for homeschoolers it sends up a big red flag for me if it's two.

I always type it as one word, and when spell checker catches it, I always ignore it.
I guess the two word spelling makes me think more of school at home. To me, homeschooling is a lifestyle not a school that happens to be at home, so hence, the one word spelling.

We like the two words together as a compound word... after all, they DO go together. ;-)

I wanted to thank you for the Scripture verse you shared on my blog, in regards to our move, etc... I greatly appreciate it. It was a blessing and an encouragement to read.

Homeschool is one word. Public and private schools are types of buildings that are there for one purpose. Homeschool is what we do in all of our life, together.
