Hilo Homeschooling Conference

Posted in Big Island

Yes, Hilo is having their first Homeschooling Conference! I received this information about the conference today:

The Lighthouse HICHE group in Hilo is excited about helping to sponsor a homeschool conference January 5th & 6th.  Gregg Harris is coming here to speak to us from Oregon.  We just finalized everything and got the brochures and registration forms printed. Now we need to spread the word.  If you are interested in a brochure, please let me know.  I can e-mail you a PDF file or if you would like several for your church or group,  I can mail them to you.  If you know other groups whom I can contact, please also pass their information on to me.  Here are some of the details:

Dates:  Friday, January 5, 2007 at 7:00 pm - free  sessions open to the public with nursery provided
Saturday, January 6, 2007 from 8:30 am - 4:30 pm - open by registration only

Registration Costs:  $15.00 per individual or $25.00 per couple with early registration of $10.00 per individual or $20.00 per couple.  We will have box lunches available on Saturday for $6.00.  We are offering a children's program on Saturday as well, if you need help with that.

Location:  Hilo Missionary Church on Komohana Street in Hilo

Our featured speaker is Gregg Harris.  He is a homeschooling husband and father of seven children ages 6-adult.  He is the author of  The Christian Home School and father of Joshua Harris, author of I Kissed Dating Good-bye.  From 1981-1995 he presented nearly 20 homeschool seminars a year around the country.  Since 1995 he has been staying home more to be with his family and help pastor their local church. You can read more about him and his work at www.nobleinstitute.org.  The brochure has much more information about Gregg and his accomplishments in the homeschool community.  I am just mentioning a few here. We are very privileged to have him come see us as he hardly ever travels any more. I know he will be a great encouragement to those of us already homeschooling and can help answer questions for those just beginning or thinking about it.  The conference is open to everyone - you don't have to be homeschooling to attend.  We have tried to keep the cost to a minimum so that everyone interested can come.

I think that covers the basics.  Please call me (982-7371) if you have questions or would like more information.

Blessings,
Suzanne

UPDATE:  Another contact person for this conference is Sylvi Cook. Her phone number is 959-4268, and her email address is babyxiao@hotmail.com. If you would like a pdf file brochure emailed to you, Sylvi would be happy to send it along.

Lighthouse HICHE February Newsletter

Posted in Big Island

I would have liked to get the latest newsletter out to you all before the first of the month, but I was having technical difficulties with my computer.  Also, I apologize for not being able to load the heading of the newsletter which has the new logo and the graphics for the new logo which appears on the shirts that are now avaiable to buy.  More info, please read the newsletter.  Happy February!

-Heather

PLEASE feel free to pass this newsletter along (by email or by print) to others who may be interested.

1st Monday PARENT MEETING

Monday, February 6th, 7-9 pm:  Chris Garboden will share lessons and info. from the Oahu leadership conference where she was able to meet with CHOH coordinators.

Afterwards will be a “TIPS & TRICKS” session – so come prepared with 2 or 3 of the best things that help you homeschool.  It can relate to any aspect - your schedule, how you implement fun into your curriculum, how you occupy the younger while you teach the older, identifying your kids’ learning styles,  how you keep your sanity,  etc.  for the purpose of offering each other support & encouragement!   Please come join us.

PARENT’S WHITE ELEPHANT GRAB BAG!  As part of this support and share encouragement session, all those who want to, please bring a “small”, already owned,  give away gift, wrapped and without any name tag on it.  No one should buy anything – just use something nice you already have.  Only bring one if you already have something small at your house in nice condition.  You do not have to bring a gift if you have no time, have no extra nice little things lying around, or would just simply rather not.  If you bring one, then you get to take one.

Policy Reminder:  Parent Meetget to ings are for Parents.  We ask you to arrange childcare for your kids during this time (other than nursing infants).  We realize that occasionally this is not possible.  Thus, IF you can not find childcare, and IF your children are well behaved AND old enough to occupy themselves, then you may bring them.  Please do not abuse this option.  Thank you.   (If you really have no childcare available to you, and you need the benefit of the Parent Meeting, especially for those parents who are single parents or who are new to homeschooling, please contact one of us, and we will try to help you find a workable solution.  No guarantees J).

1st Friday SERVICE  DAY:

Friday, February 3rd  - LIFE CARE:  11:00 – 12:00pm.  Visit the special folks at LIFE CARE who really look forward to this time, and always ask when we can come back.  Liza Kobayashi and Heather Rosario will lead us in song.   If you have not yet joined us for this service activity, please come out and do so – it is a wonderful virtue to teach our kids.  For more information, contact Heather Rosario at 969-1953.

Also 3rd Friday Special Service Project:

FEBRUARY: 17th OPERATION GRATITUDE”.   Meet at 9am at Grace Baptist Church.   Please bring sewing machine if you can.  Youth Summit Delegation’s service project, spearheading local support for “Operation Gratitude” to express appreciation to our service men and women.  We will be making “cool” ties and fleece neck gators, as has been requested for the soldiers, and also will put together some care packages.  For further details, please contact Robin Jahraus, 969-3621 or rltj@hawaii.rr.com
