Generation Joshua Summer Camp
Do you have a politically minded son or daughter who’s looking for an opportunity to hone political skills? Or do you have a child who just wants to have a blast in a fast-paced, jam-packed week of fun and exciting activities? Generation Joshua’s 2008 summer camp does all this and more. Located on the campus of Patrick Henry College, the Gen J camp is a week for teens to discover how they can play a vital role in impacting our nation for Christ in the civic and political arena.
In this camp, students will participate in the legislative process and conduct a mock presidential election. The week is packed with learning the nuts and bolts of the political process and how to be strong advocates for what you believe. The camp will show your teen how to write legislation, hold hearings, develop party platforms, run voter registration drives, and almost everything else associated with the political process.
In the midst of each day’s busy activities, students will be able to hear from speakers and advocates ranging from:
- Alex and Brett Harris, joint authors of Do Hard Things and founders of the Rebelution conferences
- Rick Green, former Texas state representative, founder of Patriot Academy and speaker for WallBuilders
- Mike Smith, president of HSLDA
To cap the week off, on July Fourth the group will take a tour of the nation’s capital and end the day watching a fireworks show from the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
This camp offers tremendous opportunities to learn essential political skills, forge friendships, hear amazing speakers, and visit Washington, DC.
Dates: June 29-July 5, 2008
Location: PHC Campus in Purcellville, VA
Cost: $495. A $50 discount is available for HSLDA member families

2007 Astronaut Lacy Veach Day of Discovery
The 2007 Day of Discovery is scheduled for Saturday, October 27th, at Punahou School. This program fills up quickly, so get the online registration form filled in as soon as possible! From their website:
For students in grades 4 and above, parents, and teachers of any grade level or subject: This is the 6th annual celebration and special day honoring the life and legacy of Charles Lacy Veach, who grew up in Honolulu with an interest in science, had a distinguished career in the United States Air Force, and went on to fly two Space Shuttle missions.
Astronaut Lacy Veach serves to remind us all that the dreams of today can be forged into exploration and discoveries of tomorrow. While in Hawai'i, a child once asked Astronaut Veach: "What does it take to become an astronaut?" Veach responded, "You've got to believe in your dreams and you've got to be hard-headed enough to never let go."

Calendar Alert - SOEST Open House is Coming Up
University of Hawai'i's School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology has recently announced the dates of the next Open House: October 19th and 20th, 2007. This event happens only once every two years so mark your calendars now. If you are a homeschool group leader, or any kind of educator, please get this information to your students and families and begin planning for any large groups you would like to bring. Here is the letter:
Dear Educator,
The School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) at the University of Hawaii at Manoa is pleased to announce that the 9th SOEST Open House will be held on Friday, October 19, 2007 (8:30am to 2:00pm) and Saturday, October 20, 2007 (11:00am to 3:00pm). On behalf of the Dean of SOEST and the Open House Planning Committee, we would like to invite you and your class to attend this year’s Open House.
SOEST is home to the academic departments of Oceanography, Geology and Geophysics, Meteorology, and Ocean and Resources Engineering, as well as several related research institutes. SOEST’s graduate programs in these sciences are highly ranked nationally and SOEST brings in close to $70 million dollars in research funding per year. The SOEST Open House presents a diverse array of entertaining and educational "hands-on" activities, which highlight the research conducted by our faculty, students, and staff. Your students will learn about volcanoes, tsunamis, El Nino, planetary exploration, hurricanes, coastal erosion, and marine ecosystems to mention just a few topics, through a variety of videos, posters, and interactive demonstrations. They will visit state-of-the-art laboratories and hear about cutting-edge research from the scientists who are making the new discoveries!
This year’s Open House theme will be "Ocean Depths to Outer Space!" Please look for program updates at our Open House website:
http://www.soest.hawaii.edu/openhouse/
For more information, please contact Tara Hicks Johnson at 808-956-3151; email: hickst@hawaii.edu. For planning purposes, please make your group reservation prior to Friday, September 23, 2007.
