A Heart For Home
Aug. 11, 2006 - To Tube or Not to Tube

That is the question. I know a lot of homeschool families do not even own tv's, but there are quite a few of us who do. Our family is very conservative about the amount of tv we allow our kids to watch, but I am starting to question even that. There just isn't much quality programming on anymore. Not sure if there truly ever was. There are several shows that we record for educational purposes, but honestly that stuff could be easily rented or suitably substituted with a rental from a company like ACT Advantage. Not to mention that having tv is costly anymore since the demise of the bunny-ears. We have satellite, which is comparable to cable in our area.

And, I don't know what happens in your house, but in ours the children do not behave well after watching even a small amount of tv. I have read all about the why's but most "experts" (even the AAP) agrees that a moderate amount is ok. I'm not so sure anymore. Even if the kids just watch a half-hour or an hour, that time is preceded by tedious negotiations and followed by pleas for more. And, if we are doing school work afterward, it's like turning a speeding bus around to get them on task after that.

I don't feel the need to eradicate all tv time from our house. We have had some wonderful family time (and hubby time) watching good movies together. But, I think if you go to the trouble to go to the movie rental store and select something to watch together, plan on it and then do it, it's much more intentional than passive, and therefore somehow, better. That tv time is not the mindless escape that happens when you can flip on the tube and watch whatever is on. OK, truthfully our kids are pretty restricted about what they watch, but you get the idea.

I am just curious how other homeschool families deal (or don't) with the dreaded box. I believe the days of satellite and tivo in our home are numbered.

we don't have cable, we still only use bunny ears. WE don't like the stuff that's on cable, and we just don't want to spend our money on something so frivolous. But even the stuff that's on network tv isn't that great anymore. We're pretty cautious about what we watch, too. They just introduced a bill last week in the house, for a channel-by-channel cable system. If that ever goes through, then we will probably get cable. It would be nice to have the educational channels and the food channels to watch. Right now we use the library a lot for educational videos.

I was just talking about this issue, again, with my hubby. We do not agree on the tv. I think there should be none, he says it is his down time and is good entertainment for the children that he can chill out with them together and do. I did get the satalite sent away but the cable is just as bad. They label some of the channels as "family" channels, and there is no way that I would watch those movies or programs let alone allow my children to watch the programs they list as "family". I do confess that if my hubby is watching I will sit with him sometimes and watch too, but as GenesisFamily Dad asked, does it edifiy Christ. And I would add, would we still watch a program if the Lord was visably sitting next to us sharing our popcorn?

Aug. 19, 2006 - We don't tube

We turned off the tube four years ago. Funny how the kids can still quote current cartoons and movies even though they don't watch them at home. We figure that TV can be a treat (with guidelines) when they go to Nanny's or Maw-maw's house. We don't have cable for cost reasons and for personal convictions. The kids are ok, they are not weird nor are they out of the loop with friends. We do rent movies and I do allow them to watch some programs when visiting family. I could not justify the little use we got out of cable so turning it off seems like the logical thing to do. Even when cable shows are made available to them, I find them getting tired of TV after just a couple of shows. We enjoy reading much more that watching. Also, we attend many plays during the year. This makes great entertainment and I think the kids enjoy it greatly.

we watch a little TV but not much. We don't have time to watch much. But I let the kids watch PBS and Disney and a little Nickelodean. I prefer the Food Network LOL.

I know what you're talking about... we're trying to decide on that same thing right now... we've actually been letting them record educational things and then watching them later so they can fast forward through commercials (there're so bad now a days!)... it also gives them something to look forward to instead of just getting.

Could you please pass the word about the "Labor in Love" 30-Day Encouragement Challenge (from Revive Our Hearts) that we're doing beginning Sept. 4th? It would be great to have as many women as possible doing this (and I'm sure the husbands wouldn't mind either!)

Thanks,
Amy

Sep. 26, 2006 - What a good question!

We were without any form of television for the first 5 years of our kids lives....by choice. Then we decided to get a DVD player and allow only approved/rented movies in. (free from our library) We had great fun with our family movie nights and mom and dad nights. Then we moved on to netflix and can watch a wider variety of shows. We still don't allow cable or channels into the home because of the just plain yucky content of the shows and commercials. Even if you try to avoid the bad stuff you still have to go past the other channels or the just-as-bad advertising. If I had the self-control though, I'd just plain get rid of the whole thing!!! I liked it much better when we didn't have anything. It sure provided for much more creativity in the kids. But...alas....I really look forward to movie time after the kids go to bed.
