A reply about Narration
>>>But when I read to the kids and then ask them to tell me what they have just heard they look at me like I am an alien.
Can you have them tell Dad or a grandparent or someone else? Sometimes they do a better job narrating for someone other than Mom who they know just read it to them and ought to be able to remember for herself what it was about...LOL! :-)
Also, try reading smaller portions before requiring the narration. I had to start one of my dd's off with just a paragraph at first and then work up to more.
Having them draw about what you read to them is another good way to get a "narration" from them.
Finally, if after they've given it a try and haven't been able to remember anything substantial, go ahead and tell them what it was about....give *your* narration of the passage. This gives them an example and helps jog their memory. If you start to give a narration, they will probably jump in and try to take over with the things they want to add to your narration. ;-)
HTH!
