Why teach Parts of Speech through Dictation?
Using dictation is an excellent way to teach the parts of speech because, in reality, a word isn't a "part of speech" until it is used in the context of a sentence. Here's an example. The word "right" is a different part of speech in each of the following sentences. It's "part of speech" is determined, in each sentence, by how it is used in the sentence. I've included its part of speech in parentheses after each sentence.
Use right words. (adjective)
Act right. (adverb)
Right the wrong. (verb)
You are in the right. (noun)
Sentences used for dictation provide a way to study the parts of speech as they *function* in the sentence.
