While I was out hanging my laundry, my neighbor came out to pick up her yard a little. We were chatting when she noticed this huge bug sitting on her fence post.
Anyone have any clue what bug this is?

It's a cicada! Aren't they neat?! We had a bunch of them this year, too. (And you can hear them 'humming' in the trees when the weather gets really hot.)
Enjoy your 'nature study.' ;-)

a Cicada...AKA a locust. We have them all over here. They shed their skins, and you may find them on trees, porch railings, fences, etc. The skins look much smaller than the actual bug, and are brown in color, with the little "Claws" still holding it to whereever the locust was when he decided to shed. They make a loud buzzzzzing sound that I used to fall asleep listening to as a child.

If you haven't ever noticed cicadas you don't live in my part of the country, the southern US. Cicadas (not a locust, which is a grasshopper) have an interesting life cycle, living underground as a nymph for many years (up to 17) before coming to the surface to mate, lay eggs and die. Millions (literally) will become adults during an "exodus" and the trees will be rattling all day as they use their mating calls to locate "friends". As a child, I collected grocery bags of the exoskeletons, and they are still fascinating even though I am way past childhood.

A cicada! I used to call these June bugs. We would find their exoskeletons, empty, hanging on the pine trees in my NC yard. We'd attach them to our clothes, faces, etc. Very fun!

How can you actually teach children if you do not know that?
