New England Aquarium

Posted in Ponderings

Our trip to the aquarium was an interesting one. I took the kids into Boston earlier and told the 4-H leader we would meet her and the rest of the group in the aquarium at 3:30.

We live right near the train station so we drove down and paid 3.00 to park in the lot next to the train and 2.50 for tokens to get on. (they don't use tokens anymore, they have these stupid plastic/paper cards to use alled Charlie cards. Waste of money if you ask me). So we paid 5.50 to get into Boston for the day instead of paying 20.00+ for parking in Boston. Not that I would drive in Boston, I am afraid too with all the construction going on. (stupid Big Dig)

We walked down to Quincy Market and Fanuel Hall to do a little window shopping and try to find some postcards for the postcard group we belong to. No such l;ock in Quincy Market and time was running out so we didn't go into Fanuel Hall. I know during the summer there are tons of postcards all over the place, so I'll come back when the weather is warm to look again. The Aquarium is right across the street from the markets and took us maybe 5 minutes to get there, if I didn't want to stop in Christopher Columbus Park (no clue why it is called that honestly. I really need to learn more about the history around some parts of Boston. I know most, just not all). We looked at the boats in the water and Matt asked why the water was black. I didn't really feel like telling him the water was nasty dirty and polluted so I just told him it was because it was deep water, which was not intirely a lie.

From there we headed over to the aquarium and watched the harbor seals play in the big outdoor tank in front. It wasn't too cold out so I didn't mind waiting outside. One of the seals was playing with Matt, he racing with the seal. Matt would run while the seal would swim next to him. Chantelle was facinated with the way some ofthe seals were sleeping, upside down under water.

Once the group got there we went in and started looking around. The huge penguin exhibit is the first thing you see when you enter. Matt could spend all day just checking them out. The little blue penguins were making a huge racket. Chantelle started to freak out when she saw 2 penguins, umm, getting to know each other a little bit more. She knows it's natural, but it just freaked her out. Matt wanted to do his own thing and not what the group was doing. He isn't a member of the group, just Chantelle, but I still wanted to stay all together. The turtle trek keeps him pretty happy. You go around and learn all you can about the turtles and then get a stamp and at the end ofthe trek your get turtle stickers and they were supose to get a wristband to see what turtle you are, but the kids never got that.

The aquarium closed at 5pm so we didn't get to see Matt's jellyfish exhibit, I can always go back later on and see it again. We saw it during the summer and he loved it. Gotta love a membership so you can get in for free. And this way Matt can see what he wants to see when he wants to.
