Home Sweet Homeschool
Nov. 13, 2006

Today we will visit the library in search of some good books/movies about pilgrims, native americans, and Thanksgiving in general. We'll do a short unit on that this week, and maybe I'll let Matt off the hook with everything else. It would make my week so much easier, too! Maybe I'll be able to find him some Thanksgiving related worksheets or science activities online or something :o)

Next week is our Fall Break! YAY! Even though I technically feel like we've been on a break for two weeks now! Matt's been plodding along as usual (except for the Veteran's Day/ Birthday two day holiday last week, of course), but Elizabeth hasn't had 'school' in two weeks or so...maybe 3? I can't remember at this point...but she IS only 4, right? She has learned so much. Last night, out of the blue, I said, "Hey, Elizabeth, how do you think you would spell 'bat?'" Guess what she said?! "Um...B...A...T?" Wow. So I don't feel too awful bad...

Gotta go now, so maybe I'll blog more later. GOT TO get a digicam, I tell you! There's one on sale somewhere right now...saw it in an ad...for like 78$? A Kodak EasyShare...may check on that today..

Nov. 10, 2006

Wow. Has it really been a week since I last blogged?? How depressing. I have NO resolve...NO willpower!!

Anyhow, in my defense, it HAS been a busy week...We did Civil War Days Saturday and Sunday...Matt's 13th Birthday party Monday...Voted Tuesday and then celebrated Matt's actual birthday...SO no school Monday or Tuesday for us...Yippee! Nice break! Then I had to spend Tuesday getting ready for the rest of the week's lessons, of course. So Matt had school (did most of it on his own) Wed, Thurs, and Fri, but Elizabeth has had no 'school' all week.

We went to the park yesterday morning and walked a mile...visited with the squirrels, dogs, and ducks...and we made/ate dinner together last night (burgers and tots). Then we had to make 7 Christmas ornaments each because we're supposed to be doing one ornament each night and had been so busy that we haven't done one in a week or so! That was fun, but the entire mess is still on the kitchen table. I'll never get all that glitter cleaned up! I don't think Elizabeth made 7 ornaments, but she had a blast writing letters and 'messages' on aluminum foil with glitter glue and a paintbrush!! At any rate, we spent like 3 hours (amazingly!) together as a complete family and it was so much fun!

Matt is almost done with school today (he would be done if I'd get off the computer), and Elizabeth is lying on the couch behind me staring up at the window. She hasn't eaten anything today and she threw up in the van this morning. She says nothing hurts, so it may just be the 1/2 pkg of Colby cheese she ate last night for dinner!! :o(  I don't know, but I'll be taking a trash can in the van when we go to pick Sissy up from school in a little while...that's for sure! Luckily it only got on her shirt and blankie, so both of those are in the washer (time for them to go into the dryer now, I'm sure)...Anyhow...no school for her today, either, unless she asks.

Next week will be week 11 for us...the following week we'll take off...then the last week of November will be week 12...just in time for a looooong Christmas break! I love it!!

I saw that my name is on the list of subs to be approved at the county board meeting this Tuesday night, so I should be teaching shortly after that! I'm SO excited. Teaching! Me! Woot woot! :o)

Tuesday is also the day Jessica has to register for classes next Spring and she's planning on taking mainly night classes so that her 'job' will be babysitting the kids. Works for both of us!! She'll get money she doesn't have, and I'll know everything that happened with my kids all day! :o)

Tuesday is ALSO the night we go to Marshall for an informative meeting about People to People...Matt received an invitation to go to Europe next summer. Don't know any details yet, so it's MUCH too early to speculate, but we'll find out more Tuesday...

We FINALLY drove by the Pumpkin House yesterday just before Jessica's hair appointment (her hair looks SO cute!). We were SO amazed by the Pumpkin House. I mean, you see pics of it in the paper and on tv, but it's just sooooooo much cooler in person!! I can't wait to see it lit up next year!!

Ok, so I'm trying to begin dieting, eating healthier, whatever you choose to call it, but it's not going so well. I just can't get busy doing it! I will do great for most of the day then I'll just give in and eat like 8 snack candy bars or something ridiculous. Last night I put so much food on my plate that there was NO WAY I would ever eat it all...What is WRONG with me??? I have a good 100 pounds to lose...I have been successful with weight loss to some degree in the past, but I just can't get the desire to do this!! I sure hope I get past this soon...I need to do this for my own health and for my family...not to mention for the 100 reasons my friend, Christina, came up with (she's not mean-- just working on weight loss herself) LOL

Maybe once I start teaching I won't have time to eat like this anymore...?? On that note, I'll end this blog in the same way I started it...I have no resolve! No will power!! Hope my next blog is more positive...

Nov. 3, 2006

Ok, so I just blogged a paragraph or two and lost it somewhere in cyber space when I tried to add a smiley. They really need to get that fixed--it's soooo annoying!

Anyhow, as I said before (but of course you didn't hear it because, as I mentioned before, it got lost)...I am just trying to think of something [anything!] that we did today that could be considered even remotely school-related...Matthew did two Math lessons--dividing/multiplying decimals. I'm not even sure what else he did. I think he actually finished most of his work for today yesterday evening. He said the math was tooooo easy. We'll see about that when I grade it :o)

I haven't done 'real' school with Elizabeth all week. Today wasn't any different. Let's see...we got up early and cleaned the house...took Daddy to work and went out to breakfast (McD's in the car on BK's parking lot--is that legal?)...took Jessica to school...came home...Mommy played on the computer while Matt did Math and Elizabeth played Barbies and Polly Pockets (and they both tormented each other half to death--not Barbie and Polly...Matt and Elizabeth)...then we met Daddy for lunch (BK in the car)...by this time it was time to pick Jessica up again...we came home and took down the Halloween decorations (ripped the sun-faded paper jack-o-lanterns with fan-folded dangly arms and legs from the windows, peeled off the dusty Frankenstein window decals, pulled the pipe cleaner spiders from the real spider webs they were now nestled in, threw away the once soft-now hard lady bug carcass infested "Happy Halloween" door mat as well as the hand-made rotted crabapple & leaf styrofoam plate wreath, and tossed the shriveled-up-like-old-people-with-no-teeth jack and jill-O'lanterns (tealights, mildew and all) in the trash can with a thud)...I didn't realize Elizabeth knew how to work both kinds of shades until she brought me all the decals from Jessica's window! Then I rearranged the gourds and newer not-yet-carved pumpkins on the porch. I probably should've swept or something, but from the road it looks neat.

Elizabeth and I worked together to clean up her horrendous mess of a room at some point and Matt cleaned his as well. I talked to my sister and brother on the phone and played on the computer some more. Imagine that. This evening, after picking Jesse up from work, we went to the church to help set up for tomorrow's rummage sale and to get ready for Civil War Days! I'm soooo excited! Plus I got to look through the rummage stuff early and bought a bunch of clothes for Elizabeth and Jessica for a quarter each! :o) Elizabeth played with Mary & Ginnie while Matt hung out with Madi, Corey, Ricky, & Lexi.

So, is there anything at all schoolish in there? I think not. Besides the Math. The worst part is that I don't even feel an ounce of guilt about it. So we didn't sing the days of the week again or practice our phone number...big deal. We spent time together and with our friends...and on the computer--ok I feel a little guilty about all the time I've spent on here today. Oh, well...tomorrow's another day, right?

But all is well that ends well. Jesse is in bed (no doubt waiting for me). I am on the computer, but getting off VERY soon to hit the sack as well. Jessica is asleep in her room and has been for a couple hours (Jennifer spent the night so she AND Elizabeth are in Jessica's bed, too). Matthew and Ricky (who also spent the night) are in his room making way too much noise for this time of night--they've been playing Don't Break the Ice (which I bought for a quarter at the sale--even though it has all its pieces and 3 extra pieces of ice to spare!) but I think they're playing a video game now. They're laughing a LOT, though, so I'll have to squelch that soon...Anyways, we ate out too many times today (Rocky Tops' cheese sticks for dinner), sang way too loud in the van on the way home tonight, and OMGosh I just remembered that we forgot to do our Christmas ornaments!! Oh well...like I always say...what DO I always say? I can't remember, but I'm sure it involves something to do with a happy ending...and that's how this day ended so who can complain?

My First Blog

Ok, so my friend Crystal has been bugging me to start doing a blog, so here's my first one. Although it won't be fancy shmancy like hers because I still need to get a new digicam (plus she's just WAY talented!), I hope I can at least remember to keep it up!

This week we haven't been doing anything too hard core. Matt just started adding/subtracting/multiplying/dividing fractions and is learning about the digestive system. Woot woot. He did write a really cool Halloween story that he'll be revising/editing tomorrow, though. It's about a mad scientist that creates a Shark Monster Thing. Yes, that's the official title of the monster. LOL  He's been doing outlines, too, and he's pretty daggone good at it!

I've slacked off on schooling Elizabeth this week to just sort of review what she's learned so far (which is amazing to me!) and to evaluate what she knows/needs to learn. She is gradually learning the sounds the letters make and knows about 20 sight words already plus the days of the week and time to the hour.

This afternoon we went to Ritter Park and fed nuts to the squirrels and the mallards (did NOT know ducks eat peanuts!). It was a beautifully sunny day, but the wind was sooooo cold! It was blowing leaves in a big swirl all around us and Elizabeth was running around trying to catch one. It was such a good day!! And Daddy was off work so he got to go with us. We walked, ran, played in the leaves, fed the animals, played in the swing and on the dinosaur rocks, and gathered red, gold, and brown leaves to make Thanksgiving placemats this week. Matt got a kick out of the ducks pecking at each other's 'buttocks' (a word I don't like because it's so disgusting). When I asked him not to use that word, he said, "Would you rather I use the technical term-- anus?" Ugh. Thank you Complete Book of Science page 68...

Tonight we'll be making two Christmas ornaments because we got home from church too late last night to make one then. We are going to make one ornament each every night this month so that we'll have enough by Thanksgiving weekend to decorate our tree :o) We did that a couple other years and it was so cool!

Well, that's about it for my first blog. I'll try and add more tomorrow. Right now I gotta' go get the ornament stuff ready because Jessica has to start a research paper (yes, I said 'start') that's due tomorrow...LOL
