School Day 2009

Well this year we are doing things a little different. That’s one of the fun things about homeschool blogging you can see how things change.

We are still doing our Wisdom Booklets of course. Christ has clearly lead us to do this so that will always be the same but the way we use this tool may defer each year .Its very flexible.

One thing I am doing is using the Content Overview to prepare for the next Wisdom Booklet. It does a good job of listing things that we will be covering & extra items I can purchase to further the learning. It has a note section where I can add books in my library along with the page numbers s when I d the Wisdom Bk again it is all there for me. Sometimes you forget what you have in your library. This also would be a great help for your evaluator to show material covered in the sch; year at a glance.

Our Day:

We spend each day doing the 3Rs Reading , writing,& Arithmetic.

Reading is a book that complements our Wisdom book studies. With the older kids I will be highlighting vocabulary words for them & geography from that book to mark on a map.I have not done this yet but I will be trying it this next book cming up in a few weeks.

Writing: also goes with the WB either the Wisdom Bk Language Art writing assignment or research from the WB or resource on something we are studying in the WB. Most of the time we simply use the WB but I also like to encourage research so we do both. One of the benefits of homeschooling is raising learners that can learn on their own.

How we d ur writing assignments

Monday: take notes

Tuesday: write draft

Wednesday: do our check list challenge which is adding adverbs, adjectives, etc. This is a god way to cover language arts in their writing.

Thursday: We d any final changes & type it in the computer along with adding fancy borders, pictures, etc.

Spelling: This year we use Excellance in Spelling which is an indepenant spelling program. Its nice for me because this was a week area in my homeschooling & it showed. They now do all this on their own

Math: The younger children we do a Professor  B Math lesson using the CD version which is so much easier than the books for me. Then I get free worksheets on line to practice the lesson learned fr the rest of the week. The older kids are going Teaching Textbooks which has been a very big blessing with the higher Math years coming up!

Language Arts: Our main focus this year was doing the Bridge to Latin Road but we did do some WB LA this year too when not doing homeschool co-ops and we have a five day at home week verses a four day week with a co-op.

Wisdom Booklets: Each day we either read from the WB or d a project. Sometimes we do both just depending. We also do either a notebook page or mini-booklets that correspond with what we are learning. I sometimes purchase these or make my own depending on $ or time.

My kids get overloaded with all the lapbook stuff so I usually make them up on the weekend & the kids decorate plus write in them.I want them t do more writing than cutting, folding etc.

This year we are back to doing co-ops. One is on Friday which is a nice way to end the week. We take mostly take Art & Science classes that focus on  experimenting etc. All the busy messy stuff we don’t find time to do at home. I am also in a history co-p that is a Tapestry of Grace co-op.We do the fun crafty things that go along with history ,gym class, & field trips that go with the time period covered. There are some talented homeschooling moms out there & I am blessed to gather together with them!

Home School in the woods-Colonial Life

I am still doing the Wisdom Booklets.I just love them & since the Lord has lead me to use them they are the backbone of my homeschool program which I love because it feeds me plus feeds His sheep.

I am usng the Homeschool n the Woods -Colonial life right now as a supplement and will be moving on to the Revolutionary war next which all goes with our wisdom booklets well.I have found a am a note booker so I have also made the lapbook in the pack & made them notebooking pages. We are meeting with some other families every other week to do the lessons, projects, and notebook pages which works out great for me so it will not overtake my Wisdom Booklets. The other families do TOG (Tapestry of Grace) & it is going wth their lesson plans. The Wisdom Booklets covers such a variety of history it will easily complement them since we will cover the Colonial period sometime in the year. This is a really nice unit study that includes informaton to teach, notebooking pages, lapbook, and hands on projects. We are having a good time with it .

The notebook we are making s really turning out nice & will be nice to keep adding to as we cover the colonial time period in the future.I guess that is why I love notebooks. You can keep adding to them & reviewing them as the years go by.

Organizing childrens school books

Well its been a few months since I have been able to post to my blog. Now that the school year is coming to the end I can take the time to post .

I am hoping I can figure out to add pictures to make sense of my exsplanations.I purchased a magazine rack for each child that will be theirs until they graduate from homeschool. Each one has their name on it & it is to place their workbooks, notebooks,Wisdom Booklets, books, Wisdom Booklet LA, etc. in it.This way they have a place to keep it no more excuses they lost it because they are reponsible to put it back.(works most of the time LOL they are homeschool children what would life be like if they were perfect LOL) Another advantage is they can go & work anywhere they want on their own-kitchen tables, floor,& sometimes maybe outside, etc.

Next I have a special book shelf that is not apart of the library for them to place their magazine racks on.I also have tool like dictionary,Strong's Concordance etc. along with books we may be using with our Wisdom booklets.I think this coming school year when I do the planning I will go through my personal library & pick the books etc.I will be using then place them on the shelf so I do not hi can check to see if I missed any books etc. for my end of the year portfolio.

Pa Homeschool Law

Here is an excellant  website that will help you understand the Pa homeschool law .I also use these forms for my affidavit & other legal information. There are planning forms etc.I praise God for the people who put all this information at one site for me to use year after year!!!

Pa Law standardized achievement tests

The following will help clarify the PA home education testing
requirements.

The PA Home Education law requires that "in grades three, five, and
eight
results of nationally normed standardized achievement tests in
reading/language arts and mathematics or the results of Statewide tests
administered in these grade levels" be included in the child's
portfolio. If
you are you planning on having your child tested this year in
compliance
with the Pennsylvania Home Education Law, here is some useful
information:

~ The only restriction on who may give the test to the student in
grades 3,
5, and 8 is that it cannot be the parent. Any other family member may
administer the test to the child - many families use an older sibling
or
grandma.

~ The parent determines the grade of the child. If you say that your
child
is in 2nd grade even though his chronological age would put him in 3rd
grade, then you do not need to have him tested.

~ The child does not need to take the same grade test as he is
currently in.
For example, if you are concerned that your "3rd grader" is not reading
proficiently yet, you may have him take a 1st or 2nd grade test.

~ The Pennsylvania Department of Education has provided a list of 10
tests
to choose from. They vary in scope and time length. See list below.

~ Home educated children do NOT have to take the PSSA tests. (I
strongly
recommend that they do NOT. The PSSA test is an assessment of the
public
education system and the child would have to go into the school to take
it.)

~ Only scores in reading/language art and math testing are required to
be
turned into the school districts. Any other subject areas are optional
and
those scores should be personal.

~ There are no "acceptable" test scores. The law only requires that the
tests be taken. The school districts may not refuse your right to home
school based solely upon the test results. However, weakness in all
items
that the superintendent sees to determine "appropriate education" at
the end
of the year may be problematic.

~ Anyone may order an achievement test from the test companies listed
below.
Not all suppliers have the same requirements for test administers.

~ The testing provided by homeschool service providers is not superior
to
the tests that a parent may order on their own, nor is participation in
large group testing required by the Home Education Law in Pennsylvania.

~ Testing does not have to be done at a 'testing site' or even with a
group.
Studies have in fact shown that students do better being tested in
familiar
surroundings, and for homeschoolers, that would be home.

~ Testing can be less expensive when tests are ordered through the mail
from
a test supplier when compared with the costs of testing provided by a
homeschooling achievement testing business.

From the PA Home Education Law regarding testing:

(1)A portfolio of records and materials. The portfolio shall consist of
a
log, made contemporaneously with the instruction, which designates by
title
the reading materials used, samples of any writings, worksheets,
workbooks
or creative materials used or developed by the student and in grades
three,
five, and eight results of nationally normed standardized achievement
tests
in reading/language arts and mathematics or the results of Statewide
tests
administered in these grade levels. The department shall establish a
list,
with a minimum of five tests, of nationally normed standardized tests
from
which the supervisor of the home education program shall select a test
to be
administered if the supervisor does not choose the Statewide tests. At
the
discretion of the supervisor, the portfolio may included the results of
nationally normed standardized achievement tests for other subject
areas or
grade levels. The supervisor shall ensure that the nationally normed
standardized tests or the Statewide tests shall not be administered by
the
child's parent or guardian.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me. I have
personally
used Seton Home Study and Family Learning Organization (no
relationship). I have also received approval from my school district for tests not
on the PDE
"approved" list.

Thank you Maryalice Newborn for this information!

Planning WB by themes instead of day by day using index cards

You can plan bythemes verses day to day!

Purchase:index holder -the largest one available
index card dividers -at least 8 or how many WB you plan on doing
                     index cards to fit

Instead of planning for each day you can plan by theme! So if you plan
on doing 8 WB for example you would place 8 dividers with the WB # you are planning &  on each individual index card the resource/subject .Ex.History Resource-Ancient Roman Colosseums

In the front of your index card holder box you could have your master of your WB figured out by days or you can simply go through your WB resource by resource using the theme planner as a organizer & planner of books for your WB.Skies the limit !

So in your box you would have an index card for each:
WB 30 plastic divider
Theme Song index card
Insights Through Investigation index card
Power Through Precision index card
HistoryResource index etc.

You would move through your WB one theme, subject, resource at a time.

On the index card you could list on the theme-ex Science Resource-Various Habitat Regions of Animals.then you would list all the books in your library that teach this. You then can use this card to purchase or get some good living books from the library or a used curr.forum or book sale.Don't forget books to read as read alouds & readers also on your list !

The Benefit: You can go to the library with your index cards, used curr.fairs, or my
favorite used curr. forums.I get so many living books cheap this way.I
just purchased one for $4 & that included the shipping!I order a few books
each month cheap for the next WB.If none of the above works you go go
through your own library ,BJU books etc.& write on the card what you have
with the page etc.I always find books I forgot I own doing this before I
purchase more! You also are more flexable planning by theme verses day to day & save planning time.Planning is a personality thing you have to find what works for you.You can either do the day to day like a have posted also on this blog or by theme like I have listed here.I am learning that the theme planning & logging my days is working best for me.

Now that I spent the time planning the topics ,it will help me stay focused on my childrens learning in the school year.I now can plan  the topics in our WB we will be covering during the year so when I come across that topic I can add it to my card.Besides books you can list field trips you would like etc.Since I spent the time planning the theme or topics I know this school year we will be covering weather, Ancient Rome etc. so it is very helpful to me as I plan.I plan my main year then the month before I can add or look for anything I need the next month.

The fun thing about the index cards is if you change your mind you can easily throw them away & replace them without having to redo your enitre planner!     I index cards!!!!

I pray this is a blessing to you !!!!!.

Notebooking with Copywork

Notebooking with Copywork

With all age children copywork is a natural easy way to teach LA.This is why the WBLA curriculim uses this method of teaching in its lesson plans. Its very simple but very powerful.

You begin with copying one letter at a time & as they learn blends etc. teach them to work up to whole words & syllables for longer words.Teaching them to copy by whole words or syllables at a time verses one letter at a time helps their spelling.

The younger children when they are done sit with them & orally go over very simple English lessons in a loving way show them for example if they forgot to start with a capital letter at the beginning of the sentence etc. You will begin to build a foundation for notebooking with the WB & work in the WBLA but yet at a level of work they can handle.

If your doing  seperate/added copywork  from the WBLA lessons with an older child.Siince they are using the WBLA you don’t need to discuss grammar etc. with them since they are learning it in their studies. Just assign them the copywork assignment. They will learn sooo much & have a notebook they will be proud of !!!!!!

Doing copy work They learn to:

1.      spelling

2.      pay attention to detail

3.      reading comprehension especially when they draw a picture along with their copywork, how a sentence is put together using punctuation

4.      punctuation

5.      grammar

6.      beginning habits of writing

7.      builds character when choosing, verses quotes, & proverbs that you want to engraft in them

You can simply choose one of the following-(note-look for topic sentences or excellent examples of literature )

  1. verse-from WB, WBLA, CCC lesson or a verse that reflects the character of the WB.ex.WB11 Endurance 2 Timothy 2:3
  2. quote from a person in your read aloud or WB studying ex.John Bunyan ““Pray often; for prayer is a shield to the soul, a sacrifice to God, and a scourge for Satan”
  3. highlight  in the WB or write on the board a sentence , paragraph, pr paragraphs from the WB,a resource book, (as the IEW writing video states the WB was very well written using adverbs etc.It is full with copywork gems- waiting to be copyied)

Some places you can find your sentences for the notebook

  1. Bible
  2. the read aloud your working in
  3. a book they are reading
  4. Wisdom Booklet
  5. WBLA
  6. CCC
  7. Hymn books
  8. Resource-ex. Encyclopedias
  9. poetry books
  10. magazine
  11. newspaper
  12. church bulliten
  13. anything else you can think of

Notebooking pages you can put copywork on:

  1. draw a picture
  2. paste a picture
  3. use fancy copywork paper
  4. make a homemade notebooking page  etc.
  5. artwork

This not only begins learning &  notebooking etc but if you have an older child in 3rd grade etc. who is struggling with writing you can add more copywork assignments to help with their frustration. All ages should do copywork! That is why I am so grateful it is apart of the WBLA for all 3 levels !!!!  The older the more writing you require. Do not worry about the younger child copying words they cannot read.

Here is a general outline if copywork but adapt it to your child. You will be the judge if your child is ready to write. I personally don’t begin copywork until I begin my CCC in 2nd grade but for those of you who want to teach early you can begin at any age! My daughter loves copywork so she does more than I would ask her to do!!!!

  1. Prek a letter, blend etc.
  2. K-one simple word
  3. 1rst grade –one sentence
  4. 2nd grade –2 sentences
  5. 3rd. grade –1 paragraph
  6. etc….

Here are some themes .Use your own ideas or lessons.

  1. ABC book
  2. character NB –ex. everything about Endurance
  3. Bible NB-ex. all Proverbs, Noah, etc.
  4. (my favorite for older children) WB-all the resources in the WB you are studying
  5. Read Aloud.-for reading comprehension you can ask them about something to tell you something that happened in the chapter then choose a sentence from their response.- have them copy a sentence you placed on the board, from the book, or on an index card then have them draw a picture
  6. (My favorite for younger children )CCC   copying the phonics card phrases, the verses in the verse box, or spelling rule little rhymes
  7. Science-ex. Weather
  8. History ex. Rome
  9. Geography-ex. China
  10. missionaries
  11. current events
  12. etc. anything you can think of

My favorite is to use the CCC phonics card for the younger children becasue they can easily take it to the area they will do the copy work, its less prep time for mom, & it further builds on what they are learning.Using the CCC phonics card you can use:

  1.  phonics rhyme ex. (Ii for image) No graven image thou shalt make, the Lord is one-do not forsake!
  2. verse-scripture reference on the back of the phonics card
  3. spiritual application for older child learning on the back of the phonics card

If you want to include the younger children in the WB lessons this is an excellant way to include them at their working level !!

Don’t forget about the many free notebooking pages & fancy ones you can purchase online that are excellent for copywork!!!!

They also sell at Walmart a primary journal by Mead with primary lines on the bottom half of the page & the top half is blank so you could add your drawings ,paste pictures etc. for the younger age students. They are cheap This is what I love to use.We then can decorate the cover when we are done to cover up the plain black & white cover.

Notebooking with WB 11 Step by Step Example

Notebooking with WB 11 Step by Step Example

I am currently in WB11 so I am going to walk step by step how I am doing this WB. Keep in mind that you can do each one different this is just an example. Each month your notebook could include different type pages! You can add more or less depending on how you planned it for the month. I will give a few examples since there are a million ways I could do each notebook, which makes notebooking fun, or if you’re a creature of habit do it the same each time!

I did purchase a pre-made weather lapbook from Hands of a Child on sale to add to my notebook.. However instead of making a lapbook I am placing the mini-books on my notebooking pages so I can keep on going with out spending time figuring out how to design the lapbook. If I also get behind it doesn’t matter I can just do a few pages I don’t have to complete all the mini-booklets. This is the freedom off notebooking verses lapbooks I can easily change plans without   it slowing my schedule or effecting my NB!

Supplies

q       I purchase the cheap 10 cent folders with side pockets & metal prongs for each Wisdom Booklet one for each child.I can at the end easily show fiends & family my notebook. Each month. At the end of the year I will have the children choose 2 of their favorite NB for the portfolio at the end of the year.

q       I purchase plastic protectors to place my notepages in as we add them to the notebook

q       I purchased a lapbook from Hands of a Child extreme weather it not only has pre-made minibooks but information for oral lessons

1.      I try to teach in my notebooks alternating  one month science one month history as our focus. next month I will have more history pages I purchased a Gladiator lapbook for WB 12)

2.      I also try to keep a theme example I choose ships for my notebooking theme because of the WB theme song so my notebooking pages are ships in a storm because of the extreme weather focus. You can simply make a notebooking page or find free ones. It just makes the page fancy think of it a fancy stationary. You can also glue pictures from mag., the internet & the WB or place stickers on plain old notebooking pages.

Step by Step doing Wisdom Booklet 11

3.      Day 1 Wisdom Quiz( I have my children write in their WB at the end of the WB these pages go in their NB when we finish review & take them apart)

4.      Day2-Meditation WS

5.      Day3-Character Qualities WS

6.      Day4 Theme song WS (so that’s already 4 notebooking pages in your notebook) if you want to add another day you can do a notebbok page on the writer or composer

7.      Day5-Insights through Investigation-I am focusing on 1rst Aid & Biblical counseling.(I will spend a few days to cover the information)

q       I will make a cover page that says 1rst Aid & a verse on it.

q       On the other side inside my plastic protector I will make a notebooking page with 3 blocks & 3 paragraph lines next to it. I will break the information down to 3 parts & have the children write what they learn. We highlight the key word in our WB then they write it in their own words. WE do this for all our NB pages

1.      Laceration Definition(in the box I have a picture of a cut)

2.      Symptoms

3.      Treatment draw in box proper position of shock)

Next page so when you open the notebook it is laid out the same but is listed as Biblical Counseling

1.      Cutting Words:

2.      Symptoms

3.      Treatment:

You can decorate these pages with pictures or at the end of the WB cut up the pictures to decorate. I also made homemade WS you can look at in the file section of the Wisdom Searchers yahoo group

        Day 8

q       Same thing again

1.      Puncture Wounds definition

2.      Symptoms

3.      Treatment

Next page

1.      Piercing Words

2.      Symptoms

3.      Treatment

Next NB page

1.      Poison definition

2.      Symptoms

3.      Treatment

Next NB page

1.      Poisonous Words

2.      Symptoms

3.      Treatment

Next NB page

1.      Burns

2.      Symptoms

3.      Treatment

Next NB page

1.      Burning Words

2.      Symptoms

3.      Treatment

Day 9

q       Power through Precision I just read it & do not do a notebook page since the NB pages will be done with the WBLA for the vocabulary words

q       I begin my extreme weather pages. So I will make a cover page with a verse or phrase that ties in my weather section of the notebook to the WB

q       The next NB page I will make a clouds notebooking page. I have a weather & clouds pocket field guide I use to teach along with the info. from the Hands of A Child lapbook. On this page you can paste a picture of the different cloud types then place the definition next to them

q       Next NB I write the title-Types of Couds in the Month of August.I glue the title & a calendar on a piece of cloud paper you can purchase cloud paper at Walmart to use in your WB .I then keep it in the sidepocket since I will be recording the clouds all month long on this NB page.We will use our handy dandy pocket guide not only to teach but to identify the clods all month.

Day 10

q       Read History resource & make a timeline. I use the project section at the end of the WB for my guide. so I will place on the title of the NB page John Bunyan’s World. I will make a timeline with 8 spaces on a line you can also find free timelines I leave the timeline blank I just make it. I will fill it in the next day

q       I will then make a notebook page on thunderstorms placing the title on the top then all the thunderstorm minibooks on that page from the HOC * read about thunderstorms

Day 11

q       I will then have the students place the timeline in order answers are in the teachers WB. Glue a picture, or a drawing  above or below the date & copy from the WB or write in their own words what they did ex.a picture of William Penn with the words stating William Penn Establishes Pa.I also use The King fisher History Encyclopedia to read about the different sections of history. It is in timeline order. They then learn what history was like during the time of John Bunyan & you now have a history time line in your NB

q       Science NB page today is hurricanes as title & the same add Mini-booklets to page. You can use scrapbooking supplies to make the pages & titles for something fancy

Day 12

q       Read Science Resource & then draw a palm tree-label parts & write next to label how each part is designed to with stand storms. You can title your NB page Palm tree Teaches Believers to Withstand Persecution

Day 13

q       Next WB page do project at he end of the resource. Write a parallel sentence that would express the analogy of a palm tree & a believer. You could study analogies & remained children of John Bunyan. For their NB page you can place the title on the top & glue the title & writing assignment on pretty palm tree paper.

q       Science Monsoons NB page today

Day 14

q       Read Authority Through Accuracy

q       Science-do a tornadoes NB page

Day 15

q       Read Law Resource

q       NB definitions of slander, libel etc. on a fancy NB page

q       Science NB Blizzards

Day 16

q       Read Medicine Resource sections 1-2

q       NB page titles protective systems of the body –copy from WB the systems then cut up pictures & glue or draw pictures( at the end of the WB when you cut it up you can add the pictures to the NB)

Day 17

q       read Med.R sections3-4

q       make NB pages on White Blood cells have then draw the pictures & labels from the WB along with definitions on the page like you did for the Palm tree

Day 18

q       Finish reading Med.Res.

q       do a notebook page on a book report my children completed like Traitor in the Tower by Trailblazers about John Bunyan( when we placet our NB in order we place it by the John Bunyab timeline)

Day 19

q       Life Classroom Ws (place in NB)

Day 20

q       We put our notebook in order since we just kept adding to it.

q       We review everything we learned all month

q       Cut up our WB & add pictures to the NB-you can glue the cover write on the front of the NB or as design one.

q       We then Mastery Quiz & that’s the last thing in my NB

You can also add the WBLA pages to the NB. You can do those copy work & writing assignments on fancy NB pages to dress up your NB.I made a John Bunyan NB for the Level A copywork for the WBLA 11.When I place it in order I will place that with the timeline  & book report. So you see how your NB pages just build of each other! Week 2 copywork will be about the Palm tree so I place that with the Palm tree NB pages. Etc.

I would recommend purchasing some basic plain NB pages you just fill in until you get the hang of it. The general ones are organized by information like a mini booklet etc. They are cheap at www.homeschoolestore.com They also sell the Hands of A Child premade lapbooks. Then as you get the hang of it you can make your own or purchase themed ones like Roman NB pages for WB12.

You can also add artwork, Sunday school papers etc.to the NB for that month.

You will be surprised how large & nice your NB will be at the end .Each WB NB  is different you can spend more or less time on a resource. You are the teacher you decide!

I will add pictures to my blog when my camera is fixed .In the meantime I hope this helps. You are welcomed to email me with any questions..

Nature Studies

Nature study is one of those aspects of the Charlotte Mason method that is often mentioned but rarely studied in-depth. Just what, exactly, did Charlotte mean by "nature study"? We've been combing her writings and compiling her comments, and a beautiful picture is unfolding! Over the next few weeks we will share that beautiful, encompassing picture with you.

If you had asked me, "Why do nature study?" when my children were young, I would have replied, "To get them outside and burn up some of that energy" (that we all wish we could tap into now at our age!). If you had asked the same question when they got a little older, I would have answered, "To increase their skills of observation . . . and the fresh air doesn't hurt either." Just last year my answer would have been, "To cultivate a love for God as creator."

While those answers are all true, the reasons to do nature study are so much more! Let's look at eight benefits that Charlotte wrote about.

1. Nature study lays the foundation for formal science studies (Vol. 3, p. 281). The child lays in a store, as it were, of images and ideas to access and use in making personal connections when he reads about them in a science book later.

2. Nature study makes science interesting. Charlotte lamented, "For the most part science as she is taught leaves us cold" (Vol. 6, p. 318). But a child who has the advantage of nature study, an "appreciative knowledge of things to begin with," can easily reach the "living science" level (Vol. 3, p. 77).

3. Nature study increases your child's capacity to understand the unknown. "By-and-by he will have to conceive of things he has never seen: how can he do it except by comparison with things he has seen and knows?" (Vol. 1, p. 66).

4. Nature study cultivates a love of investigation. And Charlotte
encouraged mothers to "infuse into" our children, "or rather, to cherish in them, the love of investigation" (Vol. 1, p. 71).

5. Nature study gives your child a sense of ownership and stewardship of the Earth. "Here is a duty that lies upon us all; for we all enter on the inheritance of the heavens and the earth, the flowers of the field and the birds of the air. These are things to which we have right, no one can take them from us; but, until we get as much as a nodding and naming
acquaintance with the things of Nature, they are a cause rather of irritation and depression than of joy" (Vol. 4, Book 2, p. 97).

6. Nature study prepares your child's heart to worship God. "From the flower in the crannied wall to the glorious firmament on high, all the things of Nature proclaim without ceasing, 'Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty' " (Vol. 4, Book 2, p. 100).

7. Nature study enriches your child's life. "A love of Nature, implanted so early that it will seem to them hereafter to have been born in them, will enrich their lives with pure interests, absorbing pursuits, health, and good humour" (Vol. 1, p. 71).

8. Nature study increases your child's intellect and makes him a more interesting person. "Consider, too, what an unequalled mental training the child-naturalist is getting for any study or calling under the sun -- the powers of attention, of discrimination, of patient pursuit, growing with his growth, what will they not fit him for?" (Vol. 1, p. 61).

Eight great reasons to make time for nature study! (It's so easy to skip it, isn't it?) Next week we'll start in on the basics of when and how.

I wanted to add as I study the great saints of old like Jonathan Edwards, William Penn, etc. I noticed they spent much time studying nature. The quiet time with the Lord in His creation made a huge impact on their lives. The Lord taught them much about science. The key is the Lord taught them as they observed nature. Some of the greatest minds did much nature study. We have lost so much of this in our modern age.

Living Books Over Boring Textbooks!!

Purchasing interesting books with allot of pictures & small field guides are  excellent living science books. They have pictures & information that will draw your children in to learning. We are getting ready to learn about weather so I simply placed the National Audubon Society field guide to Storms & clouds out in the living room where they see it. On the couch etc. along with a Dover extreme weather coloring book & my children began looking at them without me saying this is what we are studying. So that was to wet their appetite for learning! I call it the bait & hook learning.

Today we will begin the study & all the questions he was asking me will be answered. We will spend the month looking studying clouds & looking for signs of storms. We can go outside each day to look at the clouds then record our findings in our notebook on a calendar to place in our notebook. We of course will take our handy dandy pocket guide to identify the clouds. Hearing the cloud vocabulary over & over all month will increase their learning. It sure beats the old fashion cloud worksheet lesson. The pocket guide has all the information not just the pictures so it is a living learning educational book.

It is important for me as a homeschooling mom to provide my children good Living books that will draw my children into them. We have some excellent books & pocket field guides that just make learning come to life. I am not a fan of textbooks like BJU until they are a senior when they need to prepare for the college type textbooks. All the years before we should offer good books that make learning come to life. I purchase them used if possible since I will use them over & over with my large family but if budget is tight you can easily go to the library.

Since we are studying extreme weather in WB11 this is a wonderful way to teach weather & how God designed the Palm tree to withstand hurricanes like we, as Christians are to be able to withstand those that persecute us by His grace. I love my Wisdom Booklets!

I can't wait to answer & discuss all the questions that were ignited in my son!

Notebooking Pages Writing Assignments

Notebooking Pages Writing Assignments

When I have my children write what they have learned for their notebook I just let them enjoy writing & learn to write their thoughts. Dictation compliments notebooking well. They would quickly get tired of writing if I did a formal writing assignment with every notebookpage. They can edit it or change it if they want but I keep my red marking pen away from their notebook pages. You can orally discuss it with them but to avoid frustration I would let mistakes slide when it comes to marking it or making them do it again..

We will still do one formal writing assignment a week & that is our WBLA assignment since it already organized for me to teach with ease. The day we do our WBLA writing assignment I do not do any notebooking pages.

At the end of the year when we are choosing our notebook pages to put in the portfolio we may then edit & revise the pages they choose for both review & to make it presentable on the portfolio. If art work or something was on the page you wanted to save you can either make a second page to show a finished & ruff draft or simply cut it & place it over the ruff draft. You can also do the writing assignments on index cards then just remove & replace them off of the notebooking page.

I hope this makes sense!

Read Alouds 4 WBs

Read Aloud Books that Correspond with the

                       Wisdom Booklets

Children can learn so much from read alouds. They learn vocabulary, history, creativity, exposed to different writing styles etc.It is important  to choose what Charlotte Mason calls living books. These are well written books that increase learning while at the same time they are a joy to listen to. Read alouds should be apart of every homeschool home no matter what age of the students. There is nothing like studying history by reading a good historical fiction. You can picture the time period & it feels like you are there. This is a powerful tool & an excellent way to add to the WB.

Not only do read alouds educate our children but it brings a family close together in this fast high tech.world.We enjoy reading books together. We enjoy talking about the books. My children never want the story to end. They get so upset when we end the story they don’t want a new one because they don’t think there could be a book that compares. but then they quickly fall in love with next story. This is one thing I can see we do that really strengthens the family. It is a very important part of our homeschool day.

When choosing read alouds I look for books that magnify the WB I am studying, Example Wisdom Booklet 12 the study of Christian Persecution in Rome I may read Martyr of the Catacombs a tale of Ancient Rome.. As I read books I will continually add to this post new book reviews. My favorite book is a book that is not only a good quality because of literature & enjoyment but if it glorifies God orif it encourages Godly Character, I give it a thumbs up!

I try to read aloud 1-2 books per WB depending on the length which I try to cover in a month. I also try to include science books when possible if I can find one to use with the WB..I then list these books as read alouds at the end of the year. Read alouds are also considered part of teaching time since they are so educational if you log hourly you can log that as time teaching.

As I read books I will continually add to this post new book reviews.

Family Devotions

                                               Family Devotions:

For our family devotions we read the Bible in a year (or as close to it as possible LOL! )..We follow a schedule like listed below. Each night we sing hymns .Singing hymns is another wonderful gift we can give our children to equip them to be soldiers of the cross. We try to sing every night the Wisdom Booklet theme hymn. We also say our memory verses each night that relates to the Wisdom Booklet we are working on.. I purchased off Ebay a set of 10 Bibles that are the same so each child is on the same page etc.We take turns alternating five verses reading aloud. We look for the character quality or things being learned in the Wisdom Booklet.as we read.We also will discuss things as the Lord brings them to our attention as we read.. .

We enjoy reading through the Bible in Chronicle order for these reasons.

  1. We read the Bible in a year as a family
  2. When each child graduates from our homeschool we will be proud to see how many times they have reads through the Bible when they graduate
  3. They are hearing Bible vocabulary over & over even from a young age which will be apart of them
  4. This will build a foundation for other studies like Sunday school, Wed. night Bible Club & as we study out Wisdom Booklets.
  5. Following the schedule is easy for Dad & Mom to prepare.
  6. Reading in Chronicle logical order helps our family see things in order.
  7. I also count the books of the Bible on our reading book list along with our other books .

We also enjoy doing Sword searcher contest to find the chapters we are reading in our devotions. We learned this from Cathy Adams one of the teachers at our Wed. night kids Bible club.

  1. say "swords up" (hold the Bible staight up & down like a sword)
  2. say "arms" ( hold the Bible flat on your hand)
  3. say "verse" ( ex.Psalm 19 -note : Bible is still flat on your hand)
  4. say "verse again"( ex.Psalm 19-note:  Bible is still flat on your hand)
  5. say "charge" (look up scripture)
  6. 1rst one to have it stands or says I got it
