Truth Through Metaphors

This morning I've been listening to the CD's in The Lost Tools of Writing by Andrew Kern of Circe.  Something he said there clarified in my mind the agrarian vs industrial models I've mentioned before.

God designed us to think metaphorically. This is a very important thing.

[There is an ]Analogy between the material, physical realm we live in and the spiritual world. God created us to understand the spiritual realm through the physical realm. That's why the agrarian metaphors are so important and why the industrial economy undercuts the human spirit. We start thinking in factory metaphors instead of agrarian metaphors. But look at Jesus' parables. He doesn't talk about how the factory owner goes into the factory and lines things up. He talks about the sower going into the field because our spiritual lives are organic not mechanistic.

I was struck by that also. I didn't get to go to that lecture but I enjoyed listening to it the other day. It enlightened me to the use of metaphors with the children. We had a long discussion last night, trying to come up with metapors for different aspects of life. It was fun and helpful.

I've never thought about this Patti, but you are right!
I was raised "from the land" of the Ozark Hills on a Century Farm. In fact, I am the seventh generation of my family to be raised on this farm. I was not homeschooled, but my parents and grandparents taught me many things. Through hard work we raised our own food. I was taught a great deal about trees, plants, and animals.
Now I am married to a "city boy" and we live in town. I have wandered many roads in my life. But I have never felt spiritually lost or broken. I have never felt far God. Why? I think becasue I am never far from his creation. I can feel recharged just by looking up at the milky way at night.
I am convinced that I have a deep reverence for the Creator because I have a deep reverence for his Creation. The two are deeply intertwined. I see the world as a whole and also see my life as having deep purpose.
I was not created for the economic good or just to "contribute to society." That is such a degrading thought! Ick!
