Yesterday while driving home I was enjoying a distant memory. We had just finished grocery shopping and we were making the half hour treck back home. I asked my oldest to get out that 24 pack of popsicles we had just bought. Everyone cheered! They savored their popsicles. It's not often Mom allows you to eat these and in the van, too. So when they were finished, their eyes bugged out when I suggested to go ahead and have another. More cheering followed by another long pause as they once again enjoyed their treat. Oh Mom, it's to good to be true; we can have a third! Yay!! This time the pause was a little short. Then I offered them (#4) the last popsicles in the box. My oldest said, "Are you nuts!!" Smiling and laughing I said no and that's when I remembered. I told them of the story of when I was younger and had gone to stay at Grandma's for awhile. Actually it had happened more than once, but that didn't matter. Grandma had a deep freeze that was three times the size of ours. Their eyes widened as I told them that I believed it was a 15 cubic foot. With amazement their jaws opened and the licking temporarily stopped when I told them that Grandma kept that thing full of popsicles, just popsicles. My two cousins and I were allowed to eat as many popsicles as we wanted, anytime we wanted to. Lol, they just stared real hard at me. And I went on. Sometimes we would eat so many popsicles we weren't hungry for supper and on those nights Grandma always seemed to make beef steak, mashed potatoes all drowned in brown gravy with hot rolls and sweet butter. Somehow we managed to get an appetite real fast and eat that as well. By now, I swear, some of them looked like they were going to drool. I saw smiles all around and everyone was murmuring, mmmm. It's to bad they will never get to know my Grandma. She has lost her memory and now sits quietly in a home. Thank you Grandma, I won't forget it's ok to let kids have popsicles, as many as they want. Of course times were different too. We ran all over God's green creation and spent up all of our energy. It's to bad too that my children won't ever know that freedom. However on a hot day like these have been and when everyone is running about, we will eat popsicles. As many they want or atleast until the box is empty.
