The Cost of Homeschooling
(view similar articles on Homeschooling)
An article at Bankrate.com asks: Is Homeschooling Expensive? The article has costs from several families and the range seems to be $300-$2,000 per year. Since I have two daughters in 8th and 10th grades, I could relate to the following: The most-expensive time in a home schooling parent's life is when the children reach high school.
Christopher
Klicka, senior attorney with the Home School Legal Association, home
schools his seven children, including two daughters (ages 14 and 16),
who are following a rigorous college-prep course. This semester, they
are taking English literature from a teacher who charges each of them
$300 for the course. They recently completed an advanced-placement (AP)
American history class, which was taught by a teacher certified by the
College Board, which administers the AP program. That cost Klicka $400
per daughter. It's pretty typical
around here (southwest Ohio) to pay about $200 per semester for a high
school level class . Add on books and sometimes supplies and it
adds up. Now, this is nothing compared to private school tuition,
but to many families the high school classes can add up.
What do you spend per year for homeschooling? How about for your high schooler?
I'll answer my own questions: According to Quicken: $2,700 for two
students in 2006. The high schooler is about $1,800 of the total
(70%). These costs do not include piano lessons or summer camps. I'm afraid to see that total!
