How Do Clients Feel About a Home-based Business?
(view similar articles on Home Based Businesses)
I run a home based tax preparation business form my home and I meet with clients at my dining room table. Do they like it that way? Or do I come across as "unprofessional"?
Bruce Katcher, Ph.D. president of The Discovery Consulting Group, Inc. writes that there are advantages to your clients of having a home-based business. Here are a few advantages that he sees:
1) MORE TIME TO FOCUS ON THE CLIENT.
No commute!
2) AVAILABILITY
You are also more likely to be available to your clients when they call during non-business hours.
3) LESS OVERHEAD COST
Maintaining even a small office outside of your home is extremely expensive. The money you save can be partly passed on to your clients in the form of lower fees.
If you need to meet with clients, do so at their office. This saves them their valuable time.
He adds 4 more reasons. You can read about them here.
Most micro business owners like the advantages of working from home that it offers them and their families. But now you have three ways that a home-based business is good for your clients too!

Hi Carol.
First, I would like to say thank you for this blog. I have read quite a bit and have found it very informative.
Here is a little background about me before I ask my questions. I have been teaching in the Florida public school system for 13 years. I have a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and a master's degree in Educational Leadership. I am certified in elementary education and educational leadership. I have 3 elementary aged children of my own. In recent years, I have felt the public school system is not where I want my children to learn. I want them to have a firm christian foundation included in their education. I too feel that as a teacher in a public school system my hands are tied when it comes to my christian faith (I have stories). I have felt for some time now that God is leading me into another direction. I just do not know how to get started. I have some short term and long term goals I am hoping you can help me with.
My long term goal is to open my own Christian based private school. I have a great vision, however, I do not have an excess of funds, nor is my credit the best. How can I begin to work towards my long term goal? Where do I begin?
My short term goal is to teach a small group of children (along with my own) either based out of my home or to find an inexpensive place to meet at. I have had no luck in finding an inexpensive place as of yet. The church I belong to is already running a pre-school/elementary school. Also, I have to find out if I am allowed to run a "small business" out of my home because we have a home owners association in my neighborhood and I believe it states that there cannot be any businesses run from the home. I will have to find out more about that though.
Any advice or information you can lend would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
M.K.

MK,
I admire your foresight and planning and wish you the best of success.
I think you might start by tutoring one on one or in small classes. You can do that from home or go to the students home or use the public library.
You can also build a reputation for yourself by tutoring and maybe get hired to teach a full class by a homeschool co-op or start your own class.
Visit www.HomeschoolCPA.wordpress.com and read the entries under Co-ops. I answer several questions about the difference between co-ops and private schools.
My book Homeschool Co-ops will also be helpful to you. Read more about it by clicking on the picture on the right sidebar.
