Jan. 15, 2010 Christian Keyboarding
The ability to type and use a word processing program is an essential skill in today’s world. There are many programs available but after looking them over, Leanne Beitel could not find a program that taught the touch-typing method using Biblical references for typing drill – a necessary requirement for the private school arena that she worked in. She decided to produce her own program that would combine the fundamentals of touch-typing, MLA and APA report formatting, with the added bonus of using passages of Scripture for typing material. Keyboarding for the Christian School is the product that she developed.
Crew Members received two products for review – Keyboarding for the Christian School (suitable for grades 6 and up) and Keyboarding for the Christian School, Elementary Version (for grades K-5). Both programs focus on mastery of the keyboard using the touch-typing method and drill practice using Scripture references. Each lesson begins with an introduction of two new keys, followed by a review section for previously learned keys, and half the lessons include optional timed typing drills.
The upper level program also covers the following topics:
- MLA Reports
- APA Reports
- Cover Page
- Works Cited
- Bibliography
- Personal Business Letters
- Business Letters
- Envelopes
- Proofreader’s Marks
While initially made for Christian schools, these programs need no adaptation for the homeschool environment. If you’d like to learn more, you can see a few sample pages here. Both versions of Keyboarding for the Christian School are available as e-books (upper level is $15.95 and elementary version is $12.95).

Jan. 13, 2010 Saxon factsfirst
factsfirst is an online math program from the publishers that you brought you Saxon Math.
factsfirst was created for children to develop fluency in basic math facts in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division through placements tests, lessons, review, and practice. Arcade style games reward students upon completion of a unit.
To start, each child creates a self portrait in the Character Creator. The image is then featured in every lesson throughout the program.
The lessons consist of five basic segments: new facts, commutative property, practice, quiz, and scoring. New facts are gradually introduced to children as they work toward mastery. Facts are grouped into units with each lesson in a unit introducing two new facts. A child must master these facts before moving into a new unit. Students practice over many sessions to reinforce their understanding of basic math facts in each unit. A child will need to master these facts before beginning a new unit. There are more than 360 activities to engage and encourage children to quickly and accurately respond to questions and advance to the next level.
An arcade featuring five games rewards children for completing a lesson. This helps to reinforce math facts and provide incentive, as well as relaxation and fun before beginning the next activity.
For parents, there is a Math Fact Matrix that provides an overview of your child’s performance on individual math facts. It is calculated based on speed, frequency, and other indicators of proficiency.
factsfirst is being distributed by Saxon, but was created by Skills Tutor, a sister company to Saxon. This program will complement any primary math program, and was not created specifically to accompany Saxon Math.
You can view more details and access demos on their website. Crew members received a 90-day subscription. A one-year subscription is available for $49.99.

Jan. 4, 2010 Barchowsky Fluent Handwriting
Last year, I shared a bit about my in-a-hurry children and how frustrated I get that they can't (or won't) write neatly. I was excited to receive Barchowsky Fluent Handwriting and start using it with my children. I definitely saw marked improvement in their writing.
8 members of this year's Homeschool Crew will have the opportunity to test and review various products from Barchowsky Fluent Handwriting ---
Beginners' Handwriting develops gross motor skills. It introduces children to the rhythmic movement they need for a lifetime of easy, legible handwriting.
Twenty-eight, reusable, large sheets (11 x 17 inches, or 28 x 43 centimeters) come with a Teacher's Guide. Place the sheets on an easel for maximum eye-hand coordination, or tack them to a wall. Trace and copy patterns and letters. Most sheets have simple, warmup patterns to assist lowercase letter formation. Two sheets introduce capital formations.
Let children love to learn with the pre-writing activities in the Teacher's Guide. And yes, there are ample suggestions for using each sheet, and for teaching both right and left-handers.
Fluent Handwriting Book & CD-ROM ~ BFH gives you a complete instructional package for all ages. The manual is for reference. It has all the essential information to learn and teach the BFH method. The CD-ROM has additional help, and exemplars for lessons.
FIX IT...WRITE is for the older student or adult who needs help with legibility and/or speed.
The format is hole-punched, loose-leaf sheets with instructions, lessons and lined sheets for practice. Users are encouraged to put the sheets in a ring binder; then add all practice to that binder. Date each practice page. After a couple of weeks, review your work. You will be amazed at your progress, and motivated to continue.
Fix It...Write is in two sections. The first is for students who primarily use print-script, and need to make letters flow with legibility and speed. The other is for students who prefer conventional cursive, and have the same need for improved handwriting.
Users may wish to practice with words and sentences that relate to individual interests. Practice will be more entertaining! If working with the BFH method Barchowsky Fluent Hand, the font is recommended to create custom pages for additional practice.
Here is what our Crew members have to say:

Jan. 4, 2010 Dollar Homeschool / Ray's Arithmetic
Have you ever read a book or heard stories about what students learned in the pioneer days of this country? The breadth of knowledge they covered was astounding and the depth of the students' understanding was simply amazing. Thinking about it always leaves me wanting to capture those days and bring them into the learning environment for my children.
Now, we CAN! Dollar Homeschool brings us several curriculum choices directly from those pioneer days of one-room schoolhouses. The Ecclectic Education Series was used almost exclusively in American classrooms from roughly 1865 to 1915. Included in this series is Ray's Arithmetic and the McGuffey Readers along with books for History, Science and Grammar.
Dollar Homeschool has put these valuable tools on CD for easy-to-use books that you and your family will cherish and enjoy for the length of your school career.
This year, the Crew will be reviewing Ray's Arithmetic which is "a complete K-12 math curriculum, from counting to calculus." Over 100 million students were educated using this curriculum!
On the Dollar Homeschool website, they also have a video which goes into great detail about why they want to make these wonderful teaching tools available to every student. After you check out the video and website, come on back here to see what the Crew members are saying about Ray's Arithmetic!

Dec. 23, 2009 Math Tutor DVD
Math Tutor DVD is returning for a second voyage with the Homeschool Crew! I must say that this was one of my favorite vendors from Year 1, simply because it helped my oldest daughter (who hates math) better understand Algebra concepts. Jason Gibson, the man behind Math Tutor DVD, is an excellent tutor! (You can read his credentials here.) While he is very modest, I think he's something special - anyone who can take difficult math concepts and make them understandable and fun is pretty great in my book!
Year 2 Crew Members will be receiving a copy of the Basic Math Word Problem DVD. Year 1 Crew Members already reviewed this DVD here. This DVD sells for $26.99, and contains approximately 8 hours of teaching time. It covers topics such as adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing whole numbers, decimals, and fractions; as well as covering percent, ratio, and proportion. You can learn more about this DVD, and see screenshots, at the website.
In addition, all current Crew Members (which includes returning members from Year 1, and all new Year 2 members) will be receiving the Young Minds Numbers and Counting DVD. Young Minds is new to the product line at Math Tutor DVD. It sells for $24.99 and is targeted at preschoolers. Young children will learn to count from 1 to 10 while listening to classical music and viewing interesting and entertaining photographs and videos. You can view a sampler video here.
Crew Members - please sign the Mr. Linky with the name of the title that you are reviewing (or put "both" if you're reviewing both of the above-mentioned products). Thank you!

Dec. 18, 2009 Kregel Publications
In my work with The Old Schoolhouse Magazine over the past several years, I've come in contact with various book publishers that I've come to know, trust, and love. Kregel is one of those publishers.
Some of my very favorite books from Kregel include the Circle C Adventure Series by Susan Marlow (titles include Long Ride Home, The Dangerous Decision, The Family Secret, my personal favorite San Francisco Smugglers, and the soon to be released Trouble with Treasure) and The River Series by Stephanie Reed (titles include Across the Wide River and The Light Across the River).
Many of our Crew members have received a copy of Bertie's War - a new title from Kregel. Barbara Tifft Blakey's name is familiar in the homeschool arena, as she is also the author of the Total Language Plus series.
Everything has been going wrong for Bertie lately.
No matter how hard she tries to do and say the right thing, Bertie keeps tumbling into embarrassing--and sometimes dangerous--situations. Her stern father has too many rules, her know-it-all sister won't stop teasing her, and her mischievous younger brother keeps getting into trouble. But what makes her really afraid are those Communist missiles pointed right at the U.S. As Bertie starts seventh grade in the fall of 1962, news of these missiles throws the nation into a panic and Bertie suddenly feels completely out of control. Can Bertie confront an ugly truth about herself and face her fears--once and for all?
Please take the time to visit Kregel's website and check out all the great books they have available. Then, check back to see what the Crew members have to say about Bertie's War.

We at the Homeschool Crew LOVE our repeat vendors! Kinderbach is one of the vendors who has returned to work with us again for Year 2. (If you would like to see what the Year 1 Crew had to say about Kinderbach, please click here.)
Kinderbach is an online music curriculum for preschoolers and early elementary-aged students (ages 2-7). All you need to effectively use Kinderbach is your computer and an inexpensive keyboard or piano. There is no musical background required to effectively teach this course. And your child will learn to play real, familiar tunes! This photo montage will show you a sampling of what you can expect from Kinderbach:
You might also want to view this video to learn more about Kinderbach at Home.
KinderBach teaches by video but does not let the children become mind-numbingly complacent. Each session gives an opportunity to participate in a variety of ways often with activity pages. Games, puzzles, puppets and music are played through hands-on printed PDFs. Learning is concrete and tactile.
Each member of the Year 2 Crew will be sharing their thoughts on Kinderbach here:

Dec. 18, 2009 MathScore / Accurate Learning
MIT graduates set out to create an online program that would provide adaptive math practice to students. The result is MathScore, a mastery-based program that has been proven to raise test scores.
MathScore targets grades two through Algebra I, though it can be used by first graders, and certainly can provide drill to older students as well. There are suggestions for topics by grade level, but you (or your student) can choose which topics to work on.
Looking at the Grade 3 topics, there are not only your standard math facts, but also topics such as weight conversion, unit cost, and quadrilateral types, for a total of 57 topics. Grade 6 includes math facts, plus proportions, decimals to fractions, restaurant bills, congruent and similar triangles, batting averages... 86 topics in all. High School includes a total of 69 topics covering basic math facts and algebra I topics such as absolute value, trinomial factoring, applied linear equations, and nonlinear functions.
MathScore's pricing starts at $14.95/month for the first child and gets significantly cheaper beyond the first child. With a 9-month commitment, the first child's price can be locked in at $9.95/month.
A really nice aspect of the pricing is that you can freeze your account (over Christmas break, or while on vacation) and activate it again when you return, which means you aren’t paying for time that you are not using.
There is a free trial available, so you can test it out for yourself here. Each member of the Crew will be trying and reviewing MathScore. Be sure to check back and read what they have to say about it.
