February 6, 2009 Instant Fisherman: "A Lesson For the New Year
Repeated with permission from the February 2009 BCH Newsletter
As my family and many of our friends know, I am an avid outdoorsman. I love to hunt, camp, fish, boat, canoe, hike through woods and over mountains, and do almost anything that allows me to spend time away from city life.
At the same time, my love of nature and the great outdoors also hexes me with a desire to have latest gadgets and “coolest stuff”.
Whether it be a scope for one of my rifles, a reel for a fishing pole, or even scent spray to mask my human odor from whatever game is my quarry, I like to buy stuff to fill my tackle boxes and back-packs. (I know Bass Pro Shop like the back of my hand.)
Sometimes I spend my money very wisely and sometimes my hard earned cash has been known to be wasted on gimmicks or a “gizmo of the month”.
One such purchase was about 12 years ago when I responded to an infomercial while watching television on Thanksgiving Day.
The item so cleverly advertised was the “Instant Fisherman”.
The concept was simple enough; an all-in-one retractable fishing pole with an attached reel, which could easily be pulled out in a moment and cast into fish laden waters.
Though my logical side said, “You don’t need this!”, my illogical side said, “What a cool thing to have in the car!”
So with no hesitation I eagerly dialed the toll-free number and without trepidation I ordered my very own “Instant Fisherman” for $49.95… but that’s not all! I also got a book on “How to Tie Fishing Knots” (which I never read). Also, because I ordered so quickly, my consumer savvy attitude was gifted with a small package of fishing paraphernalia any experienced fisherman would either hide in embarrassment re-gift to an 6 year old child just learning to fish.
Finally, the big day arrived! My “Instant Fisherman” was delivered to our house while I was at my office. My wife, Martha, called me to (a) notify me of the delivery; (b) ask what I bought and the ever important; (c) what did it cost? I quickly justified to her why I spent $50.00 on something most my fishing buddies would not be caught dead with.
I then passed the remainder of that day thinking about all the big bass and in-land snook I was going to catch whenever the fancy struck me while driving the back-roads of west Broward county.
After work, I drove with abandonment through I-95 end-of-day traffic and zig-zagged through commuter snarls in a manner that Dale Earnhardt Jr. would have envied.
I barged through our front door, quickly shot out a barrage of “Hi everyone!”, “How was your day?”, and “Love you guys!” as I ran to my desk and peered down at the box before me.
Quickly I tore through the cornucopia of foam popcorn and packaging to finally pull my “Instant Fisherman” from its cardboard sarcophagus.
Proudly I showed it to my family and explained to my oldest son how his father was now going to able to fish wherever and whenever he (I) wanted.
The following day, I carefully placed my “Instant Fisherman” in the back of my Explorer and my mind wandered off thinking about line breaking snook as I slammed the trunk close… and that is where my “Instant Fisherman” remained for almost a year.
Yes, after all the fanfare and fantasizing about using my “Instant Fisherman”, I completely forgot about it until one day I was driving out in Davie and saw the “perfect” fishing hole on the side of the road. It was then that I remembered the holy grail of fishing apparatuses snuggled away in the back of my vehicle.
I quickly pulled over to the side of the road and recovered my “Instant Fisherman” and geared it up with a leader and a lure I was sure would bring in “the big one”.
I cast my line with held breath as I watched my prized lure sail through the air… and it kept sailing… and sailing… and sailing until it landed on the far side of the canal because my line broke while in mid-cast!
What made it more frustrating was that my line broke because the reel did not work.
The particular “Instant Fisherman” I received a year earlier turned out to be a piece of junk!
Without getting in to too much detail, returning the “Instant Fisherman” for a refund or repair was an act in futility. So I resolved myself to the fact I learned a $50.00 lesson to not always believe what I see on television - it was a lesson I was bitter about having to learn.
There is a wonderful end to this story!
About 2 months ago (12 years after I first made my purchase, I saw another infomercial for the “Instant Fisherman”, but this time they were offering two “Instant Fisherman” for $10.00 less than what I paid for my one “Instant Fisherman”… plus box full of fishing goodies!
On a whim I called the company and explained my experience with trying to return my defective “Instant Fisherman” twelve years ago. I was told someone would look into the matter and get back to me.
I hung up the phone wondering why I even bothered calling, but was amazingly surprised later that day when I received a call back from one of the company’s representatives stating they were going to ship me a replacement “Instant Fisherman”!
Even more amazing is that about a week before Christmas, I received two “Instant Fisherman” and a box of the before mentioned fishing goodies!
So what does this have to do with the New Year?
Everything!
I am sure some of us experienced this past year a situation where we felt offended, betrayed or believed we were taken advantage of. In fact, there might be some of us who were hurt by someone this past year - even by someone we considered a friend.
Let us embrace 2009 as a brighter, more positive year… and one which the negative baggage from 2008 does not weight us down.
When my sons and I sit on the bank of a Highway 27 canal hoping to catch a big one, I intend to believe that no matter what has happened in the past, redemption and things being made right can, and will, be done by His will.
Happy New Year! - John Kernohan, Husband, Father, Fisherman, Hunter, Outdoorsman... and Humbled Consumer

December 12, 2008 Giving (and Receiving) The Pefect Gift
|
At this time of the year, many of us are wondering what holiday gifts to get our love ones. Sometimes, trying to find the "perfect" gift within our budget makes this a bit of a daunting task.
We wonder, while wandering through the tinsel-lined aisles of Target, if the article of clothing we are considering for someone will fit properly or if the gift we finally decide upon will actually be something the intended recipient will enjoy.
The stores become more and more crowded as the holidays get closer and parking lots become a gauntlet of abandoned shopping carts scattered about and erratic vehicles jockeying for places to park. For our family, turning our over-sized SUV into the shopping plaza actually can become a challenge of survival for fittest.
Finally, the big day arrives and we sit watching our children and loved ones open their gifts. We watch their expressions trying to get a preliminary impression as to whether or not the item we decided upon is a hit or a miss.
It is so very awesome to see their faces light up with excitement when they open the package hiding the one perfect gift they have wanted… and occasionally there is the disappointing feeling when we realize the person has the "what in the world is this" look on their fact as they stare down at the gift we toiled the night before to concealed in wrapping paper and bows.
Then there is the "perfect" gift we get our child who squeals and jumps in delight when they tear through the wrapping… only to find the item a week later laying on the floor no longer of any interest to someone who dropped hints and left newspaper clippings advertising the gift on the kitchen counter for the two months leading up to the holidays.
The only one who always knows exactly what the perfect gift any of us really needs is God. The ultimate gift of salvation through Him laying His life down for us is by far all we require.
Yet, our Lord gifts us even more with the generous gift of our children. The scriptures teach us our children are a gift from the Lord and He entrusts us as parents with training them in the way (His way) they should travel through life.
I believe the gift of having children is not only the child itself, but that by having children He gives us many opportunities each day to become better people by striving to be good parents. Our children watch our every action and they learn by how we handle life’s issues. No matter what we say, our children see our true nature by our actions and reactions to situations. I also find that I have more patience during conflicts when I have my children with me.
As our gifts grow older, they test the waters more. They challenge us in different ways and at times can even be hard on us. Giving birth and the "early" years is a walk in the park compared to what comes next… teen-agers!
I never knew how much I did not know until these little blessings eagerly started pointing out my flaws and mistakes. Everyday can be a bit harder to communicate and understand them. Sometimes I have looked up and asked God, "Why?"
Yet, He knows all. When He entrusted these gifts with us He knew what would be ahead for each us as parents. He knew those blessings would bring us a love beyond words that fills our hearts. He also knew those blessings would wear us down, makes us cry, and at times make us stronger while standing our ground.
1 Corinthians (13:4-8) tells us what real love is, "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails…"
When I think of this scripture when having conflict with my children I ask myself, "What would God want me to do?" More times than I wish to admit I do not have the patience or the softness I should have. I can get grumpy and let these gifts wear me down. But there is a much bigger picture and it is during these trials we are able to grow in our walk with the Lord. It is during these times we can actually teach our blessings by walking the walk more so than by speaking the words.
I know right now a lot of what I say seems to go in my children’s one ear and out the other, but His word instructs us if we teach our children about His way then they will come back to it no matter how far they might stray. So with time and patience these trials will polish us, benefit our children in the long run, and help make us better parents and disciples of our Lord.
From our family to yours, we wish each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas and a Wonderful New Year! We look forward to seeing everyone again in 2009!
Happy Holidays,
The Kernohans (John, Martha, Brittany, Gracie, Johnny, MacKenzie & Dillon)

November 15, 2008 Giving Thanx!
|
"Giving Thanks!" Around this time of year, this is a term we hear often. From the pulpit, from the media, from our family, and from strangers on the street, the term "Giving Thanks" is a common phrase shared by many as a prelude to their opinions of what we should be thankful for.
So with the spirit of "Giving Thanks" in mind, I too am going to share my opinion of what I believe is one of the things we should be thankful for.
Of course I believe it is important to be thankful for our health, our finances, our children & family, our friends, our freedoms of faith and religion, and so many other things that are unique and personal for each of us.
There is one other thing I am thankful for; that being our ability to think for ourselves and to stand up for what we believe is right.
I was sitting in front of the television, as many of us have; these past weeks watching the two presidential candidates talk about not only why they should be our country’s next president, but also why the other candidate should not. Each has made all sorts of accusations about the other with authority and confidence. Yet, a little investigation of each of the candidate’s allegations about each other often shows their claims are not always 100% correct
During one of these nightly television sessions of jumping back and forth between FOX, CNBC, MSNBC, CNN, and Headline News, I saw a trailer for a movie titled "Changeling". Typically I would not have paid much attention to this particular commercial due to me not being much of a fan of previous movies of the lead actress, but I am a big fan of the director.
From the brief 30 second commercial promoting this movie, I was intrigued by what was claimed being "actual events" behind the film. I went on-line, just as I did to investigate the claims of the before-mentioned presidential candidates, and was shocked by what I learned.
This movie is about the long-forgotten story of a working class mother, Christine Collins, and her struggle to find her missing son, Walter, while fighting a corrupt and sinister political power. In 1928, Los Angels was in the grips of what has been described as a despotic political infrastructure, which was enforced by Police Chief James Davis and his police department that often terrorized the city at will. His rule began to unravel when Collins, a single mother raising a child in a working-class neighborhood in Los Angeles, reported her nine-year-old son missing. Months of fruitless searching followed, and the police had nothing to show, except for a bunch of negative publicity and public pressure to solve the kidnapping.
When a boy claiming to be Walter was discovered in Illinois, Christine Collins, and all involved in the search, were relieved. Photographs and letters were exchanged, and the authorities believed the case of the missing boy was solved. Collins scraped together the money to bring her son back home, and police department organized a very public reunion of the now-found child and his anxious mother. Hoping to put a stop to the scrutiny surrounding their inability to solve not just this case, but other cases as well, and also desperate for a positive human-interest story to help over-shadow the LAPD’s string of scandals, members of the department felt the mother and her son’s reunion would bring redemption for the police department.
The only problem was that the child who arrived home was not Walter!
Despite her immediate and repeated cries for help that the boy was not her son, Collins was rebuffed by the officer handling the case and was told, as per the City Council’s hearing transcripts, to "try him out for a couple of weeks." Confused and disoriented, she agreed.
Three weeks later, Collins brought the boy from Illinois back, insisting that this child was not her son. Unaccustomed to having their actions questioned by anyone, especially a woman, the LAPD subjected Collins to slander and committed her to the County psychopathic ward as a patient, instead of admitting the mistake of returning the wrong boy. Collins was forced to spend five horrible days in the psychiatric ward, and was kept against her will due to what was referred to as a "Code 12", which referred to a difficult or inconvenient person (usually a woman), jailed or committed to the local psychopathic ward without a warrant or any legal due process.
The boy from Illinois eventually admitted to being a runaway who wanted to come to Hollywood to meet his favorite actor. He concocted a plan to turn himself in to the local police as Collins’ missing son, Walter, have Collins pay for his bus fare to Los Angeles, and provide him room and board.
Although Collins died in 1935 not knowing what ever happened to her son, her legacy, though almost forgotten, was powerful. Her quest to find out what happened, and never giving up no matter what anyone threw at her, Collins’ tenacity carried her through things that would break many of us. Collins never once stopped fighting and brought light to the corruption of the city officials who were suppose to serve and protect those they were actually preying upon.
How true this is when it comes to our own lives. Sometimes those in "authority", who are required to serve and protect us, will actually attack and make false claims against us.
This in itself is sad, but what really is upsetting is how some people will believe these false claims without taking the time to investigate the facts.
I have watched people who are suppose to be unbiased and supportive in their roles actually cause division and destroy the reputations families
So what am I "Giving Thanks" for this time of the year?
I am thankful for the fact that God has gifted me with the mind to think for myself and not follow others like a blind sheep just because they claim something about another person is true.
I am thankful I live in a country where I am allowed to question the actions of others
I am thankful God has gifted me with a mind smart enough to pick up the phone and use the Internet to investigate an issue when I hear someone in authority make negative claims.
I am not saying we should not respect those in authority, but I am saying just as Jesus attacked the false priests and chased the money changers out of the Temple, we should all stand up for what we believe in - and not turn our backs on an individual just because someone in authority makes negative claims against the person.
In closing, I am most thankful for my improving health, my improving finances, my children & family, my true friends, my freedoms of faith and religion, and so many other things that are unique and personal to me.
Martha, our children, and I wish each and everyone of you a Happy Thanksgiving and a wonderful Holiday Season! - John

February 11, 2008 From the homes of your former FPEA Leaders
Dear FPEA Member:
This letter is written on behalf of previous officers and board members of the FPEA, representing almost 70 years of service and leadership to this organization.
By now, many of you have received a packet of information from the FPEA which included amended Articles of Incorporation, amended Bylaws, a stamped postcard ballot and a letter from the current State Chairman, Gary Weaver. State Chairman Weaver has asked you to review the information and quickly vote YES to the proposed changes.
We urge you – DO NOT VOTE Yes to the proposed changes.
The current language in the FPEA Bylaws in Section IX, Miscellaneous, Section 2 – Amendments states:
These Bylaws may be amended by a two-thirds vote of all votes cast by mailed-in ballots that will be mailed to all members of the Association as well as at a properly called meeting of the Association, or only through mailed-in ballots if requested by the Board. Any amendment must first be passed by a two-thirds vote of the Board of Directors and then a description and arguments giving various viewpoints, along with the mailed-in ballot, published in the newsletter or mailed out separately.
A description of the amendments and arguments representing differing viewpoints were not included. The FPEA, as a corporation, is bound by law to comply with its bylaws including how to make amendments to those bylaws. Failure to comply could result in future litigation. The current board failed to meet the requirement for amending the bylaws in that it did not supply those arguments. This bylaw revision is a direct violation of the Bylaws of the current organization. This action is a clear disregard for the foundation and structure of the FPEA.
Here is a short review of a few proposed changes:
Proposed: An organization based on Judeo-Christian values – Rather, the FPEA, founded in 1984, has grown to the largest and most comprehensive state homeschool organization with one common purpose - to support home education in Florida. Our unity is based on our common purpose, not on modality, religion or method of homeschooling. The FPEA was founded as an inclusive, membership driven organization.
Proposed: A state chairman elected by the Board of Directors – Currently, as a membership driven organization, the members directly elect the State Chairman. The State Chairman can then confidently represent the organization on the local, state and national levels knowing that s/he has been directly elected by the members served.
Proposed: A tiered system of exclusive membership, voting members can only be current homeschooling families – Rather, the FPEA’s membership is enjoyed by all persons who support the Association and all members have the right to vote.
Proposed: Directors serve for 4 years – Current directors are elected every two years thereby enabling short term leadership, change of leadership when disenchanted and diversity on the Board of Directors.
Proposed: Acceptance of donations, government grants and contracts – Currently, the acceptance of donations has historically been practiced. However, the inclusion of the wording “government grants and contracts” may expose the FPEA to adverse compliance requirements and excessive administrative reporting. Government grants rarely are issued to recipients without some form of performance modification attached, and all require outside audit review by independent Certified Public Accountants. Additionally, the FPEA has always discouraged the acceptance of any financial type of assistance from public education to home educators. How double-minded to accept it or seek it for the organization!
These proposed changes are not technical in nature, nor will they “ensure more and effective governance and efficient operation” as claimed by Chairman Weaver. These changes don’t just revise, they alter the very fabric and character of an organization that has been successful and nationally recognized as the leader among state homeschool associations. This organization, the FPEA, is the organization you chose to join as a member and it is your voice that must be heard.
By violating the By-laws and proposing the elimination of the participation of its members, the Board of Directors is displaying a clear and blatant disregard for the FPEA membership and the very core mission they swore to uphold.
We urge you again to NOT support these proposed changes. The FPEA is YOUR organization. Take it back – do not relinquish control to directors who believe they are above the statutes that govern the FPEA.
The FPEA is preparing to celebrate its 24th anniversary. The leaders who have signed below represent serving the FPEA for 23 of the 24 years of its existence.
We urge you to vote NO on the proposed amendments. Let’s remain Florida’s largest, nonprofit, all inclusive homeschool family association.
Sincerely,
Cheryl Boglioli (State Chairman 2004-06, BOD 2000-06)
LaWanda Sutherland (Secretary 2003-05, BOD 1999-05)

February 1, 2007 Girl Scout Cookies - I love 'em!!
I love this time of the year...
The holidays have just passed, the weather here in South-Florida is great, it's the dawn of a new year, and most importantly... IT'S ALSO TIME FOR GIRL SCOUT COOKIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Those wonderful little round pieces of heaven that you can buy in a box only once a year.
My favorite has always been the Do-Si-Dos Peanut Butter Cremes. In recent years, though, I have become a big fan of the Samoas (Yummy!) and the Tagalongs Peanut Butter Patties (REALLY Yummy!).
I say we rally for a new national holiday - Girl Scout Cookie Day!! Everyone would get the day off from work. We then would gather in parks and backyards around the country to gorge ourselves on Girl Scout Cookies. I LIKE THIS IDEA VERY MUCH!!!!!

December 25, 2006 Finding the Right Words for Christmas
Hello Everyone:
Just when I think I can't find the words to express how much our family appreciates all the well wishes and support we have received this year from so many people, I come across the following...
The Spirit of Christmas
Anon
I have a list of people I know
All written in a book
And every year at Christmastime
I go and take a look
And that is when I realize
That those names are a part
Not of the book they're written in
But of my very heart
For each name stands for someone
Who has crossed my path some time
And in that meeting they've become
A treasured friend of mine
And once you've met some people
The years can not erase
The memory of a pleasant word
Or a friendly face
So when I send a Christmas card
That is addressed to you
It's because you're on that list
Of folk I'm indebted to
And you are one of many folk who
In times past I've met
And happen to be one of those
I don't want to forget
And whether I have known you for
Many years or few
In some way you have a part in
Shaping things I do
This, the spirit of Christmas, that
Forever and ever endures
May it leave it richest blessing
In the hearts of you and yours.
May you, your family and loved ones have a very Merry Christmas and a most wonderful New Year.
Happy Holidays,
John |

October 19, 2006 This Weekend's Funeral
|
I'll be leaving out of town tomorrow for Dad's older brother's (Uncle Menno's) funeral. Uncle Menno was the last person I would have thought would pass away. No one was aware of him having any ill-health conditions... his heart attack was so sudden and out-of-the-blue. I feel bad for Dad as he and his brothers and sisters (there's 11 siblings) are very close. Mom was so devastated when she called me with the news. She has always been so strong for the entire family. I've witnessed many times over the years Mom showing courage and strength when others crumbled. To hear the tears in her voice this week was almost more than I could bare. All I could do was listen and offer a comforting word here and there. I felt so helpless in trying to say the right thing to her, but in true "Mom style" she made a joke and did what she always does best - that being making the other person (this time me) feel better about a situation.

October 6, 2006 The Apology...
Recently I was out of town on FPEA business...
While I was away, someone made it a point to meet with me to apologize for something. The interesting thing about this incident was that this person had no reason to apologize to me, as he had never done anything that warranted an apology.
I was so impressed and touched by his desire to do "the right thing" - even when there was no issue between us that required him to do "the right thing".
We all have experienced at least one time in our lives where we have been hurt or felt slighted. And many of us, if not all of us, have wanted to receive an apology.
In fact, I think it is safe to say that I am not the only person to ever feel that I have deserved to receive an apology from someone for something that was once said or done.
Yet, when this person apologized to me recently for something that he did not have to apologize for, all of the other "wanted" apologies seemed unimportant and unnecessary. It made me think of how Jesus "apologized" from the cross for all of mankind's sins and indiscretions. It made me think of how God forgave us all due to Christs "apology".
How small and petty we can be for not forgiving others just because they have not apologized.
With all this said
I apologize! |

September 26, 2006 It saddens me...

I'm always saddened when someone is penalized due to the unfair actions of others. |

Why do some people lie and gossip about others?
Why do some people take great efforts in causing division?
Why do some people refuse to resolve problems they have with others - even when the "others" make repeated attempts to work things out?
Why do some people leave a trail of hurt and destruction in many of the groups, clubs and churches they have been a part of, but blame others for their actions?
Why do some families go for years as the unfortunate targets of these people?
Why do these people do what they do?
What can we do for these people? PRAY! |
