Does Time of Year Matter with Science?

For some unknown reason, which I will discover when I'm in paradise, I have the innate ability to take the simplest, most pleasurable things and make them a trial.

My excitement over our new science curriculum is a perfect example.  I purchased the Apologia Young Explorers Exploring Creation with Zoology I: Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day, and have been elated!  So excited to start this wonderful book and really study something fun (and for more than two weeks!).

But then, after asking a question about the other books in the series (why'd I do that?), I'm having second and third thoughts about starting with this book!  It is actually part of a series (currently three books).  The other two are Astronomy and Botany.  Should I start with Astronomy instead (it having less latin and boy being only 6 1/2?).  So, I bought the other books and they are sitting before me, driving me bonkers.

The tension mounts.

AND, should I use it (whichever one "it" will be) for a semester, or a year?  AND, if I use one in a semester, should I do a second right away?

BUT, the BIGGEST thing bugging me is what time of year to use any of them!  Is astronomy a winter thing?  Aren't flying creatures out in Spring?  Nesting, etc?  And Botany?  Spring again?  Should I start one now and try to finish it before summer?

I can't, for the life of me, come to a conclusion! This takes me back to the original problem.  I take simple things, often that don't matter, and make them difficult.  Possibly the 'ole spring fever is affecting the mind!  This urge within me to plan school for the next three years must be stopped! (This is where I go beat my head against the wall!)

[Taking a deep breath.....]

So, the time of year thing...if you have an opinion, idea, or if you've used these wonderful books and know from experience, please enlighten me!

Can you do each for one year? I haven't seen the books so I don't know how much material there is. But, as a "graduate" of public school my mantra is, "No matter how little they are getting it's more than they'd get in school."

Seriously, though, if it is just a semester each then start Astronomy in the fall for the first semester then do the buggies for the second semester. Even though it may be snowy (I'm guessing that's your concern?) at the beginning you'll be ready to go bug hunting as soon as they are out and you'll already have some background.

LOL! Your post is so funny. Not sure if you meant it to be, but it was to me. We mommies really drive ourselves crazy. I was that way with grammar/language arts curriculum. I cannot tell you the number of times I've bought new ones or didn't finish one....it's a strange cycle. But, everyday is a learning day....even if it isn't pretty and tied up in a nice package.

Enjoy your kiddos. :) Your boy will just be tickled that you're reading with him...no matter which subject.

I thingzooology would be great this time of year. Your gut was to start there so do it. Just work on it and see how long it takes and how he is getting it.

Your neurosis is cracking me up! Chilax (chill and relax) Sister! I just got my book last week and I am pumped! I haven't purchased the other books, YET! ;o) I think I'll wait till we finish this one- .

I knew there was a series arranged in the order of creation. This didn't concern me. My kids know the days of creation and studying it in this manner is a great concept. However, for us, I try to give my dc as much power and say in their education whenever possible. It aids in motivation which has been a problem for 8yods. Before selecting our book I showed the website to the kiddies and we talked about astronomy, botany and zoology. I asked which one they would like to study. They chose Zoology. Now they are excited to get started and have ownership that they chose this field of study- hence the "delight-directed" approach. It's all good. We will plod along at our leisurally pace w/o pressure of schedule or deadline expectations. When we finish they will pick another subject from this series.

L*rd willing, we are going to go to the Zoo in May, after we complete lesson 1. The Indy Zoo also has excellent plant life that is labeled throughout if U decide to go with Botany, you probably knew that ;o). Maybe you could meet us there? I also need to get back to the Children's Museum. I want the kids to experience their planetarium.

HTH,
Kristee

BTW, I love your bumblebee and the bible verse ticker thingy at the bottom! Where dya find em?

Apr. 1, 2006 - Kudos!

Kudos to you for even thinking about doing this with a 6 1/2 year old! My kids are now 14, 11, 10 & 8 and we haven't done ANY science textbooks! I personally do not like science... oh how I wish I did. We just do experiments from time to time and enjoy nature. Actually, my daughter is doing a science textbook this year with the pre-packaged curriculum I decided to go with (big mistake!)...and high school next year....wow...I don't even want to think about it!

I think in the big scheme of things it probably doesn't matter! But I am looking at the same curriculum for next year and iI can't decide which one to do either :)

About Me

In the beginning there was a tree.
The Tree of Life.
When sin entered the world,
we no longer had access to that tree.
We waited for another tree.
The Cross.
Jesus, as the perfect sacrifice for our sins once again gives us access to the
Tree of Life.
But we have to wait.
Wait for Heaven.
Until then, we are...
Living Life Between The Trees.
