Occupational Therapy

Quote of the Day: In the first place God made idiots. This was for practice. Then he made school boards. -Mark Twain

Still on-line, as is obvious...

Anyhow, yesterday my 8 year old son met with the school district's occupational therapist. As I have written about in the past, we homeschool through a program of the school district, partly because my son has disabilities and this program allows us to have access to specialists without hassle. (I have written in the past about "charter school guilt," that feeling you get as if you were "selling out" the homeschooling movement by accepting "goodies" from the school district. But there's also that feeling that they're our tax dollars too, and why shouldn't I use them?)

Back to the story. The charter school teacher that oversees our homeschooling is a Godsend! She's been a huge help to me many times, and has never given us a moment's trouble about using Christian materials or any of my eccentricities. She recommened the occupational therapist, and I thought she was "out to lunch," as the saying goes. But it turns out, that was a great move! Lots of the problems he has, which we attributed to his visual impairment (he's legally blind) actually are caused by some muscular weakness in his hands. (He has always had trouble with penmanship-- which has improved by dint of hard work.) He can't tie a knot, open a soda can or use scissors. The O-T has exercises that can help us with that.

My computer is really struggling and is about to crash... more tomorrow if it can be revived....

Glad your computer is holding on for now...I really enjoy reading your blogs. Aren't computer problems the worse?

That is so good that the O/T is able to help. Nothing wrong (IMO) about taking the help you need from the PS system. I wouldn't feel the least bit guilty. We've utilized it ourselves with our oldest when she was still at home. Only way we could have gotten the help she needed. We've tried similar programs since but they haven't been for us. I try to never say never though, cause you just never know when you'll have to eat those words!
