Happy Hondadays? I Think Not!

Quote of the Day: Try not to become a man of succes, but rather try to become a man of value. -Albert Einstein

Is there anyone but me who resents those awful Honda commercials with the jingo, "Happy Honda Days?" It's bad enough that lots of businesses give us the generic "happy holidays," instead of the appropriate "merry Christmas," now Honda is too stingy to even give us that! It always makes me thankful that our vehicles are Dodges.

Here are some quotes by our 4-year old little boy, nicknamed Chim-Chim:

"I love you Grandma. Now give me half your doughnut."

"Getting your bones fixed. That's what a cemetery is for."

And speaking of quotations, the quote I cited on the 12th should have been attributed to Alfred Adler.

Our Thanksgiving was just immediate family (the relatives are all coming for Christmas this year instead) but it was wonderful: a fire in the fireplace, the traditional menu (turkey, green-bean casserole, cranberry sauce from a can, mashed potatoes with my mom's secret ingredient of celery-root added, cornbread, our own family's twist on tradition of homemade milkshakes for the drink, and pumpkin pie) and beautiful autumn weather. Truly a beautiful setting for the giving of thanks.

I watched the last half-hour of the Dr. Phil episode, "The Great School Debate" last night. I have mixed feelings. A "hatchet job," it wasn't. But biased against homeschooling, I have to agree that it was. I was proud of the unschoolers-- I wouldn't choose that method of homeschooling for my own kids, being a fan of structure myself-- but they held their own. I also thought that the young lady who feels that homeschooling made her "socially retarded" was interesting. Methinks she doth protest too much. Some people just have to complain! And by the way, how many more people are socially damaged by going to public schools? Dr. Phil conveniently didn't mention that. I hope it will be re-aired soon so I can catch the first half-hour which I missed...

Everyone remember to head over to Spunky's to read up on the "army of homeschoolers" (!!!) and the tribute to economist Milton Friedman...

My computer locked up shortly after I managed to save what I did of my blog entry "Occupational Therapy." To make a long story short, the therapist explained to us that my son doesn't use the muscles in his index finger and pinky to steady his hand so that the other three fingers can work properly together in tandem. She has assigned him exercises, such as kneading thera-putty, and picking up little objects with a gadget called an "olive retriever," as well as other fun exercies.

For cursive, she has us use a curriculum I like by Mary Benbow called "Loops and Other Groups." It is a kinesthetic approach-- muscle memory instead of brain-power-- approach to learning the letters that is far superior to some of the cheap cursive practice workbooks I had picked up before... I would recommend this program to anyone who's child has fine-motor issues...

What a cold morning! We're all staying indoors until the frost clears up and the sun warms up the world a little!
