Mr. Popper is a house painter and decorator. Mr. Popper, Mrs. Popper, Bill and Janie Popper, live on 432 Proudfoot Avenue in the pleasant little city of Stillwater. One day, when Mr. Popper came home from painting someone's house, he realized that day was his last day of work 'till spring! Later, that  evening Mr. Popper turned on the radio and heard Admiral Drake. The Admiral said Mr. Popper's name! Then he said, "... Watch for a surprise..."

Mr. Popper couldn't sleep at all that night, he was busy thinking of the surprise he had to watch for. The next morning Mr. Popper received a big box with air holes and it said on one side,"This side up." Mr. Popper opened it and out popped a penguin!

Mr. Popper's Penguins is a funny and cute book, the penguins are so funny! If you are an animal lover I recommend this book for you. If you have always wanted a penguin, I also recommend this book for you! Read this book it is so funny and cute!

Our Only May Amelia Book Review by Joy

Our Only May Amelia

By
Jennifer L. Holm

Published by
Scholastic Inc.

Copyright
1999

May Amelia Jackson is a twelve year old girl. The Finnish Jackson family lives on the Nasel in Washington state. May Amelia is the Jackson's only girl, in fact she is the only girl in the Nasel! She has seven brothers, well she has six brothers and one cousin that has lived with them for seven years.

May Amelia is not a "Proper Young Lady" she is... more like a boy than anything. May is very adventurous, she is always getting in trouble because she is so adventurous. May has so many adventures you can't even count them!

Wilbert is May's older brother, Wilbert is one year older than May. He is May's best friend and her favorite brother. Wilbert is always there for May, he is the best brother anyone could have!

I loved this book, Our Only May Amelia! The only thing I will warn you about is chapter nine,"What Happened On The Smith Island". Chapter nine is so sad, I almost cried. But like I said Wilbert will be there for May Amelia. I recommend, Our Only May Amelia to everyone who likes adventures. I loved this book so much, I think I will go read it a second time!

I found a nice, quiet place to read

my book, Our Only may Amelia.

Oh, NO they found me!

The Secret Garden Tea House and Mrs. Susan K. Marlow

For more Friday Show n Tell posts go to:

http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/Canadagirl

I am holding two of Mrs.
Susan K. Marlow's books
and standing in front of
The Secret Garden Tea
House. The house is a
beautiful Victorian
Mansion built in 1890,
so it is 118 years old.
The tea house is also
named The Herbert
Williams House and
is on the National
Historic Register.

The three of us, my mom, me
and Mrs. Susan Marlow. We
are ready for lunch!

Mrs. Marlow is signing the
last two books she has written.
This is the first time we met.

My mother took a picture of
our beautiful lunch. I had
apple pie tea with two cubes
of sugar. It was delicious.

Physical Science Lab Experiment: Greenhouse Effect Example 2.3

One teaspoon baking soda
in a zip lock bag.

Putting the teaspoon of baking
soda into a 2 liter bottle filled
1/3 of the way with vinegar and
2 teaspoons of baking soda
already in it.

I'm making sure that the zip
lock bag is sealed over the
bottle top.

Now, I'm just posing.

After I added everything and
put the bag on the liter bottle,
the vinegar and baking soda
reacted chemically and bubbles
started to form. The bubbles
pushed out the air and filled
the bag with carbon dioxide or
C02.

Then I put a thermometer in
the zip lock bag with CO2
in it and quickly closed the
bag and placed it on a sunny
window sill. I let it sit for 15
minutes.

Nothing happened!

The temperature was supposed
to rise significantly because the
sun was shining on the CO2 and
the C02 is supposed to absorbs
energy from the sun's infrared
light.

I also had a control zip lock of
just air and a thermometer. It
sat for 15 minutes and stayed
the same temperature on the
same window sill.  I did this
part of the experiment first.
The temperature was 80
degrees.

What went wrong?
1) I might have had the wrong type
of thermometer as I used a meat
thermometer and didn't have a
bulb thermometer as the experi-
ment suggested. The thermo-
meter does appear to work when we
set it in changed temperatures.

2) The C02 might have come out
of the bag. I tried to add the
thermometer quickly.

3) Was the sun not shining enough
here for the experiment to have
worked correctly?

I read what the science book said
about how the experiment was
supposed to work and why.

I received an A on my Physical Science
Test #2.

My Dad's New Job

Look at my dad's new job. Normally he works for
Boeing but since he's on strike he has picket duty
once a week. The rest of the week he stays home
doing work. I took this picture.

Painting My New Room: Lessons in Interior Design, Show n Tell Friday

For more Friday Show n Tell posts go to:

http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/Canadagirl

Me and my shadow painting
the corner of my room. This
is corn husk green on skylark
blue. I picked these colors.

My mom working hard on making
the paint look even.

My dad painting the window
sill and me working on the
corners. My dad taped the
window so the paint would
not get on it.
 My goofy brother who thinks
he's cool! Mom told him to
take pictures so he started
with a photo of himself. He was
helping paint too.

My brother took this picture too.
I had a lot of fun painting the
green.

This is the wall paper border
that will be covering the seam
between the blue and green.
Can you see, how the blue
sky goes with the blue sky
on the border and the green
goes with the grass below
the running horses?

The fun fact for the day:
Did you know Jesus painted
our house?  Our painter's
name is Jesus in Spanish.
But we call him 'Jesse'. We
laughed when we found
out his real name.

Andrea Carter and the San Francisco Smugglers: A Review

Andrea Carter and the San Francisco Smugglers
By Susan K. Marlow
www.susankmarlow.com
Published by Kregel Publications
Copyright 2008

Andi Carter and her family live in the San Joaquin Valley, California. It was
winter 1881, when twelve year old Andi is told that she will have to move to
San Francisco to live with her Aunt Rebecca. That meant Andi had to leave
all her friends, family, the ranch and her best friend, Taffy!

It all started on a Sunday morning during a church service. The levee broke
and water was running straight for the town! All the men went to work, but the
water flooded most of the town. School had to close for two months because
the schoolhouse had mud in it.

Mrs. Carter, Andi's mother, decided that Andrea will have to move in with her Aunt
Rebecca and go to Miss Whitaker's Academy for Young Ladies in San Francisco.
Andi was furious when
her mother told her! Andi didn't want to leave; she wanted
two whole months of no school.
But no, she had to go to San Francisco, and so
began a great adventure!

Andrea Carter and the San Francisco Smugglers is another amazing book
written by Susan K. Marlow. It is full of adventures; I couldn't stop reading it! I re-
commend Andrea Carter and the San Francisco Smugglers to every girl of any age.
You will like it; I know I did!

Six Quirky Things About Me Tag

My mom tagged me to do the Six Quirky Things About Me Tag.
If you want to know my mom's quirks go here: TroopersForChrist

Here are the rules:

Link to the person who tagged you.
Post the rules on your blog.
List 6 unspectacular quirks you have.
Tag 6 bloggers by linking to them.
Leave a comment on each blog to let them know they were tagged.

1) I guess I'm sort of like my mom, I talk to animals and sometimes in
a silly voice.

2) I like to play with my hair.

3) Whenever my mom reads to me, I always fall asleep.
Don't tell her I said that!

4) I like to eat sushi and dried seaweed. I like it when the dried
seaweed sticks to my  tongue and I have to peel it off!

5) I sleep with stuffed animals.

6) My favorite quirk of all, I can only do my writing assignments on
the day they are due but I get good grades on them.

I tagged these people: BookLover, 4sweetums, Gracie7, BeeBuddy

Smile! The herdsmanship judge is standing right next to me!!!
Pierce County 4-H earned all blues for herdsmanship! We did awesome!!

I am cleaning in front of my stall.

I wrote this on my tack box door, "Joy and Ima Performance 2008"
This is a tradition to sign the inside of the tack box each time a
4-Her attends the fair with their horse.

This is our family picture with Ima. Smile! My brother is not smiling!

My dad and I are cleaning out my stall so we can haul right on out of here!

Look at the pretty rainbow. My dad, mom and I sat in the
rain to watch little kids ride sheep. It was called "Mutton Bustin'"
and was funny to watch. We saw a man shoot out of a cannon
into a net as well.

Say 'good bye' to the Puyallup Fair. My brother doesn't want to leave!

Blue Willow Book Review by Joy

Blue Willow
By Doris Gates
Illustrated by: Paul Lantz
Published by:  The Viking Press
Copyright 1940

In the San Joaquin Valley lived a ten-year old girl with blonde hair
and pretty blue eyes, her name is Janey Larkin. The Larkin family
didn't have much, just the normal household items: a very wobbly
table, two chairs, a rusty iron bedstand, the mattress which was
rolled up on the bed and a rusty old stove. But the most important
possession they owned was the blue willow plate.

It may not sound like much, but to Janey the willow plate is a
solid rock in the midst of shifting sands. The plate holds generations
of happy memories and Mother Goose rhymes. Janey showed her
friend, Lupe the willow plate. Lupe did not understand Janey's
feelings for the plate. To Lupe it was just a plate with a picture on
it. But to Janey it was everything beautiful! The picture told a
story, a story Janey wished would happen to her.

Blue Willow is an amazing book. I liked it a lot! But will
you like it or love it? Find out by reading the book. I recommend
Blue Willow to any age girl; I liked it and you will too!

Reach for the Stars! Writing Workshop Lessons

These are my English writing lessons. I am doing lessons on the computer and I also have a paper copy of Mrs. Marlow's Reach for the Stars! Young Author's Fiction Workbook. Below, is the button/link for her blog for this workshop. I have just posted my first few lessons here.

Now, I have to go to the Reach for the Stars!  Writing Workshop Blog and post my blog post with Mr. Linky. That will tell Mrs. Marlow that I have completed my first few lessons and she will come comment on my work. Mrs. Marlow is an English Teacher and author of  The Circle C Adventures and this writing workbook.

 What about YOUR story?
Title of Book: Andrea Carter and the Family Secret
Main Character: Andrea Carter
Setting: Time: Fall 1880
Place: San Joaquin Valley, California
Problem the character faces: She finds out that she has another older sister.
The Plot: Andi  finds a half dead man in a creek, she lost her three cousins and
her horse ran away.
Solution: Can't remember exactly. The man is Andi's uncle by marriage. They are rescued.

A story I might like to write:
Title of Book: Hamster Stories
Main Character: Oreo, a hamster
Setting: Time: 2005 Summer Place:  A house in Washington
Problem the character faces: Changing from a human to a hamster
The Plot: Half the house catches fire; they are attacked by a spider; they
run our of food for a day.

Solution: The hamsters rescue each other. They fight the spider and they used the food they stored in their cheeks.

Characters:
Warm Up:
The name of a character I really like: Andi Carter
The name of a character I didn't like: T.J. Silver

My favorite character is Andi Carter (Andrea Carter and the Family Secret).  She is very horsey and very spirited. Andi is always doing something new and exciting.

The character I dislike is T.J. Silver from Andrea Carter and the Family Secret. T.J. is a very bad man and he kidnapped his kids and threatens to kill Andi. He is evil; evil I tell you!!

The New School Year Subjects

My subjects are:

Algebra 1, Teaching Textbooks

Reading: Blue Willow, Doris Gates

Spelling, Spelling Power

Grammar, Punctuation and Content:  Editor in Chief

Writing: Reach for the Stars, Susan Marlow

Typing: Keyboarding & Formatting, Microsoft Word 2000

Homeschool Blogger Blogging: Joy's Blog!

Physical Science

Old World History

My favorite subject is typing because it is very 'hands on'! The computer
program walks me through the lessons and it is very easy. The more
typing you do, the longer you can play the games. So it tricks me into
doing more lessons than I thought I would.

Of course, I do lots of riding and working with my two horses. I also
do other activities. For example, since today is September 11th, we
went to a Safety Fair in Olympia. It was very fun and my brother got
to talk to a SWAT team member.  I'd post pictures but Image Shack
isn't working for me right now.

Show n Tell Friday: My First Day of "School": Horse Lesson & Nature Trail Ride

My first day of school, at the arena.

My trainer looks like a midget in this picture.

My trainer's name is Mrs. Christine. She's telling
me to stop and back up and is getting us ready for the
Puyallup Fair. For 4-H it is the "State Fair".

After my lesson, my Mom, Snickers, Ima
and I went on a trail ride.
I'm eating a blackberry.

I have abandoned my horse, so I can eat
blackberries.

We spotted cedar tree seed cones.

A close up picture of cedar tree seed cones.

Lunch time! Blackberries!

Red mystery berries?  We can't find them
in the Plants of the Pacific Northwest
Coast book.

Lunch time for Ima. Horses like blackberries
too.

A thistle has gone to seed.

Salal "berries".

Group hug!

I have to stretch so I won't get poked by thorns.

Blackberries with a brown Ocean Spray flower.

Walking over a huge log.

Ima and I are posing.

Safety first! I must tie up the horses
before trailering!
