respect

Posted in Everyday Events
We are having some issues with respect here.  After the kids went to bed last night we were talking about some things that happened during the evening and realized we have gone to an easier form of parenting for us.  It is easier to let the kids go to Children's Church instead of sitting with us in church, it is easier to let them go to all the youth functions,  it is easier to say yes than to have to say no.

We let them know this morning that we will be going back to the old way.  No children's church and limited youth activites.  K was fine with the decision and let me know she supported us.  D was not happy and I had to point out that the attitude he was displaying at that moment was the reason we were making this decision.  A, R & M are disappointed to no longer be going to Children's Church but didn't complain.

It means more involvement for us and more work but I think in the end (when they become adults) we will be thankful we have made this decision.

trying again

Posted in Everyday Events
I am going to attempt to keep a journal again.

I am trying something new with school for K and D.  We will be doing blocks instead of all subjects everyday.  They will do history and literature everyday.  Math and one smaller subject will be on Monday and Wednesday while Science and another smaller subject will be on Tuesday and Thursday.  I hope they like this better than doing all the subjects everyday.  I think it will be easier.

I am also looking at getting up earlier than I have been.  Last winter I got up at 6:00 and my day went so much better.  I have been getting up at 7:00 this winter.  I need to get back to the 6:00 time.  I feel better about my day when I do it.  Now to just go to bed when I should.

I also have to get bank on track with my eating.  I have lost 50 pounds in total but I have about 75 more to go.  I have been off track since Mike and I got home from Charleston at the end of September.  I did great while we were gone and I have gone downhill since then.  I have gained about 7 pounds total.  I have to get it back together.  I want to reach my goal.

I also joined Flylady again today.  I will see how long it lasts.  It doesn't seem to usually last long for me but I would really like to try it again.

We are home from church today.  This is my 4th week home and I have to say that I rather enjoy the day off each week.  I have also had the past 2 weeks off since all but M have been gone at some point over the last 2 weeks. D, A and R went to Florida with my Mom and Dad and my brother's family for 10 days.  Overlapping them K flew to Florida to spend a week with my brother and sister-in-law.  And this weekend J, K and D are at a church function.  They come home today and then we are back to normal.

I did not do any school during the last 2 weeks while different ones were gone.  Instead I worked on decluttering and organizing the house and I got a lot done.  It looks really good. I still have little things to do but it looks so much better.

I guess today is my last push to try to get everything organized before we start school again.

Only 2 more co-op meetings and then our school time will be our own until the end of January.  As much as I love co-op I also like being the master of my own schedule.

I guess that updates everything for now.

A day at Home

Posted in Everyday Events
Thursday is suppose to be our family fun day but this week we have been gone more than we have been at home.  We traveled 2 hours from home on Monday and Wednesday to watch our oldest play basketball.  I love traveling and it was fun to do but we needed to stay home yesterday.

I was able to get control of the checkbook, work on our menu for next week, do some cleaning, have the dc do some cleaning, the mowing was finished and I made 3 decent meals.  I always feel relaxed and satisfied after working in the home.

My brother and his family came in to town from Tennessee yesterday so I spent the evening with my mom and sil working on scrapbooks at my mom's house.  I love working on scrapbooks (and was able to get 3 pages done!) but it was even more fun to catch up with my sil and be able to just sit and chat as a family.

It was a good ending to a good day.

A little backround to our routines for the summer

Posted in Everyday Events
I am going to spend this week blogging about our routines for the weekdays this summer.  I wanted to start with some of the preliminary thinking behind how I organized it.  I will share each day this week what that day's routine looks like.

On Monday and Tuesday we will be working at home.  The dc will do all of the chores on these 2 days that we normally spread over the week during the winter plus they will take care of the yard.  I have a list of projects I want to get done in the house this summer and I will be tackling those.  (I may post that list later.)  The dc will also each be working on a school subject for one hour in the afternoons.

We clean our church each week and that will be our focus on Wednesday mornings.  The afternoons will be spent finishing any house work from Monday and Tuesday and one hour on their school subject.  I will be using the afternoon as my office day.  In the evening we will get cleaned up and participate in either church services or community concerts we like going to.

Thursday's have been set aside as a fun day.  I may take the dc to a state park or to the pool or some other activity we might hear about.  It will be a nice day out of the house and away from the work we have been doing all week.  I also hope to incorporate nature walks in on these days.  The dc won't be doing their school subject on this day.

Friday is set aside for errands.  I will do my grocery shopping and any errands that need to be done.  We will also go to the library every couple of  weeks.  In the afternoon we will do a quick clean-up so the house is ready for the weekend and the dc will spend another hour on their school subject if they have slacked off earlier in the week.

I realize we will never be able to stick with this completely but at least we have something to shoot for.

Getting up early

Posted in Everyday Events
In the past I was always a late to bed late to rise kind of gal.  It was not uncommon for me to then be in my pjs until nearly lunch time.  When I started schooling the dc I can remember being on the phone with a friend and commenting that I needed to get off and get dressed then do school so my dc didn't remember me always being in pjs.  This comment seemed to awaken me to the need to dress earlier on a regluar basis.  I don't think my older dc remember me spending half my day in my pjs.

The late to bed and late to rise habit did not change.  I always required about 8-9 hours of sleep and very rarely did we go to bed before 11:30 and more often it was 12:30-1:00.   Getting my 8-9 hours in meant that I didn't get up until about 9:00 or after.

Off and on I have read how getting up earlier would make for a better day.  I have tried and failed many times.  In the last year or so I have been more committed to trying it and my body clock seems to finally be adjusting.   I also don't seem to need as much sleep as I always thought I did.  I have been getting up at 6:00 pretty consistently for a few months now.  I am amazed how much I get done in a day and how much smoother the day is when I have gotten up early.

The other part in having a good day seems to be doing the first 5 things on my list when I have said they should be done.  The rest of the schedule can go by the wayside but if I do those 5 things done on time the day still goes smoothly.

Those 5 things are:

1) getting out of bed at 6:00
2) showering first
3) starting my quiet time by 6:30
4) spending only 30 minutes on the computer
5) waking the dc at 8:00

I am back

Posted in Everyday Events
After the upgrade of the homeschool blogger I went out of town and then was busy moving some things around in our house.  I knew I could not log on but I never took the time to figure out why.  This afternoon I took care of it and now I can post again.

It didn't really matter that I couldn't log on because I haven't had much to say.  I am not  able to make my daily life sound interesting so I usually wait until...I guess the mood strikes to write about something.  So until the mood strikes...

A new perspective

Posted in Everyday Events
It seems the Lord has been changing my thinking on some things over the past year.   I never thought my thinking on these things would change because I felt they were a part of who I was.  As I see these changes happening in me I am sure of where they are coming from.  I was okay with where I was but apparently the Lord wasn't.

I have always liked darkness.  I like dark rainy days.  I don't like the lights on in the house until I can't see what I am doing any more.  I love the winter because there is more darkness than light.  For some reason darkness seemed comforting and relaxing.

I am not big on going outside, especially in the winter.  I love the look of the outside in the winter but I don't really want to go out and play in it.  I don't venture out in the summer much either.  Rarely do I go outside with my dc.  I don't like working with the flowers or gardening much because I don't want to be outside, in the sun, getting sweaty and dirty.

Another thing I never thought would change is my dislike for going to Florida and being at the beach.  I would have rather gone to Michigan in the winter or to the mountains.  I would have enjoyed sitting by a fire drinking hot chocolate instead of sitting on the beach and being sticky and sandy.

For some reason over the past year I have seen my thinking change on all of these things.

I have turned the lights on more often this winter and am actually enjoying it.  I love the sunny days and feel so much more alive and awake on those days.  The dark damp days are affecting me more this winter than they usually are.

I have enjoyed going out more.  I love the fresh air and how I feel when I am out.  I love looking at all that God has made and want to be out in it.  I spent a lot of time on my porch swing this past summer which is something I never would have done before.  I also enjoyed working in my flower bed the entire summer and am very excited about having a garden again this year.

I have also desired to go to Florida.  I want to be in the water, on the beach, feel the breeze...We had to go to Florida for my husband's grandma's funeral in November and I made sure we got to the beach.  It was only for 15 minutes on the day we flew home but I felt so refreshed.  I even have a picture of that day on my desktop.  Ask my family and they will tell you this is a total turn around.

It seems that as I have grown closer to the Lord He has changed my perspective on these things.  I never intended to change these things and truly felt they were who I was.  It has been fascinating to see what the Lord is doing in my life with areas I am not even asking Him to work in.  Imagine what He can do when I ask for changes.  He truly is an awesome God!!

Feeling better

Posted in Everyday Events
We are finally recovering from our illness.  What a long week it has been.  Sickness is not a fun break.

I did hand out the assignment sheets on Tuesday and let them do what they could around naps.

On Tuesday and Wednesday I spent almost the entire day working on scrapbooks.  I do Creative Memory Scrapbooks for each of the children plus a family one.  I had not worked on them for about 4 years so I was way over due.  I was able to get our oldest caught up to the point I wanted to stop at.  Now I am working on the second oldest.  I have so much fun doing them.

Today we got back into the swing of things with school.  They are trying to get caught up and I am trying to get the house back into shape.  I think it will take more than what my weak body can handle today though.  I may have to spend the afternoon scrapbooking to recover from my cleaning this morning.  :)

Sickness

Posted in Everyday Events
I don't get sick very often but I am right now.  As a matter of fact all but one are sick.  D started on Friday evening.  My husband started on Saturday and on Sunday the rest of us went down one by one.

I woke up yesterday morning not feeling well at all but had to pick up my co-op order.  When I got home I had to debone a turkey I made last week.  By then it was 2:00 and I couldn't do another thing.  I laid down in my favorite lazy boy and slept off and on until 9:00pm.  I watched a little TV and went to bed at 11:00.

I slept well until 4:00 when our youngest daughter cried out on the couch she was sleeping on.  She had a bad dream.  I sat with her under a big comforter she was using until 5:30 when our youngest joined me.  At 6:00 my husband left to work to we all loaded into our bed.  At 7:00 the youngest wet my bed.  So I was up again and changed him threw a towel down and we crawled back in.  I ended up sleeping until after 9:00 this morning.

I am still not feeling great with the head cold but my fever is down to 99 after being around 102 most of yesterday.  I hope this is the end of sickness for us this winter.

Basketball awards night

Posted in Everyday Events
Two of our children played on the basketball teams that our church runs as an outreach ministry.

For our daughter this was a new experience.  She is a Freshman and has never played basketball before.  She really enjoyed the experience and we saw her grow through it.

Our son is only in 6th grade but he played on the Junior High team.  He didn't play a lot of minutes but he did enjoy the time he was able to play.  We found it better than going with the Upward league again this year for him.

Last night we had the awards banquet for them.  The boys Varsity, Junior Varsity and Junior High team as well as the girls team and cheerleaders were represented.  For each team all of the kids receive a trophy.  Here Daniel is holding the trophy he received while the rest of the boys look on.  (He is wearing a red and navy shirt.)

And here is Katelyn being introduced by her coach and about to receive her trophy.

After the general trophy they hand out 2 special trophies per team.  The first is the MVP award.  It is given to the person who has contributed the most to the team.  The second is the Shining Knight award.  Our team is called the Knights so it is a bit of a play on words.   This is given to the person who exhibits Christian character on the team.  They are an encourager and someone the others can go to.  Katelyn won that for the basketball team!  We are very proud of her.

Here she is receiving the Shining Knight award.  (She is wearing the green sweater.)

Valentine's Family Night 2/12

Posted in Everyday Events
Last night we had family night with a point.  We talked about unselfish love in celebration of Valentine's Day.  First we had them break into pairs and they had to mirror their partners.  This was to show them how they need to be focusing on the other person.

Next we sat in the dining room to eat our dinner and instead of feeding ourselves we had to feed each other.  Again we have to focus on each other.

We ended our time by reading I Cor. 13 together.

At the end of the evening we announced what we will be doing next Sunday so they have the week to prepare.  We will have an evening enjoying our own version of the Olympics.  This week they have to pick a country and come Sunday evening with a handmade flag and costume from their country.  We will start with the opening ceremonies, participate in several competitions and then they will receive their medals.  They are excited!

Today I turn 40

Posted in Everyday Events
I can't believe I am 40.  When my husband turned 40 it put me into a tail spin.  I questioned everything we were doing.  Was owning the business right, should he go back into the ministry, were we where God wanted us.... For nearly 2 years I had his mid-life crisis.  Finally he convinced me that we were where he wanted to be.

Now that I am turning 40 a little over 4 years later I have different thoughts.  I have always been sure that I am doing what I should be.  Raising and teaching our 6 children is the best job I could have.  Learning to be a help meet to Mike is where I should be.

The questioning for me has been more about if I am pleasing God.  I have been working through this for about 2 years but especially since I turned 39.  I knew that within the last year of my 30's I wanted to make pivotal changes.  I didn't want to enter the second half of my life where I was.  I wanted growth and I wanted to see lots of it by the time I was 40.

The first change I wanted to make was the visible one.  I wanted to lose at least 100 pounds.  The rest were more personal.  I wanted to be consistenly getting up in the mornings and having my quiet times.  I didn't want those quiet times to ever go back to clocking time in with God but to continuously be life changing.  I wanted to develop my prayer life from near non-existent concentrated time (I prayed some but always on the run) to more of my quiet time spent on prayer.  I also wanted to learn to use a prayer journal.

How have I done?  I guess I have done okay.

I have been pretty consistent with my quiet time although I slacked off some over the summer. I would say that most of the time what I am learning it life changing.  There is so much there to change that it isn't hard to find something that needs to be worked on.

My prayer life has gotten much better in the last couple of months.  I questioned many times on how to do a journal.  Two friends helped me out with that one.  One bought and sent me a journal, from Canada, and said "just do it" (thanks Rosanne)!  The other shared how she writes in her's and it seemed so simple and straightforward.  I realized from her that it didn't have to drawn out and flowery which is great since I am not a drawn out and flowery writer (thanks Brandy)!  I am seeing so much spiritual growth within me from spending that time every morning sitting before the Lord.

Now for the outward change.  I lost 23 pounds after my birthday last year.  Then I gained back 13 of it.  I started again last week and I am down 4 pounds!  I hope to stick with it this time.  I am leaning on the Lord to work in me for these changes instead of myself.  I spend a good amount of time praying about it each morning.  He has taken away another desire I had in the past couple of years that I thought would never change and really didn't even want to change but He did.  I know He can also take away the desire I have to overeat.

So it's on to the second half of my life and all that the Lord has in store for me.

Onward!

Being diligent

Posted in Everyday Events

For the past few months I have been struggling with not being able to get everything done.  First, it was working for my dh in the business.  I work from home but it was still taking most of my afternoons.  Then we started school.  Then our oldest daughter's basketball team started up and we run the team.  Then there was Christmas.  I just can't seem to get ahead and stay that way.

Once I become bogged down and my regular house chores are not getting done I give up.  I won't get it done anyway so why bother doing any of it.  Pretty soon I am sitting at the computer longer than I should be and ignoring all that I can.  I have cycled through this before but not to this extent.

Every once in a while I have a break through day or even a few days.  I get the house cleaned up.  I am on top of what needs to be done for the week and school is getting done.  Yesterday was one of those days.  The house was cleaned.  The laundry was done all day and is fairly caught up.  Meal were made.  School was done as it should be.  I spent the afternoon doing some prep work and relaxing with the dc instead of sitting on the computer.  A good day.

It is funny how being diligent in the work God has given me can energize me.  This morning I am actually excited about getting off the computer when my allotted time is up and getting the day going.   I need to do what I did yesterday, everyday.  I need to be diligent in the work the Lord has given me.

She has been caught!

Posted in Everyday Events

Our second oldest (a daughter) is a little slow in getting her school work done.  She always does it well but not quickly.  As she has entered high school the workload has increased and she doesn't always get it finished.  For a while now I have wondered if I am giving too much work or if it is her not staying focused.

Monday she came to me and asked if she could do something with a friend on Tuesday afternoon.  When she asked she was about 5 days behind on some subjects.  We discipline for not getting school done by taking away the use of one thing (TV, computer, phone, social activities..) each day they are behind.  They don't get them back until they are caught up.  She knew she couldn't do anything until all of her work was done.

On Tuesday morning she got right to it.  She managed to get everything caught up and do the work for that day. Imagine that!

This morning I told her my questioning was over.  I now know she can do the work I am assigning each day and I could probably assign a little more.  I am not sure she was thrilled with the new revelation.

Saturday evening our oldest had a basketball game about 45 minutes from home.  We got there early and decided to eat at Subway before the game.  When we pulled in to their parking lot the brake on the back wheel started making a very loud noise.  It was obvious, even to me, that the brakes were metal to metal.  Thank goodnees my parents were once again at this game.  We were able to get home after the game incident free.  Thank God!  It sounded funny only one time and tapping the brakes fixed it.  Apparently the brake pad broke and slipped down on the brake so it was getting caught.

While waiting for that van to be fixed we went back to the 12 passenger we were driving before we bought the nicer 15 passenger.  I took it this evening to drop different children at different practices and run to the library.  When we arrived at our final pick-up we unloaded to go in.  It is at our church and we wanted to use the facilities.

When we pulled in I debated on taking my purse in.  Since they were only going to be another 5 minutes I chose not to.  It took our 2nd son quite some time to get out of the van.   I looked back and he was messing with different doors. You would think I would begin to clue in about these things but I just told him to hurry.  Finally he came and as he approaches me he asks if I have my keys.  I told him I didn't and the smile quickly faded from his face.  He had locked the doors.

I told him it was okay because, if I remembered right, when you hit the power locks the side door no longer works. As I walked back to the van it hit me he had been messing with that door.  He concured that yes he had manually locked that door.  Then I remember that we keep a key on the outside of the van.  I look and nope, it isn't there.

We got inside the church and I called my husband who is 45 minutes away at a game for our oldest dd.  Again, thankfully, my parents are there (do you think they are thankful at this point?).  They agree to bring her home and my dh takes off to save us.  Five minutes later he calls and asks me to call the police to see if they will open it for me.  The next town over won't do that any more so I had my doubts. I called and the 911 operator told me they will.  I call my dh and he turns around and heads back to the game.  I headed outside with the child who got us where we were.

When we got outside I explained to the child that he was going to need to be there to help the policeman if he needed it and to say thank you when he was done.  A few minutes later the policeman arrives.  My ds held the flashlight for him and he got it opened.  Our ds definitely thanked him.  I ran back in to get the rest of the dc and we headed home.

I truly hope this is the end of our vehicle woes.
