One Big Family

White walls

So many grubby little hands, so little time!

My kids are just the normal type; always creating and touching and getting dirty. When they walk down the hallway or up the stairs, they leave behind enough evidence to keep CSI busy for a century!

When I was a young lady I visited with a family that had a strange ritual; they washed their walls and light fixtures once a week.  I remember it distinctly because my dear friend scowled at having to do this chore before we could spend time together. This made a big impression on me.

Since the beginning of my family I have made this part of our family life as well. I make it a point to periodically clean doors, door jams, bannisters, light fixtures and walls. It is amazing how this changes the appearance of a house, and how good it makes you feel!

Of course, it is a lot easier if you paint your walls with semi-gloss instead of flat latex--which is next to impossible to keep up.

A few tips:

"magic erasers"--a must for cleaning off those marks that won't come off any other way.

baking soda--will do if the eraser won't work at all

touch-up paint--keep some spackle, some paint, and a paint brush on hand for those little mishaps that can become eyesores.

"Kilz"--a paint primer that is very useful for those things that just won't come off at all, and will bleed through paint

nice to know I'm not the only "anal"(lol) one about light fixtures and walls. With this many children it really doesn't take long at all. And gotta add the dining table legs and chairs too ;-)

We're working on re-doing our walls right now!

I'm not sure how all those little finger prints end up there...but boy, they multiply before you know it!

Thanks for all the tips! They'll come in handy. I used to wash walls when I was younger with my mom.. I never understood why she'd wash the WALLS..but after they were all clean you can definitely tell a difference. Great ideas =)

Thanks for the reminder that I really need to wash the walls. I know how much it can improve the appearance of your house, it just seems that it's a job that gets pushed aside in favor of other, more important jobs. Thanks for the reminder that I need to get a scrubbin'!

I love Mr. Clean Magic Eraser!! I love it on the grout to my ceramic tile floors!! It works great!! We have to very active boys who rarely wear shoes out to the back yard, so my floors take a beating everyday. We have white trim and doors so we are always wiping. Nice to know I'm not the only one.
