• Sep. 23, 2008 - Devotions- A HARD thing

Personal Devotions are hard things, lets face it. It is hard to stay consistent to find a time each day to spend even just a couple minutes in God's Word and to pray. "Reading the Bible in a Year" goals are similarly hard. We always start out fresh, inspired, and ready to challenge ourselves to stick to a devotions schedule or read the Bible in like 90 days!, but then what happens? Our busy, hectic lives cause us to stumble, to miss a day of reading, and make us get off track. Then we tell ourselves, "oh well, I guess I can't continue since I'm off track". Well, in Revelations 2:3 Paul commends the church in Ephesus- "You have persevered and have endured hardships for my(Jesus) name, and have not grown weary." Matthew 6:24- "No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon" This verse perfectly illustrates how we cannot let ourselves give in to worldly things, instead of being consistent with our Bible studies. It is impossible for Christian growth without spending time with God and learning more about him by reading his word. So here are some questions for you: Do you think that you spend enough time with God each day? Can you relate to any of the above? Do you think consistency is a important factor in personal devotions? Any verses you want to share to back up your opinions would be great. And please, don't hesistate to tell me if you disagree with any of this. God bless, Arya

Yes, consistency in the Word and personal devotions is important. The Bible verse that comes to mind is-1 Thessalonians 5:17--pray continually. Although this has to do with the topic of prayer, it also has to do with consistency. I get entangled with school, everyday life, and priorities. Of course, if you would think that if you prioritize your day, it won't conflict with anything else but it does sometimes. Sometimes you have to bump something up in the schedule to make room for something. I at 5:10 Zulu (5:10 A.M. for the civilians) get up and get ready for the day. After that I have my morning devotions. God bless,

Matt

Hello again......

I have not a lot of time for actually reading the Bible until this start of the school year, because I just haven't thought of it, but now I do because the school I'm signed up with requires that I have to read a couple chapters a week..... anyway, up to now I haven't given it a lot of thought, and now I feel guilty, I pray daily, but I could of done better with reading......

Anyhoo, I'm glad that this was brought up! :)

God Bless,
Sylvia

It is difficult to maitain daily devotionals. Our sinful natures say stuff like, "We can do it later, we have to do something else at the moment."

I try to pray every night before I go to bed. I hope it gets me closer to God. Now, I get to where I feel guilty if I miss those prayers and my morning devotion. Praying brings us closer to Him and if we need help with remembering devotions, we should talk with God and ask him to help us remember! :)

Cool, I just wrote down that verse the other day!

Yeh, I agree with you, its very hard to "make" time. But I make sure I do it every night before music, other reading and..sleep. I find that I rest better and am more ready for the next day.
