Discussions with a Purpose

• Sep. 23, 2008 - Serving Others......at Home!

The following post, I posted a while back on my main blog. I thought it would make for a good discussion so here it is: Lately I've been feeling convicted to serve at home more. For a while now every Tuesday, Wednseday, and Sunday I care more about my appearance than other days, because we always have events on those days for which I like to try and look nice. One day I started thinking about how I should serve my family more and began thinking of all kinds of ways I could do this. A thought struck me that I shouldn't be so much more concerned about my appearance when we have events outside the home, but try to look nice for my family as well. We are commanded to serve others and our family should be on top of the list of people to serve. This fact reminds me that I should care more about what I wear at home, then what I even wear outside the home, and how I present myself to the family. This said, it is not only in appearance that we can serve, but in our actions. You can make your mom's day by straightening out the downstairs for her, vaccuming a room, or even something like setting the table, without her asking you to do it first. Maybe taking over a chore for a sibling to help them out, or washing the car for your dad. These are all just examples of ways that we can be blessings to our families. Once we conquer the goal to serve our family, it will be much easier to serve others and think of ways to serve them. Here are some verses encouraging us to serve others: Proverbs 11:24 One man gives(serves) freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. Proverbs 11:27 He who seeks good finds goodwill, but evil comes to him who searches for it. Proverbs 16:3 Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and your plans will succeed. Exodus 20:12 Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you. Mark 12:29 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'[c]There is no commandment greater than these." Do you agree with this? Any ideas on how to serve our family (and friends) more? What do you like to do to help your family and encourage them? God bless, Arya

The idea of looking nice for your family is a great one. We need to be as an example to our younger siblings. Something that comes to mind is say your sibling/s needs their bed done, do it for them in secret and don't tell them that you did it. Say your mom your mom hasn't done the dishes yet, do them with out her asking you to.

Philippians 2:14 -- Do all things without (A)grumbling or disputing;

1 Corinthians 10:31 -- Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

Of course we should dress to look good for your family but we should ultimately to it to the glory of God.

What we dress in tells others about you.

God bless,

Matthew

I also have been thinking about that. I tended to look better when I went out then when I stayed at home,I didn't look bad,but when I went out everyone knew because I looked better lol..I have decided to change that. I want to have a all around neat, pretty appearance so I dress nicely everyday. As for chores and helping around the house. I am kind of overly helpful,but that is just my demeanor. It is very important to help around the house.

Hi,
This is great blog. I'm glad that something like this is being posted.

I've personally been convicted that I need to serve my family more. I tend to focus so much on my own needs that sometimes so much that I don't notice what others need. A couple of verses that have helped me are Phil. 2:3-4.

Looking forward to reading more!

Great post!
I try to just spend time with my siblings, its hard,of course, we have our arguments. But we always manage to be back together in the end.
I'm just now learning to ask my mom if she needs help, even if it looks like she has it under control. she's always happy to have a helping hand.
