• Sep. 28, 2008 - Fireproof- Movie Review by Phoenixflames
| "Fireproof" A Review For background info on this movie, contact Miss Arya I went to see "Fireproof" expecting to be thoroughly disgusted. Generally, I dislike blatently Christian movies. They tend to have bad theology and hurt the Christian message, but this movie was entirely different. (From here on out, spoilers abound) I'll start with the bad stuff. Our hero (or antihero), Caleb, is a seriously non-Christian fellow in the first part of the film. He screams at his wife and gets in her face while doing so. He smashes a trashcan and computer with a baseball bat outside their home (the computer thing is good, though, more on that later). He is addicted to trash on the internet, which is the main problem in their marriage. He also cares more about a boat that he wants than his wife. Other things that are less than wholesome (all issues are addressed in the film), there is a braggart at the fire station who finds out the hard way that he is not "the man." very very funny. A married doctor tries to woo Caleb's wife, Catherine, while she is still married. The "good" doctor also takes credit for things he didn't do, and leads Catherine to believe that he was single. Catherine is also cruel in her speech to Caleb many times, as Caleb is to his mother. Now, for the great stuff. Caleb's parents are Christians who pray for their son and his wife constantly and his dad shares the gospel truth with Caleb every chance he gets. He also encourages Caleb to try to save his marriage. Finally, midway through the movie, Caleb accepts that he needs Jesus to save him and his marriage. Enter the computer and the baseball bat, Caleb is looking at boats when an ad pops up that is suggesting exactly what he is trying to avoid. After a struggle, He takes his computer outside and destroys it with a baseball bat. He then put roses and a lovely note to his wife where the computer was. Some other good things. Caleb's best friend is also Christian and has an ideal if unrealistic marriage (think, I love you, no I love more, no I love you more), but his friend also witnesses to Caleb and the other firemen, and is very funny. Once Caleb realized the boat was hurting his marriage, he goes and uses the $24,000 he saved up for it to go buy a much-needed wheelchair and hospital bed for Catherine's mother, a stroke victim. It ultimately brings her back to him and, more importantly, to Christ. In addition, Caleb cares for Catherine when she is sick. He and other firemen are shown risking their lives to saves others. Finally, when he finds out it was his mother who did the Love Dare to his father, he runs to her and apologizes for every mean thing he ever said to her. This was good movie. The theology was sound and the message, while a little over the top, was presented well. The acting wasn't the greatest, but the plot was good. It was clean, tasteful, and God-honoring film. -Phoenixflames NOTE- Fireproof was FOURTH at the Top Box Office this week! Isn't that cool! God bless, Arya |
