• Oct. 3, 2008 - "Keep the Sabbath Day Holy"

8 "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. 11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. What does this verse mean to you? How do you define "keeping the Sabbath day holy"? Arya

Great Discussion!

We have this discussion a lot at our small church. I believe if you are doing work it should be glorifying to the Lord, not just because it is a Sunday and you have a few hours to yourself. It drives my family crazy when everyone in our neighborhood is out and about doing things instead of spending time with their families and resting in the Lord.

Thanks again for this discussion!

Have a Great Day!

i think that keeping the Sabbath day holy doesn't mean sitting around doing nothing!! because remember Jesus got in trouble with the Pharisees because he healed on the Sabbath Day!! i think you should keep the Sabbath Day Holy by just simply going to church!! because you shouldn't act any different than you do during the week because you should be acting like God during the week also!! so that's how i feel about that and i was wondering if i could put this on my blog also?

Refrain from sin (which we should do all the time) and use the time otherwise spent living hurriedly for praising God!
Thanks for the offer; my Dad just got out of the hospital, we would love prayer for him; Mom's got a cough and a cold that's going around; I would love prayer that my cottage crocheting business would get off the ground!
Thanks for notifying me on every update,

My pastor at our previous church believed that going out to eat on a Sunday was wrong because it encouraged buisnesses and restaurants to be open and the Bible tells us to rest on the Sabbath. What do you all think about this?

Wow, that's an interesting thought. I've never really thought about it like that before. I always thought it was great to see families going out to eat on Sundays, since it meant they were spending time with each other that they wouldn't normally spend during the week.

I have mixed feelings about it. We should keep it holy, to the extent that we can and out of respect for the Lord. There are those that have to work on the Sabbath like the police, firemen, EMTs, paramedics, etc. I remember that Sunday, that to me would fall under my mixed feelings.

I know many people debate this matter, but my personal views are, to keep the Sabbith day holy is to devote a whole day to God. Even if we are unable to make it to church, though this is the best way to glorify Him, with others, we can dwell upon Him. He does so much for us, it is the lest we can do to devote a day to Him!

Our family celebrate Shabbat with a "feast" every friday(saturday is our "sunday")
We all sing "Its Good To Thank The Lord" and eat and fellowship.
On Saturday we listen to a sermon and spend time with eachother(which is a treat, my dad is so busy)
I believe that Shabbat means taking a day, out of seven, and devoting it as rest and worship.

This one's a toughie... But it does need to be discussed. But you also need to keep in mind that different religions have different views, and so do different people.

Personally, I think it's fine to work on a Sunday. About a month ago, my S.S. class had a care group at our church and we cleaned out two dirty storage closets.

So... Like I said before, it depends on the person. Jesus "worked" on a Sunday, though... He healed someone, right?? Then the pharisees got all mad at him, saying that he wasn't obeying the law. But it was His law... ?? Thoughts??

Your right Renee, it does depend on the person and their denomination most likely, maybe not as much their "religion".

Do you think infant baptism vs. voluntary baptism would be veering a little too much to the controversial side?

TO THE ORIGINAL QUESTION.

ISAIAH DEFINES IT LIKE THIS:

Isa 58:13 If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, [from] doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking [thine own] words:

TO OTHER COMMENTS: SUNDAY IS NOT THE SABBATH DAY.

THE SABBATH IS THE SEVENTH DAY. SUNDAY IS THE FIRST DAY.
