Place: Bettendorf library, upstairs in the Bettendorf Room
Date: Saturday, April 24, 2010
Time: 10 AM-12 PM
Each student will get a table (about 5 ft. by 2 ft.)to set up his project. It would be nice if each display had a tri-fold board because that would help define each person's area, but that won't be required to participate.Displays can be about anything: the solar system, tadpoles, butterflies, Einstein, Mozart, horses, ancient Egypt, the arctic, germs, weather, mythology, geometry, et cetera, et cetera!
Anything you are studying or will be studying or have been studying...
it is all fair game. This is a general project fair, not limited to any specific subject.
If those aren't enough ideas, here are some general topics that could be used for the displays:
Biographical study
Historical period
Scientists
Inventions
Science fair type project
Artwork
Literature
Geographical study
Math concepts
Phonics or early reading projects
Foreign language project
Please register with the family name and number of students participating by sending an e-mail to Stacey Clark, stacey@buick455.com
Although I don't need to know the topics, students should begin thinking about what their displays will contain soon so they will have plenty of time to plan.Tri-fold boards can be homemade or purchased inexpensively from Walmart or other stores.
The room has a capacity of 230, so- the more the merrier!Invite the grandparents and family friends.I look forward to meeting you, applauding our children's good work, and being inspired by all the creative and interesting projects.
This post came from the Iowa City homeschool e-group. Thanks to Julie.

MICHAEL FARRIS, A FOUNDER OF HOME SCHOOL LEGAL DEFENSE ASSOCIATION AND PATRICK HENRY COLLEGE, ANNOUNCES SUPPORT FOR VANDER PLAATS
PURCELLVILLE, Virginia – Michael Farris, a national leader in home-school education and the founder of Patrick Henry College, today announced his support for Bob Vander Plaats in the 2010 Iowa gubernatorial contest.
“Bob is a leader who really understands the core principles of liberty that were purchased at such a great price by our Founding Fathers. Government is here to protect our liberty not to grant our every whimsical wish only to be paid for by the next generation through massive debts,”
Farris said today in a prepared statement. “Bob is a man of conviction, candor and compassion. He will make a great governor.”
Farris, who earned his law degree at Gonzaga University School of Law, founded the Home School Legal Defense Association in 1983 and continues to serve as its chairman and general counsel. Through his efforts, the HSLDA has secured a number of court rulings and policy changes favoring home schooling.
His cases as lead counsel include over 40 reported decisions by the U.S. Supreme court, five U.S. circuit courts of Appeal, seven state Supreme Courts, and five state Courts of Appeal. Farris successfully argued for the petitioner in a religious freedom case, the Supreme Court case Witters v. Washington Department of Services for the Blind in 1985-86. Education Week named Farris one of the most significant 100 "Faces of the Century."
In 2000, the ordained Baptist minister founded Patrick Henry College as “a Christian institution with the mission of training students through a classical liberal arts curriculum and apprenticeship methodology to impact the world for Christ and for liberty.” Farris also founded Generation Joshua, an organization to mobilize Christian youth to participate in politics and get out the vote; ParentalRights.org, a parental rights advocacy group; and the Madison Project, which is a political action committee.
“Michael Farris is a servant leader and I’ve always called him a ‘real difference maker.’ Through his knowledge, faith and fearlessness, he has made a real difference in the lives of hundreds of thousands of people across the country and helped shape a force of young political leaders dedicated not to doing well for themselves but doing good for their fellow citizens,”
Vander Plaats said. “I saw firsthand the extraordinarily high regard in which Michael is held by so many people when he attended the Republican Party of Iowa’s 2007 Straw Poll event in Ames. Literally hundreds of people attended that event to see him and thank him for everything he’s done in defense of home school families throughout the nation. It is an honor to have the support of such an extraordinary man.”

Hi Everyone - Hope you are all working or finished with your CPI form. Remember, this year all CPI forms all over the state have to be submitted to the local school district by August 26thNOT before the first day of school in your district as previous.
Forms can be downloaded in PDF format at www.the-niche.org or at HSLDA if you are a member. If you want a form you can fill out on your computer, email me at kidsrus @ louisacomm.net (remove the spaces) and I will send you the forms. I was unable to type into the PDF format, so I went to the trouble of retyping the forms for my own use, but I am willing to share,
One thing I think is very important is support and fellowship with other homeschool families. Please join a local homeschool group or start one if there isn't one around or that has a different philosophy than you. Homeschool support groups can be as simple as just meeting once a month to more active groups that have co-op classes, contests, etc. etc. NICHE will direct you to local groups in your area that you can check out and contact; you simply have to ask them for the information.
Remember - The law has changed slightly this year: AUGUST 26, 2009 in all districts throughout Iowa is when the form is due in to your local school district's office.
The form is available online at the following sites along with companion forms, explanations, etc.
If you would like a copy of the CPI form in WORD 97-2003 format (so you can type into it and save it filled out on your computer), email me and I will send it to you.

Is your home all ready to start school, if you haven't already?
Is your CPI form filled out and submitted? It needs to be submitted, according to NICHE, by the first day of school in the school district you are living in.
Did you get confused by the lead testing requirements or the dental/vision screening law? Don't be, The lead testing requirement ONLY applies to homeschoolers if you are filling out a CPI form for a child under the age of 6. Legally a CPI form is not required until the child is 7. There may be a few instances when someone would feel the need to fill out a CPI for the child younger than 6, but this would not be the normal. http://www.the-niche.org/Pages/faq.html#healthscreen gives the explaination step by step to determine if you need to do the lab testing.
And what about the dental and vision screening that was also passed by the legislature? There is a specific homeschool excemption in there so it does not affect homeschool kids at all.
Have you got all your curriculum? Need some last minute used curriculum from somewhere? Try the HSLDA used curriculum auction site at http://market.hslda.org/auction/xcAuction.asp. E-bay also always has used curriculum at http://www.ebay.com . Don't have time for an auction? Some of my favorite sites for used curriculum are Used Homeschool Curriculum at http://www.homeschoolclassifieds.com/. Vegsource has for sale boards at http://www.vegsource.com/homeschool/ . Do a google searach and you will find lots more. New curriculum may be the quickest curriculum you can find, and they are numerous and multiple. A google search will give you more than you want to check out.
Got to go mediate a "discussion" between two kids. Talk at ya later.

I have been searching the internet once again this year looking for where the CPI form can be printed off. I have so far been unable to find a form that is not in PDF format. Unless there's a trick I do not know about, I cannot fill out the PDF form on my computer and print it filled out. I try to keep things saved online as much as possible and, besides, my handwriting isn't all that legible even when I try. So for me personally, I really want it in Word format. When and if I find one, I'll submit a link to it.
The following links both download in PDF format only.
This first link is on NICHE. It is not restricted to member only.
