"Homeschool Family Day at the Capitol: Wednesday, February 13, 2008.
Mark your calendars and plan on the entire family attending this important
event -- NICHE is sponsoring a Homeschool Day at the Capitol on Feburary 13,
2008. We need a good turnout to imporess our legislators not only with our
numbers, but by our demeanor and interests as well. This affords each of us
an opportunity to model Christians, Christian families, and Christian
homeschoolers. By attending and participating, each family benefits not only
individually, but the overall, collective body of who we are and what we are
about, as well.
Fathers (patriarchs) are asked to take the lead in attending and representing
their repsective families, as the head and leader (Gen 18:19). Please
schedule a vacation day or make whatever arrangements necessary to attend with
your family if at all possible. Patriarchal involvement is a cornerstone of
the Christian family and we need to model and be the salt and light in our
culture (Matt. 5:13-16).
Over the last century, Christians have avoided involvement in politics and
government and the enemy has had a hey-day. As we examine our role as
Christian citizens, we should bear in mind some basic principles.
Discipleship is a life of obedience to Christ in every area of life, including
politics (Matt. 28:20). The substantially Christian character of early
America was, in part, the result of believers applying their faith to the
civil sphere. We must do the same today. A civil ruler is a minister of God
(Rom. 13:4). He lives in a world where Jesus is king (Matt. 28:18).
Christians must submit to and honor civil authorities as a part of their
allegiance to Christ as Lord (Rom. 13:1-7). Christians watch over civil
governments (1 Tim. 2:1-4; 1 Pet. 2:13-14), reminding them that God ordained
them to rule, protect, and keep order.
We need to promote the high test scores and low costs of education when
families homeschool, and also emphasize the students' multifaceted
achievements, social experience and model citizenship. As we show them the
success of homeschooling, we need to lobby for less state regulation and more
freedom to honor God's mandate to train up our children (Prov. 22:6). Pray
God will work in the hearts of the government officials to allow families to
homeschool freely.
Note that the capitol is a place of business, so proper attire and exemplary
behavior of participants of all ages and at all times is required. This is a
parent led event -- not a teen get-together. Please watch for a schedule of
events in the next newsletter and make appointments with your legistlators
well in advance. Please pray; ask for God's direction on how He can use you
specifically for homeschool freedoms and in general in our civil government."

classes can be reached by going to _http://www.desmoinesartcenter.org/_
(http://www.desmoinesartcenter.org/) , clicking on the education tab on the left , and
then on the fall 2007 brochure. They will not be offering classes only for

to find some families to use them. Nicole, at the art center, said that you
only need to put a few sentences about your needs on a form to get the

Calling all teens, ages 12 through high school to join the Homeschool Choir of the QCA for its 5th year. We especially need more male voices to make a great sound! No musical experience required, just a
willing spirit and a decent voice. The professional director, Dr. Page Grubb, is a male (that may help the guys decide to join) and he does an excellent job of directing and playing piano (he is an AWESOME pianist). Music is varied and will change for the second half of the school year. The range has been musicals to Disney, Chrismas season (but not carols) to Christian, patriotic to folk and more.
The choir will meet every-other week on Tuesdays from 2:30-3:3o in Bettendorf (easy I-74 access). The tentative schedule is starting on Sept. 11th and finishing the first sememster on Dec. 4 with an evening concert on Dec. 6th. We will start back on Jan.15th and end in April. (The dates are subject to Dr. Grubb's calendar with another job, but will be decided by next week.)
Tuition cost for the choir is $75 for the school year. A $25 down-payment is due by August 24th with the balance due the first session.
The students will sing at nursing homes or retirement centers during the last class of each semester. Concert attire is a plain white shirt and black pants or skirt.
Contact Sandy Kozol at sandykoz@netins.net for more information or the address to send the down-payment.
Please pass the word about this great-sounding group of singers!
Greetings everyone! Though we are ending one school year, Spring is
the
time of year when we sign up for the Fall choir session that we will
begin in September 2007. A discount applies to those who sign up
early.
Sign up now and pay later.
Anyone 5 years of age and older is welcome to participate in the
Homeschool Bell Choir. My name is Cathy Longoria and I direct the
Homeschool Bell Choir. This Fall we will begin our 3rd year of the
choir. It has been a wonderful success and very enjoyable! This is a
great beginning music class especially because it does not require
any
reading. The children play colored handbells along with pre-recorded
music. I hold up flashcards that designate when to ring certain
colors.
As the cards change, the bells that are ringing change. The kids ages
that have been in the choir range from 5 yrs. - 13 yrs. so far. We
currently have 21 students.
Following is a list of some of the songs we play: O Holy Night, We
Three Kings of Orient Are, Canon in D, Do Re Mi, Somewhere Over The
Rainbow, Jingle Bells, Will The Circle Be Unbroken?, Christ The Lord
is
Risen Today, Amazing Grace, Battle Hymn of the Republic, God Bless
America. We perform about 8 concerts per semester at various places
such as churches, retirement centers, nursing homes, Festival of
Trees,
etc.
Classes last 45 minutes from 3:15 pm - 4:00 pm. We meet generally
twice
a month on Tuesday afternoons currently. Our practices are held at
the
Ridgecrest Retirement Center on Northwest Blvd. in Davenport, Iowa.
Your child is not required to participate in every concert but rather
whatever your schedule will allow.
The fee is $25.00 per student for the entire school year. For those
who
sign up by July 1st, 2007 there will be a $5.00 discount offered per
student off of the $25.00 regular fee. Money does not have to be paid
until August 1, 2007. However, to receive the discount you must be
signed up before July 1st, 2007. Anyone signing up after July 1, 2007
will pay the regular fee of $25.00.
I also offer a fee per semester for those who may not be able to sign
up for the entire year or just want to try one semester. That fee is
$15.00 per student for one semester.
You may just visit a class, if you like, to see what it is all about.
Our next practice is this coming Tuesday, April 17th at 3:15 pm at
Ridgecrest Retirement Center. Our last two practices for this year
will be held May 8th and May 22nd at the same time and place. Let
your child participate during any of these practices and see if they
like it!
Please call me at 563-343-0531 for any questions or to sign up.
Thank you to all who have participated and support the choir. We hope
new members will join us and discover the fun that bells are!
Junior Theatre is offering a Homeschool Theatre Class. Tuesday 1:45 - 2:45. The session lasts 9 week and is $65.00. The classes are held at Annie Wittenmyer, cottage 15. If you are interested call Kathy at 1-563-888-2216.
Below is the information for the homeschool Bowling Days I've set up with Warrior Lanes (smoke free) in Waukee. Please be sure to read ALL information below including info about amenities & RSVP requirements. Since the facility can accommodate only 80 bowlers at once, RSVP's will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. See deadline for RSVP's below.
Please note that the manager has asked that I give her a "head count" 1 week before each bowling day so she knows about how many people to expect. We may not have to continue w/ this "head count" if the first few months are pretty consistent. However, she wants to be able to book another group or "walk ins" if there is a small homeschool turnout; but she doesn't want to overbook her facility if our turnout is large.
Thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation. If you have any questions, please contact me directly.
When: Generally the 4th Monday of the Month (please note any exceptions in the below schedule) 12:45 p.m. - 1:45 p.m. (approx. end time) (1 hour should allow for 2 games if 2-3 people are on a lane; if more people are on a lane, they may only have time for one game. Plan for more time if you want to bowl more than 1 game w/ a large group of people -- as long as lanes are available).
Where: Warrior Lanes (always a smoke-free bowling alley) 190 Laurel Ave., Waukee, IA 987-4840
(It is on the "main drag" into Waukee from Hickman Ave. heading west; heading west it is on the left side of the road in a strip mall. A few similar-looking strip malls will appear on the left before you reach the one where the bowling alley is located. If you pass through the lights at Warrior Rd., you've gone too far!)
Cost: $2.00/game/child; free shoes
*If they don't have your shoe size or if they run out of shoes, bowlers can wear their own WHITE-soled shoes ONLY. No other shoes will be allowed on the lanes. Also ----> NO SOCK or BARE FEET WILL BE ALLOWED for the safety of the bowlers!
Payment required at check-in time; Warrior Lanes accepts CASH, MC, VISA & DISCOVER
Bowlers: Any age (moms and dads, too) Maximum: 80 bowlers at a time
Amenities: 1) Bumpers are available (electronically-operated) for ANY bowler; and do not have to remain "up" for each bowler on that lane! The bumpers option can be chosen for a particular name on the alley roster.
2) Vending machines are available for your convenience.
3) Snack Bar available: If high traffic in the snack bar, the manager will staff the snack bar for us each time. If there is not high traffic in the snack bar (due to our using vending machines instead), she will not staff the snack bar during our bowling days. The manager will get an idea of our snack bar use at the first few bowling days.
FYI: There is a sign on the front door that prohibits outside FOOD & DRINK to enter the facility.
4) Warrior Lanes is ALWAYS a smoke-free bowling alley; no lingering smoke from league play, etc.
RSVP Requirements:
Please *RSVP* by *emailing* (or calling if you DO NOT have email capability) me the *number of people* * and names* you are signing up for *EACH **bowling day*. I need this information *1 week prior to the* * bowling day*. *Specify *(next to name)* if **bumpers are** desired.*
Having this information will enable me to submit the names (and bumper needs) to the manager so she can type in everyone's names on each lane's display board before we arrive. In this way, once the bowlers pay for their game, they simply find the lane with their name on it!
In theory, this is a nice feature that the manager has offered to do for us. However, it means names will be assigned to lanes at random. I realize that some of our kids will want to bowl with a friend, sibling, etc. Therefore, if submitting names becomes a hassle, I will simply ask that you email me the number of persons to attend. I will let you know if we change to that RSVP requirement.
Note: At the time of my confirming this information with the manager, she was flexible in our starting time (between 12:30 & 1:00 p.m.) as early afternoons on Mondays are their slowest time. I selected 12:45 p.m. as a happy medium. If a different starting time is more convenient for you, please let me know, and I will be happy to discuss it with the manager. In any event, I am sure they will be happy to accommodate late arrivals (approx. 1 p.m. or so) as long as 1) there is an open lane and 2) your expected ending time does not inconvenience another group's starting time.
*_HOMESCHOOL BOWLING DAYS SCHEDULE for 2006/07_:*
Monday, November 27 Monday, January 22 Monday, February 19 (this is the 3rd Monday of the month) Monday, March 26 Monday, April 23
* Due to my daughter's class schedule, it does not appear that we will be able to attend any of the 2007 bowling days. Therefore, if you have any questions for me you will need to contact me directly as opposed to catching me at bowling days in 2007!
