Plan to arrive between 9:30-9:50 to pick-up your tickets and proceed to the IMAX Theatre for this special showing of the IMAX film, Shackleton's Antarctic Adventure. Experience the extraordinary true story of polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton and his legendary British Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition in 1914-1916.   This expedition has become a larger-than-life testament to heroism and human endurance, with all 28 men surviving nearly two years in the barren, frigid Antarctic when their ship, Endurance, was caught in pack ice and eventually crushed. 

Make your way to the Exhibit Hall entrance to meet the Museum Naturalist for the educational program, Animals Among Us. You will get the opportunity to take a close look at LIVE animals!  After a discussion to identify the requirements of habitat found in the forest, prairies, and wetlands of our region,  smaller groups study turtles, snakes, frogs and salamanders and explore the connections between wildlife and habitat.  Each family will receive a "seek-and-find" worksheet that can be then be used in the Black Earth/Big River exhibit hall to reinforce program concepts.

We will reserve tables and chairs in the lunch area for home schooling families from 12:00-1:30 should your family wish to bring sack lunches.  You may return to the Exhibit Halls by showing your ticket to the attendant at the entrance.

EGYPTIAN ADVENTURE
Wednesday, October 17 12:30-2:30pm
Ages: 9 and Up

• 12:30pm-1:30pm:  Passport to Adventure: a series of activities staged in both the Egyptian Gallery and the special exhibition, B.J. & Mabel's Egyptian Adventure.
• 1:45pm-2:45pm: IMAX film, Mummies: Secrets of the Pharaohs
• Access to all Exhibit Halls until 5:00 p.m.

Pick-up your tickets and proceed to the Exhibit Hall entrance to meet your guide and activate your passport to begin your Egyptian adventure.  Completing challenges along your journey will earn stamps on your passport.  Learn about animals from Egypt, meet Isis Neferit, write your own name in hieroglyphics, and see authentic mummies and artifacts. This 45-minute program will conclude at 1:30, in time to prepare for the IMAX showing of Mummies: Secrets of the Pharaohs. 

Fee: $6.75/child ages 3 and up (student rate) and one adult at $6.75 for each child paid (chaperone rate). Additional adults $10.00 (group adult rate). The fee includes the IMAX film, educational program, and admission to all Exhibit Halls.

A few parents skate, many moms talk at the tables.
I've met families who homeschool independent, with CR-HSAP, or with
Marion HSAP.
There is also a pool table that charges 50 cents per game.  There is a
snack bar.

Junior Theatre is offering a Homeschool Theatre Class.  Tuesday 1:45 - 2:45.  The session lasts 9 week and is $65.00.      The classes are held at Annie Wittenmyer, cottage 15.      If you are interested  call Kathy at 1-563-888-2216.

Below is the information for the homeschool Bowling Days I've set up
with Warrior Lanes (smoke free) in Waukee.  Please be sure to read ALL
information below including info about amenities & RSVP requirements. 
Since the facility can accommodate only 80 bowlers at once, RSVP's will
be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.  See deadline for RSVP's
below.
 
Please note that the manager has asked that I give her a "head count" 1
week before each bowling day so she knows about how many people to
expect.  We may not have to continue w/ this "head count" if the first
few months are pretty consistent.  However, she wants to be able to book
another group or "walk ins" if there is a small homeschool turnout; but
she doesn't want to overbook her facility if our turnout is large.

What:        Monthly Homeschool Bowling Days
 
When:        Generally the 4th Monday of the Month (please note any
exceptions in the below schedule)
                  12:45 p.m. - 1:45 p.m. (approx. end time)
                   (1 hour should allow for 2 games if 2-3 people are on
a lane; if more people are on a lane, they may
                    only have time for one game.  Plan for more time if
you want to bowl more than 1 game w/ a large
                    group of people -- as long as lanes are available).

                    heading west it is on the left side of the road in a

Warrior Rd., you've gone too far!)
 
Cost:            $2.00/game/child; free shoes
 
                    *If they don't have your shoe size or if they run
out of shoes, bowlers can wear their own WHITE-soled
                    shoes ONLY.  No other shoes will be allowed on the
lanes.  Also ---->
                    NO SOCK or BARE FEET WILL BE ALLOWED for the safety
of the bowlers!
 
                    Payment required at check-in time; Warrior Lanes
accepts CASH, MC, VISA & DISCOVER
 
Bowlers:        Any age (moms and dads, too)
                    Maximum: 80 bowlers at a time
 
Amenities:
                    1)    Bumpers are available
(electronically-operated) for ANY bowler; and do not have to remain
                            "up" for each bowler on that lane!  The
bumpers option can be chosen for a particular name on the
                            alley roster.
 
                    2)    Vending machines are available for your
convenience.
 
                    3)     Snack Bar available:
                                If high traffic in the snack bar, the
manager will staff the snack bar for us each time.  If there is
                                not high traffic in the snack bar (due
to our using vending machines instead), she will not staff
                                the snack bar during our bowling days. 
The manager will get an idea of our snack bar use at the
                                first few bowling days.
  
                            FYI: There is a sign on the front door that
prohibits outside FOOD & DRINK to enter the facility.
 
                    4)    Warrior Lanes is ALWAYS a smoke-free bowling
alley; no lingering smoke from league play, etc.
 
RSVP Requirements:
 
                    Please *RSVP* by *emailing* (or calling if you DO
NOT have email capability) me the *number of people*
*                    and names* you are signing up for *EACH **bowling
day*.  I need this information *1 week prior to the*
*                    bowling day*.  *Specify *(next to name)*
if **bumpers are** desired.*
 
                    Having this information will enable me to submit the
names (and bumper needs) to the manager so she
                    can type in everyone's names on each lane's display
board before we arrive.  In this way, once the
                    bowlers pay for their game, they simply find the
lane with their name on it!
 
                    In theory, this is a nice feature that the manager
has offered to do for us. However, it means names will
                    be assigned to lanes at random.  I realize that some
of our kids will want to bowl with a friend, sibling,
                    etc.  Therefore, if submitting names becomes a
hassle, I will simply ask that you email me the number of
                    persons to attend.  I will let you know if we change
to that RSVP requirement.
 
Note:
                    At the time of my confirming this information with
the manager, she was flexible in our starting time
                    (between 12:30 & 1:00 p.m.) as early afternoons on
Mondays are their slowest time.  I selected
                    12:45 p.m. as a happy medium.  If a different
starting time is more convenient for you, please let me
                    know, and I will be happy to discuss it with the
manager.  In any event, I am sure they will be happy to
                    accommodate late arrivals (approx. 1 p.m. or so) as
long as 1) there is an open lane and 2) your
                    expected ending time does not inconvenience another
group's starting time.

Exploring Our Region's Native American History
Through artifacts and hands-on corn grinding activity, learn about the
native tribes of our area: the Fox, the Sauk and the Meskwaki.  Then visit
with Sacagawea and learn of her role in the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
This program includes a guided tour of Native American artifacts on display
in the Exhibit Halls.

Program developed for ages 8 and up.  Your program ticket includes access to
all Exhibit Halls including the special exhibitions, A Celebration of Birds
and Quad Cities Collects.  Exhibit Halls open 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Fee:  $4.00 per person ages 3 and up.  Current members:  $2 per person ages
3 and up.

Barry Stebbing's How Great Thou
Art classes.  Registration ends on Friday, October 19th.

We are so excited to bring Mr. Barry Stebbing and wife Sandra to the Omaha
Metro Area Homeschoolers. 

If you have put off registering for these exciting classes, do so now. We
have 40 seats available for the afternoon session.  1:00 pm to 3:30 pm, Oct.
23rd-Oct. 25th.  Three days worth of classes is $30.00 per student.  You
child will receive excellent instruction from Mr. and Mrs. Stebbing and
receive curriculum recommendations from their How Great Thou Art curriculum
line.

If you have homeschooling friends that live outside of our metro area,
please forward this information to them as well.  The afternoon class would
be perfect for folks who would have to travel an hour to get to these
classes.

*_Math Teams_*

 

These math teams are open to *any* home-schooled students in the area
who would like to learn and practice problem-solving techniques. They
are run using volunteer coaches and parent assistance.  Participation in
competitions will be encouraged but not required, and the scores of
those students who choose to compete will be kept confidential.  Classes
begin September 11 and run through March. There will be a mandatory
*parent meeting on September 11*.
All classes are held at the Marion Home School Assistance Program
building, 2301 3rd AVE, Marion Iowa.
 

*_MATH OLYMPIADS_* (*Grades 4-8*)

Students will learn to solve fun and interesting math problems.  Five
times a year there will be a five-problem contest, given in class. 
Awards will be given to high scorers on a national basis, but the
emphasis is on fun and learning, not on competition.

*3:45-4:45p.m. Mondays*

 

*_MATHCOUNTS_* (*Grades 6-9+* or any age in Algebra ½ or higher)

Students will enjoy learning to solve challenging math problems outside
the standard curriculum.  Students in grades 6-8 may participate in the
AMC-8 exam in November and the *MathCounts* competition in February. 
Students in upper grades may participate in competitions listed below. 
High scorers in all of these exams and competitions will have the
opportunity to advance to state and national level competitions.

*_GREAT PLAINS MATH LEAGUE (GPML)_* (*Grades 9-12*)

High school students interested in learning problem solving for state
and national competitions will meet once a week to study Great Plains
Math League and American Math Competition material.  Team members may
attend GPML competitions on Saturdays, at various locations around the
state, about eight times during the year.  Those who wish will also
participate in the AMC-10 and AMC-12 exams in February, advancing to
higher levels if qualified.  This class runs September through May.

Hello!
People are beginning to get excited about home school
basketball!  We are still working on the schedule so don't know for
sure about all the games.  We do have a junior high boys' coach who
would like to start having open gyms for high school and junior high
boys on Mondays, 7:00-9:00, starting this coming Monday!  They will
be held at the Countryside Christian Church.  Here are the directions:

DIRECTIONS TO COUNTRYSIDE CHRISTIAN CHURCH

Go East on I-5 from I-80, exit 4B (or from the Illinois Quad Cities).

Take Exit 2, Former IL 2.

Turn left at the stop sign and go just a little over 2.8 miles.  You
will see the Countryside Christian Church on the left.  It is lit up
and easily seen from the highway.  Turn left and there you are!

We have a good start on our boys' teams and would welcome any
home-schooled boys who would like to join us.  We are hoping to have
a girls' team too, so if your home schooled girls are interested,
