Birthday party

Posted in Parenting
Annika's 1st birthday party was Sunday evening.  Only Mom and Dad came since everyone else (aunts, uncles, grandmother) is either sick or recovering from surgery.  It was a nice "quiet" evening with just our immediate family.  Annika got a photo album, doll house, books, and some clothes from my parents.  We didn't get her anything since she's only 1 and we buy stuff for her as she needs it.

Christmas review

Posted in Parenting
This has been a good Christmas for the most part.  We had dinner with my parents on the 23rd and had fun watching the kids open their presents.  Eric got a bike with training wheels and a bell!!  Alec got a pedal tractor.  They now have more toys to ride on the driveway!  Annika got her 1st doll!

Christmas Eve we went to my grandmother's for appetizers and gifts for the kidlets.  Mom planned some fun games which made the evening a riot.  We laughed a lot and had tons of fun.  Our Christmas Eve service at church was good.  I loved worshipping with my church family!

Christmas morning we opened presents with just the 5 of us then went to West Virginia for more presents and food!  The kids were well-behaved in the van and at my aunt's house.  THANK YOU GOD!!

ACC Champions

Posted in Parenting
VIRGINIA TECH HOKIES are the new ACC Champions beating Boston College!  This was very much revenge for the Hokies after BC beating us in the last 2 minutes the last time we played them.  Now on to the Orange Bowl!!

GO HOKIES!!!!

Kidlet update

Posted in Parenting
Eric's thriving with our unschooling approach to homeschooling.  I'm not sure that I'm enjoying it because I don't have anything to compare his progress to.  But, for now it's the way to go.  He's able to add in his head (up to 10) and is learning about subtraction.  He's interested in money and is constantly asking me for help in counting his coins and bills.  There's not much interest in phonics or writing, but I'm trying to sneak it in!

Alec is SUCH a ham!!  He loves being the center of attention and putting on a show.  He's so attentive to Annika and wants to much to play with her, but she's not interested.  Most of the time he's following Eric around copying what he does/says.  There's some progress with his speech, but he's still not where most 2 1/2 year olds are.

Annika's growing big and learning new stuff all the time.  She crawls and cruises on furniture but isn't interested in walking on her own.  That will come soon enough I know!  She has 8 teeth and is working on her molars.  Today she ate some cheese I cut into pieces and some banana.  It's fun to watch her grow and be amazed by life!

We're back!

Posted in Parenting
We're back from the beach!  I didn't tell anyone we were leaving so no one would break in our house.  Not that any of you know where I live.  But I just wanted to be safe!

We went to Topsail Beach Oct. 30 - Nov. 3 and had a GREAT time.  My parents rented a house for the whole week and invited us to come for 1/2 the week.  My brother and his family were there the 1st 1/2 with us the 2nd 1/2.  We overlapped by a day which was nice - I was able to play with my adorable nephew, Henry.  He's getting a little sister in March!  I'm excited Annika will have a girl cousin to play with.  And if our baby's a girl then the 3 girls will be close in age.

The boys loved playing in the sand, but didn't care too much for the water.  Eric eventually decided to venture in with Daddy holding him.  Alec wasn't so brave.  Annika spent most of her time in the house with me or my mom.  I didn't want to clean sand out of her mouth!

The house was beautiful, the weather was perfect, and the company was GREAT!  The next time we go there will be 6 grandchildren instead of just 4.  You can see pictures on Annika's website.

Taking a break

Posted in Parenting
We're taking a break from school, at least til I'm past 12 weeks, but maybe longer.  I'm just too tired during rest time to do anything but lay in bed. And feeling sick to my stomach all the time doesn't help.  I'm taking advantage of teaching opportunities to reinforce what Eric already knows and to add to that knowledge.  We're not "doing school" as he calls it though.  There's not any workbook pages or formal "let's learn" time.  We're just reading A LOT and talking about stuff.

Annika's arrived!!

Posted in Parenting
The reason for the over 2 week break is that I delivered my little girl last week.  Annika Elizabeth was born Thursday, January 11 at 8:18am weighing 7 pounds, 12 ounces.  She is absolutely beautiful and the delight of my life!  Go to her blog to see more pics, but here's one to wet your appetite!

The boys seem to be pretty happy with her.  Eric doesn't want to hold her, but he coos at her and tells her how cute she is!  Alec likes to rub her head, especially when I'm nursing her.  So far, not much jealousy!!

I can't believe it's almost over!

Posted in Parenting
Yesterday was my last day of work at the pregnancy center as Nurse Manager.  I feel like I should be grieving, but I'm not.  I'm entering the next phase of my life....stay at home mommy!!    I stayed at home from Eric's birth in 2/02 until we moved to Virginia in 4/04 but I've worked 20-30 hours/week since then.  I'm kinda nervous about having 3 kids, staying home for the 1st time in almost 3 years, and keeping my sanity!

There's only 12 days until my scheduled c-section (January 11) and I'm getting anxious.  Not in a bad way though.  I just can't wait to meet Annika!  She's been growing and moving inside me for 38 weeks now and I want to see if my perceptions of her are accurate.  Will she look more like Eric or Alec?  Will she have blond hair or be the odd one out with dark hair?  Will ONE of my children look like me?!

On the schooling front I tried doing "school" with Eric today...clocks.  He had NO interest whatsoever in learning how to tell time.  He's been wanting to know how to tell what time it is, but today he was being silly and doing everything BUT answering my questions.  I'm wondering if I'm going about it all wrong or if today was just a bad day/time.  I'll try again Monday using the same lesson we did today.  Hopefully we'll make some headway at a different time of day (not right when he comes in from playing outside).

Need to be on top of things

Posted in Parenting
I started blogging because I enjoy keeping up with what's going on in other's lives and I wanted to keep y'all updated, but it's turned into me posting every month or so.  One of my New Year's resolutions (I know it's only November) is to blog once a week, at the least.  We'll see how that goes!

Since I last posted not a lot's happened in our household.  The boys have had colds the last week or two with Alec bearing the brunt of it now.  They got flu shots today, so I'm hoping there won't be a repeat of last year's 2 weeks of flu (Mike, then me, then Eric, then Alec) with Alec's being the easiest since he's the only one that got the vaccine last year.  I feel like I'm coming down with a cold so I stayed home from work today.  Once the Princess arrives I'll be home full time and I CAN'T WAIT!!!  Having to make decisions about whether I'm too sick to work or if the boys are too sick to go to the babysitter's makes me crazy!!

Eric's doing well with math.  There are times when he'd rather play, but eventually he decides he'd like to "do school".  And he's proud of the fact that he won't go to school like some of his friends.  He gets to "do school" now and whenever he wants to!  He is definitely an auditory learner!  On Monday I went over (for the 1st time) the days of the week in order.  I had him repeat after me a couple times.  Last night I said something about next Monday and he said, "Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday"!  I couldn't believe that he'd picked up the days of the week in order that quickly!!

Alec's learned a few new words: "titer" (Tigger), "woo" (what a dog says), and "ths" (this).  He'd been saying the sound "ths" for awhile, but is just now using it correctly.  He jabbers a lot and uses his hands when he talks, but it's not at all understandable.  I'm really enjoying seeing his personality come out.  He loves to be silly and is also a cuddler.

The Princess seems to be doing well.  The last US I had said she was about 4 pounds (at 30 weeks) so she's right on target for 6-7 pounds at birth.  I can tell she's running out of room, but she's still quite active.  There's only 8 more weeks til I get to meet her and cuddle her!   I'm going to have a shower at work in a couple weeks and then a shower at church after she arrives.  I really don't need any big items and I'll get mostly small sizes at the work shower so I'm not concerned about having one after she's here.  It will be more fun that way!!

A little off

Posted in Parenting
According to the US I'm due January 18, but I think the doctor didn't measure correctly so I'm actually due more like the 10th.  It's only a week's different I know, but it will matter when I'm getting close to delivery.  I'll have a 3rd c-section which is fine with me.  At this point I know what to expect with a c-section and how to speed up recovery...walk as much as I can, take pain meds, etc.  In my heart I'm hoping for a girl, but I'll be happy with a boy.  It would just be nice to have a little girl to "spoil"!

About Me

I'm a 34 year old mom from SW VA. These are just my thoughts as I teach my boys (currently 5 and 2) and girl (almost a year). I'm expecting baby #4 in June, 2008. As they grow I'm sure I'll have more to say that's worthwhile.
