Walking Therein

Visiting Family in Southern Indiana

I just found this as I searched old posts. It was saved as a draft, so I thought I would post it now anyway. It's from almost a year ago!!  It brings back fond memories and reminds me of how our children can learn anywhere, anytime.

Gena and Paulie just posted about their little vacation, and after seeing that puffer fish, I know they learned a few things! Or at least he will, if he takes my challenge to write a bit about it on his blog! I would like to know why that giant puffer fish was on the shore.

May 13 2006

We are back home again.  What a wonderful trip it was.  I mentioned a little about our trip in an earlier post, but it was really even better than we had hoped!

We started our little trek to Southern IN last Friday evening, May 5th.   We had originally planned to leave around 2pm, but then we were home long enough to say good-bye to Matt.  I was glad for that.  It was bad enough to go without him.

We ended up leaving around 5:30.  I kissed him goodbye, and we headed into town to pick up a few things and fill up our cups.  So, we probably got on the road closer to 6pm.  Just me - and our 7 children. And, I was looking forward to it!  Do you hear me? I was looking forward to taking our 7 children, ages 16, 15, 12, 8, 6, 2.5, 10m. on a week-long trip 200+ miles away.  The only thing I was not looking forward to was going without Matt.

Our children learned all sorts of things. They went fishing quite a bit. That means everyday for the first 4 days. I went along with them the first day, then stayed home with the 3 Littles the next few days.

Amanda helped Hannah fish. She caught 3 fish. They had to put the first one back, because it was small. The others were good size.

Jocelyn was the prime fish-catcher the first day. I think everyone tired of saying, Jocelyn caught another one! One was a 9in. blue gill.

Grandpa made sure to tell them all kinds of trivia and info about fishing and different types of fish. They did rather well for first timers!

Grandpa taught them how to filet the fish. We all sat out on the porch as he explained the how, where, and why. He told them he used his leftover fish parts in his garden. They are good nutrients to put in it.

Then he spent time with them, teaching them how to batter and fry the fish.

Jocelyn has a funny story about her and Amanda and their fishing lines.
Amanda posted about it, too... Don't go there, though, unless you have about 30m to read her extra-long post... just kidding. Actually, if you didn't used to read their blogs, they really are interesting posts about the fun  things they did!!!

They also made spaghetti dinner without using a jar of sauce, and I think they freaked Grandma Debbie out. She took them shopping, and they wanted her to get fresh tomatoes, garlic, lettuce, onion, tomato paste and spices instead. She said it was delicious. I think she was pleasantly surprised. They really enjoy cooking, and it is a great way they can bless others... especially me!

We spent the last 3 days listening to the Original London Version of Fiddler on the Roof - one of our all-time favorites!

In looking back over Jocelyn's post, it brought other things to memory of what we did and what they learned. I even copied Amanda's post to save for when I finally get around to scrapbooking it, because it was -so- detailed...:

We helped my Grandpa put up a cattlefence-tomato post for his garden. I learned a lot while we were there. I learned how to clean and fillet a fish, about why you soak your feet in salt water, how to do a fishing line, how to use a waffle maker, and many other things, Ican't think of. We also helped my Grt. Grandma move into her trailor and set up.

Lovin' our life out-here-on-our-little-farm,

Blessings!
-Jacque

Thanks for sharing your memories.

I have never heard of goats having fleas. Atleast I don't think that ours ever have. Now today my son brought in a tick.. ick!

Thanks for your post. I don’t know if you’re familiar with Maya & Miguel, a show on PBS in the afternoons -- http://pbskidsgo.org/mayaandmiguel -- that emphasizes cultural diversity and language learning but I’m reaching out to talk to parents about the program as part of a marketing project I’m working on with Scholastic.

I found your post and thought I’d reach out to say hello and ask if you’d like to receive a free Maya & Miguel DVD. If you’d like to receive the DVD just email me at Kerri at boldmouth.com with your address and I’ll have it shipped it out to you.

If you do choose to blog about Maya & Miguel show or episodes on the DVD, please make it clear how you received the information. Our goal is to be open and honest with everyone we reach.

Kerri Roberts, BoldMouth
