Petition to get Teacher's Edition Policy on Ebay changed

4:52 PM, Wednesday, May 24, 2006 .. Posted in Are you Wondering If You Should Homeschool .. 3 comments .. Link

I want to give you information for the petition to sign to let Ebay know you disagree with their policy on Teacher's Editions. They are listed under their Prohibited and Restricted Items page.

Their Policy is as follows:

Teacher’s editions of textbooks and solutions manuals that are intended solely for use by teachers are not permitted by eBay.

Items that are prohibited:

  • Solutions manuals for teachers, teacher(s) manuals, instructor manuals are prohibited

  • A hardcopy of a teacher’s edition of a math book

  • A PDF, TIF version of a teacher’s edition of a textbook

  • An eBook version of a Teacher’s manual on a CD-R

Items that are allowed:

  • Solutions manuals for students

More Information:

Teacher’s Edition textbooks are often clearly labeled as such but if you have any doubts, you should avoid selling the item on eBay. Teacher’s Edition textbooks often have special answer keys, exams, teaching tips, and guides to be solely utilized by the instructors of those courses.

They reason that: Teachers editions are intended for teacher’s use and eBay believes in limiting the resale of those items as we are not equipped to verify if the buyer is a teacher or not.

Their Prohibited and Restricted Items page also includes:

 "Academic Software:

Janel purchased an academic version of Microsoft Word from her school bookstore when she was a student. Now, two years after graduation, she wants to sell her copy of Microsoft Word. Unless she verifies with Microsoft that she is allowed to resell her software, she may not list her copy of Word on eBay because it violates eBay's academic software policy.

Tobacco

Drugs and Paraphernalia

Food

Certain Firearms, Weapons and Knives

Human Parts and Remains

Used Underwear

Their policy on Teacher's Editions clearly ignores the fact that cheaters are going to cheat, and they are punishing the honest people. I know Homeschool families depend on ebay to find such resources, and many also depend on the money from re-selling to get new resources.

I would also like to add a comment made on the Petition, by #12. Lisa Armstrong  :

"TEs are routinely sold to ANYONE through the publishers, their resale is not illegal, many public school teachers buy these books, homeschoolers depend on these books.  eBay should remain 'just a venue'."

The petition can be found at:

http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/te4sale

Please sign it and let Ebay know how you feel about their discriminating against homeschoolers, even if you do not shop on ebay.

If you are interested in listing your Teacher's Editions, you can do that here at Homeschoolblogger on The County Fair Forums.

Thank you for this information about the petition. I was shocked when eBay cancelled my listing because it was a Teacher's edition of Saxon Math 1. First, I wanted to know how many first-graders were registered with eBay. Then, I tried to explain what a vital service the buying and selling of curriculum on eBay is to the homeschool community. Unfortunately, I just got a politely sterile form letter in return. Thanks for the link, I'm on my way there now!

I like Ebay less and less each day. The fees and restrictions are getting out of hand. There are MANY other venues out there for buying and selling that are much more user friendly and I will continue to seek them out rather than go to ebay. Forums are a great way to buy and sell esp. homeschool stuff.

I hope the petition works :) I detest getting those "pat answer" emails from ebay. grrr. Paypal is much more professional when dealing with their concerned members than ebay.

It all seems crazy but still God is in control and this couldn't have happened unless it first went through His fingers. I think we need to ask Him why (not ebay) and what we (Christians) should be doing instead. I am allowing my inventory run low I just have a feeling that I will be going another direction very soon. Personally I think Christians should all take care of each other, like Scripture says to give if asked for it, sharing our blessings. For some reason we, being the King's own children think we are forced to scratch a living in our poverty. We don't receive b/c we don't ask, and when we do receive anything we spend on ourselves :( sigh...

btw just b/c this reminds me of it, but if you track your blogpage with tracking scripts you can see what google searches bring people to your blogpage, I think that is very useful information on what people are buying currently. For ex. keywords to my blogpage have been reading sets like Henty and the Colporteur set, Robinson curric and science. LOTR and Lit Lessons has not been a hit once. Having a few words every once in awhile about your specific items here on HSB costs nothing yet can lead to an actual or affiliate sale outside of eBay. And the words are still in cache mode months after writing the description.
