How Does Our Garden Grow???

Our garden - ah, what shall I say??

As I was tilling, and tilling, and tilling today, I thought about a few things, as I usually do.  One thing is that I thought I had gardened before. No, no, no.  I am now gardening. Last year, we did very little, but had Caleb in June, so that was worth it... and the year or 2 before I was ...hmmm... 6ds2.99 - Isaac in 2003.  Well, I was hot and tired and didn't plant until July, so, there you have it.  Last year, we did something we won't be doing again - SOFTBALL! It was fun, but oooh, how time consuming and we cannot follow someone else's demands on our time! So, voila!

We have 2 garden plots, each 25x75.

    We planted:

corn                                           lima beans

tomatoes                                    broccoli

green beans                                cabbage

beets                                          zucchini

cucumbers                                  acorn squash

butternut squash                      some other kinds of squash

brussel sprouts                        onions

radishes                                   peppers, red and yellow

carrots

We have planted corn 3 times and beans twice.  We are going to plant our last corn crop in the next 2 days, as well as our last bean crop.  We also have more limas, because I didn't realize how much Matt, the peas-carrots-corn-only man, will actually eat lima beans!  Imagine that!! I am happy; I like them too!

I bought watermelon and pumpkin seeds for the Littles to plant, so that should round out the planting in those 'garden areas'.

As for garden area #3: We planted potatoes,  several kinds of lettuce and spinach.  I need to plant more lettuce for a fall crop, because I think we have a 4-footed friend that Ruby (dog) must not ever see in our lettuce. I would guess, anyway, since Matt saw a rabbit last week, so we got a fence around the main garden.  I have to get the smaller one up still.

I have been tilling the rows in between our planted rows with our tiller, and it is GREAT!! No more weeding!! Well, almost none.  We made the rows so that we can irrigate the water down the middle of the plants, so that will be a big help for watering time!

We have some cattle fence panels and Tposts to buy for our tomatoes, and I am thinking we may use the tomato cages on the cukes and zucchini... though I don't think they will work.  We just can't afford to but more cattle panels and Tposts for those too! There are just too many needed! Next year!!

We have had such a good time planning, preparing and planting our garden this year.  I don't think the children probably think it was a good time right off-hand, but we can look back at the talking to Grandpa almost daily for a couple of months to plan and then having him show them how to put up the cattle panels when we visited; getting out there together on Daddy's vacation to get the tilling and planting in; the special moments sharing as we worked side-by-side.

Getting into God's good earth... I'm so thankful for the opportunity!  I am so thankful for the little questions and comments, the comraderie we have already experienced, even with the Littles.  7ds1 ~ BabyBoy aka Caleb was out there today, walking down the rows. I thought it was funny that he actually walked down the rows.  All of the Littles have asked questions about different things, opening up time to learn and grow ourselves.

I think my favorite answer lately has been "Because that's the way God made it to be."  Is that not an awesome answer or what??  Don't you wish you could sometimes just say to yourself, "Self, get over it - That's the way God made it to be!".  It takes all of the responsiblity of explaining some things away, and yet it gives all the sovereignty of God, too.  I used it tonight with 4ds9 aka Eric... he can come up with a bazillion questions sometimes - and right in a row, too, Bless his heart!  Poor, bedraggled, tilled-out Momma just pulled out the trump card and said, "Well, Son, because that is how it is... God's way."

Oh LORD, let me live and submit to 'the way it is' -Your way!

Missing my garden (0:

Wonderful post (0:. I am missing our garden this year. I at first was glad we wouldn't have all the work of a garden. But now I am regretting not having a very big one. We have a teeny tiny one. ((sigh)) So next year I will be more involved and looking forward to it. I never thought I would ever say that, LOL. The Lord does change us , (0: , even when your older.

I actually had a dream the other night that I had planted a big ol' garden and that I was taking pictures of it to post on my blog. Funny and totally unrealistic! I do not have a single bit of green thumbiness in me!
