Some Good Homeschool Questions, by JenIg - And My Answers:

Here is Jenig's contest I missed:
Ok, I'm tagging all of you. I've had a particularly un-stellar last month of 'doing school' and it'd be encouraging to hear what others are up to.  I'm curious about the following (and feel free to make the answers as short or as long as you'd like):

I think the questions merit answering, so I will post my answers now. If you left your answers on JenIg's post - or even on your own blog, please leave us the link to follow and read your answers!

1) Are you the worst homeschool teacher you know?  Or do you feel pretty confident in what you are doing?
No, I don't think so.  I am not the best that I know, and I could do better, but I know that the LORD is faithful and will allow my children to learn from my mistakes, if necessary.
I usually feel pretty confident, but that is based on where my children are, not how I am doing it - or if I am doing it!   Sometimes, I hope no one asks my children what they are studying in school, because most would not consider what we do school. They would think we are having way too much fun.  Other times, they would find a frustrated Mom whose expectations are too high for her sweet dear ones.

2) What do you work on the most in your 'classroom'? Academics or Character Training?

I guess my first inclination would be to say that we work mostly on character training, and that academics are added in, by making everything we do a lesson. However, I don't know that that is true. I don't know how to separate the two. We don't have specific classes, and
I feel that it is always important that our children are in excellent character (or at least learning how to be when they aren't), so I think the two are always combined.
I think, if I had to choose to only teach 1, I would choose to teach character training. Knowledge can be gained until you die, character training is most importantly received at the earliest ages.

3) What is your chosen method of Homeschooling-- and are you happy with what you're doing? Charlotte Mason-- Classical-- Textbook-- Unschooling-- Unit Study-- Car Schooling--  Eclectic --  or something else?

We teach from the Bible, using some of Charlotte Mason's methods and a Unit Study, as well as other ideals from classical, etc, all while Unschooling.  I guess that makes us Eclectic!  I am happy with what we are using, most of the time, because I am not afraid to change midstream if it isn't working.

4) How many kids are you homeschooling right now?

Right now, we are actually homeschooling 5 1/2. 1dd16, 2dd15, 3dd12, 4ds9, 5dd7 and 6ds3.  Children 1-3 have defininte subjects to fulfill, though we do it in an unschooling way, and they are mostly responsible for their assignments.

5) Were you homeschooled as a kid?

No, I went to Catholic school and then ps. I was taught to think and use logic at home, though. It's amazing how many times I will use something I was taught at home, logically, and think, "It sure seems like I was schooled at home."
Matt, dh, was also a ps kid.

6) When did you first learn about 'homeschooling' and what was your initial reaction? (horror? were you skeptical?  love at first sight?)
When I first learned about homeschooling, We had just learned of a drive-by shooting in the Middle School where we lived.  We decided then and there that we were homeschooling.  I went to my first convention when 1dd16 was 3. I was elated to find out that we could actually keep our children home to teach them AND it was LEGAL!!
My Maxim then was, "Why would I sent my little lambs as sheep to the slaughter?".

So, there you have them! A little about me and homeschooling that you may not have known!  Feel free to mosey on over to Jen's blog and read what others have said!

That was interesting to read! I always enjoy quizzes as we can get to learn neat miscellaneous facts about each other. I think character training is a 24/7 job sometimes. LOL. I recently made a "blessings" chart for our kids and daycare kids... We all decided what actions could earn stars... gives them a picture of what "respect" and kindness looks like and it beats me reprimanding all the time. The other day I had to laugh cuz they were "fighting" over who was going to LET the other one go first. haha

Hi Jacque,

I enjoyed reading your latest entries. I like your idea of focusing on certain areas for your various blogs.

Love what you had to say about character training. Of course it is the most important and it can't really be a separate subject in school. I'm a firm believer in coming along the children and speaking truth into their lives. I also think our book choices are so important because they introduce heros and ideas to them that often lead to wonderful discussions. These discussions are what spark wisdom's fire in a youth. I I do believe that there are certain methods of schooling that are better than others for a particular family, but NONE of it can guarantee raising a person of wisdom and virtue without those intimate conversations with mom or dad. I better quit talking and make a post about it. This is very dear to my heart.

Thanks for the sweet, sweet comment on my blog. It will be such fun to meet one day.

fondly,
linda
