A friend of mine ordered the Multi-Grade Unit Study from me:  Around The World In 180 Days by Sherri Payne.  I thought that while I had it in my hot little hands, I would look it over and give you a quick review of it.

Product Description:

This course teaches geography and history on a continent-by-continent basis.

The student learns about the major countries on each continent, as well as the basics of the continent’s history, geography, and culture.

This is not a textbook. It is a series of questions that the student must research in order to answer. Plenty of resources (available in most public libraries) are listed to help the student in his or her research, and the teacher’s edition has all of the answers. Thus, even if the student cannot find the answer, you will not be lost.

The pages in the student book are all three-hole punched and perforated so that the student can fill out the worksheets and compile a notebook which will document his or her work.

The great thing about this curriculum is that it written with a multilevel approach! There are questions for students of all levels, and those levels are clearly marked in the curriculum. As a result, the youngsters can do some of the research, the older students can do different research, and the oldest students can answer the most challenging questions.

This is truly a curriculum that your whole family can study at once!

We have been homeschooling -actually since 1dd16's birth - but, in "school-time", for almost 13 years. We have used a unit study/unschooling approach for about 4 years now.  I am currently planning/creating the unit studies and subjects for this year and reading the Heart of Wisdom Teaching Approach to get a better handle and idea of how to use the Bible as the center of learning and still learn history, geography, language arts, etc.
This curriculum interested me because it is sub-titled, A Multi-Grade Guide For The Study of World History and Cultures. It goes on to say, "Using the Notebook Approach to study the Geography, History, Culture and Current Events of all Seven Continents". It is also published by Apologia Ministries, which speaks volumes.
The Goals include taking each of the 7 continents, one at a time, and studying:
  • Geography,
  • History,
  • Religion,
  • Culture,
  • Key People, and
  • Current Events/Issues
It explains the PURPOSE for Studying World History and Cultures as:
The first reason is: 'These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us...' (1Cor. 10:32). The second is summed up in the words of Jesus - 'Therefore go and make disciples of all nations... teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.' (Matt. 28:19-20)."
She explains that the world is literally at our doorstep in America, which is relatively true today.  She says this to say that we can be missionaries here, even if we never expect to leave our country.
"As citizens of this country and of this world, and as Christians," she explains, "we need to be aware of what, to whom and why so we can be properly 'warned'."
Around the World contains a bound teacher's edition, with answers, and one set of student pages appropriate for those in 4th/5th through high school. The Student workbook is 3-hole punched, so that the pages will go nicely into the 3-ring binder.  You may purchase additional sets of student pages for other students. The questions and activities are labeled by grade level.  Even though there are not individual workbooks for grades K-3/4, this Study is geared toward those grades, too. She lists goals for children these ages/grades. As with all Unit Studies, younger children will greatly benefit from hearing, watching and participating as your older children learn.
   Other resources listed are:
  • Applicable movies,
  • Activities for each subject,
  • Other Books to Read,
  • Missionaries to read about,
  • Other people to read about
  • Events to put onto a Timeline,
  • and more!
Additional suggested resources suggested by the author:
  • 1- 3 ring Binder and tabs for each child,
  • Outline Maps of the continents,
  • Resource books (She lists some from BJUP and A Beka, but also says that your local Library is going to be your best source for books,
  • the Link homeschooler, a free newsletter from Voice of the Martyrs
There is a suggested Time Frame that is easy enough to use, but you can easily adapt this study to fit the plan you have for school.
Whether you homeschool 1 child, as does my friend, or several, as I do, this study will be beneficial to both you and your child/ren. One wonderful thing about Unit Studies is that you can tailor it to the direction you want to go.
We actually sold all of the A Beka history books we had a couple of years ago, and I would be happy to find resources at the Library.
I am contemplating using this curriculum, just for the fact that all of the information is already put together, and it would save me a lot of time researching about these countries and a lot of the different important facts, people and events.  I usually make it up as we go along, so that I can follow the direction of interest.  This book does have a lot of information I will use for many years and through several children, so I think it would be a good buy.
Speaking of 'good buy', the price of the set is a very good buy, at $40.00 for both the178-page bound teacher's edition and 1 Student Workbook.  Each additional Student Workbook is only $10.00.
Follow the link to SoulRestES, and e-mail me if you are interested in this wonderful Study. Mention that you read about it here at HSB1, and I'll even give you a 15% discount on your order - or free shipping (within North America), whichever is greater! How does that sound?
All in all, I would definitely recommend this Unit Study.

We are closet homesteaders. What I mean is that we seem to always live in the city but we read magazines like Mother Earth News and Backwoods Home and think about someday....

It was great to see the pic's of your family. I'll have to keep checking back for more homesteading and homeschooling news. :-)
