We have 3 beautiful, maturing young ladies in our home, ages 16, 15 and 12. Those of us with girls know what a pure delight and utter exasperation little girls can be. As they mature from the bouncing baby girl, they go through so many changes.I enjoy a pretty close relationship with each of my girls. I am thankful for the way God has brought about His love between each of us. There is nothing of more beauty and grace than the budding and blossoming of girlhood. ~Mabel Hale~
Our 3 oldest daughters went yesterday to visit my Grandparents, their Great-Grandparents. On their way there, they found out that my Grandmother's sister, their great-great-Aunt, had died that morning. My Grandmother, who is now the last one left of her immediate family, was bitter and had nothing nice to say about her sister. Understandably, as she does not know the LORD, she went on and on about her. Now, the last time we were there, we found out that she was 1 of 7 children - boy, was I surprised! As a Mother, she chose to have only 2 boys. As we went through the old pictures of Grandpa's and Grandma's family 'til now, the girls and I listened as some comments were made of the heartache of years lost. Because of this, I was not surprised at the news the girls gave me of Grandma's feelings. I said all of that to say this: Yesterday, I had 3 dear daughters of God tell me, each at a time when we were alone, about my Grandmother and her feelings. 1dd16 said, "Mom, all I could think of was I hope my siblings don't talk about me like that when I die." She went on to try to explain, "You know, I mean, I hope they don't feel that way about me. I hope we are closer." The fact that they all told me about it shows me they are concerned about Grandma. Girlhood blends the sweet, familiar traits of girlhood with the grace and power of womanhood. ~Mabel Hale~
We have been praying that God would send someone to them to give the perfect words so that they will receive Him. 2dd15 sent a lovely 2-3 page letter of encouragement, telling Grandma that she knows she doesn't have too many more days on the earth, and she really wants to see her again in heaven. It was well-received, and we are waiting to see what God will do next.In an effort to meet my daughters' hearts, I have become more available to them. I have done this more and more in the past couple of years with my 2 oldest. Then, I realized that I was leaving out 3dd12. So, I turned my heart toward her more. Now, I am seeing a 6-year-old who is in more need of Mommy attention. For some reason, I don't have to make this effort with the boys. I see 5dd6 frustrated, and I know I need to encourage her and plant a lovingkindness and assurance that I believe in her. I decided to read Beautiful Girlhood, by Mabel Hale. It speaks of quieter times, when children were children and little girls were bouncy, rosy-cheeked little girls. I can't wait to get into it! From the Editors:
In an effort to get in touch with those simpler ideas and the Beautiful Girlhood my dd's deserve, I am reading this book. I don't mind being "quaint", and I don't mind if they are either! I know it will help me better understand and convey Biblical ideals and guidance to the beautiful girls I have been blessed with.Imagine a time before shopping malls, cellular telephones, and women's professional sports. Imagine a time when girls sewed their clothing, played a parlor piano for entertainment, and found limited career opportunities. This is the time Mabel Hale wrote Beautiful Girlhood. What could a book from that era possibly say to girls of the twenty-first century? Plenty. Even though fashions, technology, methgids of communication - society in general- has changed dramatically since Mabel Hale's day, human nature hasn't. While some aspects of Beautiful Girlhood may seem quaint and dated to modern readers, there us still much to be gained frrom its pages. The author, in her original foreward, said, This little book is born of a desire
In the early twentieth century, many girls were guided toward Christian womanhood by Mabel hale's words. It is our hope that new generation of girls may find the same benefit from her timeless theme. to help and encourage our girls who are struggling with the problems taht come up in teens. Youth hasits problems, its heartaches and disappointments. It is not always a smooth path to the per- fection of womanhood. If what I have written should help some girl to a nobler life and truer ideals, then I shall feel that it has accomplished the task I have set for it to do. ~The Editors
