As most of us get back into the swing of school, we may find there are some attitudes to check. It may be yours or your children's. I know at this time, if I am unprepared to teach, I feel very overwhelmed and a lot of stress. This will, obviously, affect my attitude. I may be short and snap at my children or even find many other things to occupy my thoughts, so I am not thinking about being behind and unprepared. Either of those outlets are not conducive to a happy start to a school year or to positive attitudes by my children. They will imitate the stress they can see in me. Thankfully, I am not feeling that kind of stress this year. I don't think I felt it last year, either. Ever since we started a more relaxed form of education, we have kept busy with school, but not burdened by it. I also have been reading the Heart of Wisdom Teaching Approach, and she addresses letting the Lord lead your homeschool, which is what we have been trying to do for several years now. I know that some of the burden may depend on the state you live in. I mean the state, like we live in Indiana. Indiana does not require any record-keeping, except attendance, and that is not much of a burden. Now, I believe we should keep more records than that, but I know that some states place such a harsh burden on parents, that it is an unnecessary burden. The other 'state that you may live in' that struck me as I typed that in was the "state" of your home. Is your home conducive to a stress-free homeschool day? We homeschool at the table, the couch, on their beds... wherever learning is best at the time. That means that, though it will never be spotless, sparkling and shiny 100% of the time, our home has to be free of clutter and dirt. Clutter only causes distractions! Another question to ask yourself is, "Is the tv on during homeschool time?". That is a major distraction! I know that it can be a challenge when you have smaller Littles underfoot, who are not ready for schooling, but they will learn best at your side or your feet or in the arms of a sibling than in front of a tv show or video. So, what do you do to de-stress your home and life, so you can enjoy your children and this precious time of learning with them? 1. Early in the morning (yes, it really is best!), spend time alone with God. Seek His wisdom in His word for those sins that so easily beset you. Ask Him for direction for the day. 2. Know what you believe and why you believe it when it comes to teaching your children. Search Scriptures and seek the Lord, so that when trials come, you are well-prepared to face them. 3. Have a plan ready (at least) a week in advance. I do not mean a plan written in stone, but some direction in which you see your children and your study heading. Some days will be Play-Doh days, park days or play outside days. Some days you will notice child 3 needs some attention and focus a lot of your attention there. Ask the Lord in advance to show you these times, so that you can fulfill His plan to its fullest. 4. Try to stick to a Breakfast/Lunch schedule, so your children aren't hungry and crabby. 5. My children hardly took scheduled naps, but usually required sleep at some time during the day. Make sure they nap and get an early bedtime, with a full night's rest. -and, you, too! 6. Be flexible. 7. Do not be afraid to ask for advice or help from someone you trust. Sometimes, we get off-track and need a little encouragement. Let the Lord bless you and others by encouraging each other in your walk with the Lord and in your homeschool. 8. If this applies, include your husband in your plans and concerns. I know that moms are the primary care-givers and home teachers. I also know that sometimes Dad doesn't have time or may even seem uninterested in what is going on in homeschool. Spark that interest by including him in your plans and excitement. - Even your discouragements. Let him know he is someone you need to talk to and include. He may not have any advice, but it will open a new window where you can talk about the most important people in your lives - your children. 9. If you have older children (high school), don't send them off to be with their friends; instill the importance of their place in your family and how God put them there to share in the teaching, planning and praying for your homeschool. Let them know you count on them as helps in all you do at home. 10. Thank God we can homeschool. Remember how blessed we are to be able to keep our precious children home. Make a goal sheet, if you need a reminder of why you are keeping them home and not sending them off for someone else to train. I will be addressing children's attitudes next.... if I can.... but I think our attitudes are a catalyst for blessing or cursing our days! Let's all ask the Lord to bless our days and our homeschool year! Leave a Comment { Last Page } { Page 495 of 595 } { Next Page } |
