Walking Therein

Books, Books, Books... How have they affected your Life?

I was tagged by an especially sweet sister in Christ several weeks ago(ahem). I am finally feeling up to sitting at this computer desk! I had seen the same list at Higher Up and Further In, another SSIC's blog. I had a hard time answering some of them, because I mostly read books to teach or learn about God and such. I occasionally will read a fiction book, but I really do enjoy the non-fiction.

ONE BOOK THAT CHANGED YOUR LIFE (besides the BIBLE):

*The Elijah Catalog...... really

and *Teaching the Trivium by the Bluedorns

*They changed a lot of how I view homeschooling. As far as life-changing media- Vision Forum CD's - and Doug Phillips-  are truly responsible for a lot of my vision being brought into focus to God's plan for His People.

ONE BOOK THAT YOU’VE READ MORE THAN ONCE:

*I barely have time to read all the books I want to once!

*I find it's easier to listen to CDs or tapes over.

TWO BOOKS YOU’D WANT ON A DESERT ISLAND:

*The Bible

*I'd have plenty of time to read the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, then, I suppose!

Do photo albums count as books?

*How about The Complete Idiot's Guide to Turning a Desert Island Into Your Own Personal Oasis!

ONE BOOK THAT MADE YOU LAUGH:

*The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien

ONE BOOK THAT MADE YOU CRY:

*Truthfully, I love reading my daughter's blogs... they make me cry sometimes.  Some of yours do too!

ONE BOOK YOU WISH HAD BEEN WRITTEN:

*I think all of the answers can be found in one book alone: The Bible... we just don't look there first!

ONE BOOK YOU WISH HAD NEVER BEEN WRITTEN:

*Honestly, sin is here, and I couldn't get back far enough in history to name the one that impacted the human race in the worst way. Satan will just keep trying, because he has always known his days are numbered!

ONE BOOK THAT YOU ARE CURRENTLY READING:

*So Much More by Anna Sofia Botkin and Elizabeth Botkin

ONE BOOK YOU HAVE BEEN MEANING TO READ:

*Jocelyn's novel, A Long Road....... I have read some of it.... it is REALLY good! Actually, it pretty much falls into the make-you-laugh, make-you-cry and currently-reading categories, too!

Books, books, books.... Books affect life. Books affect culture. Whether we love to read or just do it because we have to, books affect our lives. The most influential book to affect our lives must be the Bible, though! We can have our favorites, but nothing will change history and our attitudes like the WORD of God.
I have found this especially important as my children are growing older. I came to really know the Lord just before we got married, and was told to spend time in prayer and read my Bible, but really, what did that mean to me? I gleaned most of what I knew from church services, and did not understand the responsibility I had to personally train myself in the Word. Now, as I have realized that in the past 5 years, I have passed it to my children and ask them (almost) daily if they have read their Bibles.
They are to read their Bibles, by the way, not a devotional book. I truly want them to learn the actual WORD, not someone's well-meaning opinion of a passage. In addition to that, I am not big on bringing all kinds of worldly problems into their minds, just to apply the WORD to the issue. A lot of "teen devotionals" as well as children's, bring in all kinds of sin that I don't even want them to read about... just so the author can explain how to handle that sin. I say why let the sin enter their minds in the first place?
I would rather them read the Bible, and if they have questions, they can ask their dad or me what something means. God gave us the responsibility to train them in His ways, not some wonderful author's ways.
If God's WORD truly has all of the answers for today, then, why do we look to self-help books for the answers? I think it is ok to look here and there, but we really must look at others' opinion through the light of God's WORD. If we cannot do that, then we must just stick to the Bible alone. I also do not think that children -yes, even young adult children- are always equipped to read someone else's opinions with Biblical discernment.
Truly, the Bible must be the main study book, with devotionals as secondary ideas. What good will reading a devotional book be for them when they stand in heaven and meet all of these historic Bible people! When they are facing things in life and they need the comfort of God's WORD... they need His WORD hidden in their hearts.

thanks for taking the time to post this.

I am very amazed and excited about your daughters' blogs. I especially like how your 2dd honored you today in saying that you are the reason she loves God and seeks to please Him. I pray that one day my dds will love God with all their hearts and seek nothing more than to please Him.

How did the Elijah catalogue change your life? I have never seen it, but have heard it mentioned a few times. What is it about "Teaching the Trivium" that attracts you to it and changed the way you homeschool?

I appreciate you and your family.

In Christ,
Carol

I totally agree!

The Bible is indeed the Best Book!!! Sadly, so many people get captivated easily by this author...that author, while neglecting the Word of God. They have time to read books after books by famous preachers/authors but they don't have time to read the Bible. In addition, many people just simply & totally believe in these authors' words without comparing to the Scriptures. Many have been led astray as a result.

I think I agree with most of this!

Hi Jacque,

When I read your post here, I couldn't believe how much of it was the answers that I would give. When you started with the Bible and then the Elijah company catalogue, I went "Yes, me too!" I still have an old catalogue that I won't part with. The Bluedorns, Tolkien and I would add in the Narnia Chronicles too as favourites.

Your daughters are writing alot, are they? Has Jocelyn finished her book?
