Do Your Children Reflect What You Believe?

1:41 PM, Saturday, October 21, 2006 .. Posted in Oh LORD, Help Me Live Biblically .. 6 comments .. Link
There has been quite a stir at Jocelyn's blog about the topic of halloween. I have not blogged about it, but I think she does an excellent job of telling on me, about what I believe. Her replies to comments are even more insightful.
I was actually raised catholic and attended a catholic school until I entered the pss in 7th grade. I attended a catholic college in Indy for a couple of years before quitting and moving to NM. This is where I met the 2 most important men in my life: Jesus, My Savior, and Matt, my husband. Ok, you ask, how is it I was raised catholic and 'met' Jesus then? Well, I had a head knowledge of Jesus growing up, but not a heart relationship, to make it cut and dry.
Because of Matt's charismatic Christian upbringing, he told me a lot about the true origins of halloween, the catholic church and other controversial topics like the Rapture and Revelation.  He didn't expect me to just take his word for it, and being an avid reader, I sought out Scripture and other books or history to study, with his help and that of his Mother and Grandmother.
You can go today, on Google.com, and search wicca or pagan or witch or similar words and find out what all the excitement is in the satanic community about halloween.  I didn't have access to the internet in 1988, but now we do, in case you have any doubts that it isn't the fun-loving, let's dress-up-in-our-Christian- hero-costumes- and-have-a- hallelujah-party holiday!
So the question is: Do Your Children Reflect What You Believe? Ok, WHAT do you believe, and is it worthy of reflection?
I feel this question is very important to every homeschool family.  I thought about this because of a blurb in a post by Aligirl.  Aligirl left a comment on Jocelyn's halloween post, letting her know that she posted some
*serious* information about halloween -that I feel EVERY BELIEVER should look at! (it includes: the origins of: costumes, jack-o-lanterns, trick-or-treat).
Anyway, the post I am referring to is a bit down the page, and she says, "But the embelishment mirrored what she (we thought) about public schools.   I love the parentheses that tell us that her young daughter was only mimicking what she has heard Mommy and Daddy say.  It impressed upon me the realism that our children *are* going to mimic someone or something... will it be cartoon characters (even 'Christian' ones) or other teachers or popular people in society? Will it be litle humanist johnny or little rebellious suzy?
This is of great importance to have an understanding of, not only as parents, but as homeschoolers. Most of the time, homeschoolers do not have the same philosophy of foregoing discipline and then sending them off to daycare or school to be disciplined and trained. We must do it at home. We must keep order and discipline while teaching the ways of the Lord. Without the first 2, the 3rd cannot be taught.
I did not include Jesus as a role model in that list up there, because, until our infants or toddlers have a clear understanding of who God and Jesus are (only by our example and teaching), they can't see God or Jesus in action in persona. It has to be me - or you, our husbands and children,-anyone we allow to be in authority over or spend time with our children-  living the Word to them. That means, you have to have a tight rein on the older siblings --- and, especially yourself!
Infants and even toddlers are not likely to understand who Jesus or God are. Yes, they can recite and believe that Jesus loves them and God created the heavens and the earth, but it won't hit them for awhile. That's ok. That is what training is. That is why we are to live holy lives before them. That is why we keep them home and intentionally become the main influences on their little minds.
If you have just found a Biblical way of living and homeschooling, it will take some time for your older children to 'fall in line' - just ask 1dd16 and 2dd15!! I have found, though, that our God is faithful to us, as we are faithful to Him, regardless of our mistakes.
I found out the hard way that even attending church and homeschooling does not mean you are the main influences in your children's lives.
It is only after persistence in the WORD and pulling them out of the world that we see it coming to fruition in their lives.  I mean pulling them out of the world in the sense of what the Bible considers the world, not what we or our churches consider the world.
We see children (and adults) of all ages living sinful lives and making unbelievable choices (like I did when I was a child-teen) and we don't understand how they can be so 'stupid' not to see what they are doing. And, what do they know of sin? They are following someone, something. Christians who get caught up in known sin, and you just want to smack them.... Who are they mimicking? What or whose definition of sin are they accepting? Certainly not the Bible's.
So, call my children clones or brainwashed or even trained seals... That's ok with me. They will mimic and reflect someone for a large part of their lives. I only hope to be worthy of mimicking and to direct them to the true person we all want to reflect, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, Savior and Soon-Returning King.
Seeking to glorify Him....

We don't do Halloween. It upsets me very much that many Christians do after they know the truth. If they don't know that is one thing but if they do know they should give up the holiday. The Bible talks about the traditions of men. I am also sick and tired of people having the "Fall Festivals" at church about the same time as Halloween. How about we just start calling it what it is - Halloween - and not kid ourselves.

OK, I will get off one of my many soapboxes now....

satanic holidays

I totally agree with everything said! You might remember last Easter when I took my stand against the easter bunny and I got attacked for it and how there's nothing wrong with it.....because I tend to be a little week in my own convictions, I started to think maybe there wasn't anything wrong with it if we took what Satan intended for evil and made it good....think about that a minute! How stupid! Why on earth would we want to take garbage and turn it into a diamond? Good grief what fraud! I think Christians who celebrate these holidays in these ways are fooling themselves. How are we to be seperate from the world when we try to keep up with them with such close alternatives? Why do we need an alternative? Why not take a stand and be bold like Jocelyn has and not back down!
Great joh with your teaching and training!

Jacque, I must say, that I am glad that your children reflect you and love their family. It is encouraging for others of us out here whose children are still young. I hope my children love their family as much as yours do when they are teenagers. I love that your kids post about God and Christian themes. I've really enjoyed Jocelyn's and Rachel's especially, at least those are the ones I tend to read since they come and invite me to see new posts.

anyway...talk to ya later.

Carol
