Thanksgiving Plans

Here it is -what? 3 days? before Thanksgiving, and I am on my regular - 'behind schedule'. I have never been good at planning school around holidays, though I wish I were. Better late than never to get started doing it, so, we are going to do some creative work, delve into some literature, and just do whatever we are lead to do in the next week. Jocelyn has decided that she wants to tinker on the piano, so I will assign her a nice (short & simple) Thanksgiving holiday song to plunk out.
I remember learning all of those patriotic songs for a Thanksgiving play in the first or second grade (and loving it!), so I am going to see what I can dig up in that area. I have not really been good at that either - teaching seasonal songs.  It is fun and a part of our heritage, so I am going to definitely incorporate that along with a few worship songs of thanks. Guess it's time to buy a cd, huh?
We have some Thanksgiving-related resources laying around, so we are doing a rather loose study for Thanksgiving. We will read some of the books listed below. The older children will give reports on information that aren't written to the Littles.
We will do a timeline, with information about people in America before the Pilgrims and after. They will be studying worship, community, food, and how things were in general in America and other parts of the world at that time - not too in-depth.
We will memorize a couple of Bible verses on being thankful and write them out.
We will be putting all of this into a binder/folder to include all writings, drawings and other ideas for each child to keep. It will go into their files.

The older girls are already helping with the menu plan and will be shopping with me tomorrow. They can pretty much make whatever favorites they like, as long as the meal is balanced - LOL! We could do 1/2 desserts, but...
Here is our menu - at present:
Turkey                           Vegetable Stuffing
Green Salad                   Green Bean Casserole
Corn on the Cob             Peas
Honey-Glazed Carrots     Sweet Potatoes
Mashed Potatoes              Gravy
Rolls
Cranberry Fluff                Pumpkin Pie
Pecan Pie                       Coconut Cream Pie
Whipped Topping
So, there you have it. We at least have several ideas to choose from. As long as we reflect on and thank God for all He is to us and how He provides for us, we will learn a lot.

In addition to these plans, we had a wonderful time at my Grandparents' 65th Anniversary Celebration. Our children got to meet a few relatives they had seen in photos, but had not met irl. They were excited as these older relatives pored over the Service Album and the Memory Album from when my Grandparents met and married. Many of these relatives were just small children at the time. It was wonderful for our children to see the impact these albums they had worked on so diligently being loved by everyone.
I was so happy to get to sit and talk with them, because I haven't seen many of them in 15 years or more.  It was a great time of celebration! Praise our Lord!

Be Blessed!
