HOW 4-Step Learning Process - The HEART OF WISDOM TEACHING APPROACH

12:37 PM, Monday, November 27, 2006 .. Posted in Training Hearts and A Heart of Wisdom Education .. 2 comments .. Link
Last evening, I was looking over the Poetry Linguistics prize Jocelyn won in a contest on Jenig's blog a few months back, and as I read through the instructions about memorizing one poem every day, I thought about the Scriptures I wanted to memorize instead. God just works that way. So, this morning, I went to Biblegateway and found what I needed. We will be starting each morning now with more than just a Bible reading.
We will be memorizing Scriptures each day and following Robin's 4-Step Process and schedule plan in HOWTA. That means applying what we read to activities/scrapbooking, etc. to teach each other what we each learned from the reading.

The scriptures we are starting with are:
Matthew 6:7-13 The Lord's Prayer
Exodus 20:1-17 The Ten Commandments
Deuteronomy 6:1-13
Deuteronomy 11:18-28
Psalm 1
Psalm 23
The HOW 4-Step Process of learning covers the 4 'learning styles' and also the way God taught His people and Jesus taught as He did. I have always hated the whole 'learning styles' implications, because there are so many different ones and they can be confusing to parents whose children don't fit one mold exactly (which most do not). Besides, God is the Creator of our children, and if I am following His plan, seeking Him and learning about my children daily, He will show me what I don't see. I can tell you what affinities our different children have. I pay attention to their likes, dislikes and what they really like doing when they learn best. I didn't see all of that so much when we used the Textbook Approach, FYI.
The 4 teaching steps are: Excite, Examine, Expand, Excel.  She gives descriptions of each step and examples of activities you can use in that step. Through this Plan, 1) you Motivate their interest and learning by making the lesson meaningful to their lives; 2) you give them the Facts from God's view as you teach them the topic; 3) they then Practice what they just learned by doing assignments, hands-on learning, etc., and finally, 4) they Apply the lessons, reinforcing their understanding of what you taught them by teaching themselves or others.  These 4 Steps are desigend to teach each of the 4 learning styles.
You can apply the HOW Approach by teaching through and culminating many different teaching approaches: Delight-Directed studies -which is the most beneficial way for a child to learn; Unit Studies - an easier way to teach multiple levels of children in a homeschool; the Charlotte Mason method - a truly wonderful method in the Gentle Art of Learning; Writing to learn; and Critical Thinking and Logic.
You can read more about this method, its components and see the Table of Contents at The Heart of Wisdom Store.  To examine the HOWTA for yourself, you can also get a 70-page excerpt to download.  This 500 page resource is available as a softcover book or as a downloadable e-book.
for His glory-

This is one of the reasons I love Bible Quiz Team... my children are memorizing ACTS this year. (Only the first 11 chapters, but they are REALLY getting it down WELL!)

P.S. I got my CDs I ordered... I can't wait to start listening to them!

I've been meaning to re-read my copy of HOWTA as well and really start implementing some of the practical methods. Reading the book was fabulous and gave me a good sense of where we want to go, but I need to get down to the nitty gritty too!
I just mapquested and you are about 3 hours north of me. I would love to meet someday, I have appreciated so much that you have written about academics as well as health and nutrition and so many things, a face to face chat would be delightful! (I've been so impressed by your daughters as well!) Maybe we can work something out this spring or summer.
Blessings,
Angel
