Bible Study Time- This Is School

3:36 PM, Thursday, December 7, 2006 .. Posted in Training Hearts and A Heart of Wisdom Education .. 1 comments .. Link
I am still trying to get the hang of our Bible Study Time. We are following a loose schedule of the Heart of Wisdom plan. I use the term loose, mainly because I am using the Bible, the leading of the Lord, and my own little brain, though we are following the HOW method!
No, really, it is going fairly well. I just have to incorporate some more high school-level activities for Amanda and Jocelyn. Jocelyn - our resident artiste - cannot draw unless inspired apparently. She was quite funny giving her simple "marker-rendition of Abraham and Isaac climbing Mount Moriah to sacrifice" to her little sister. She refused to put it in with her other creations.  I'm sure she doesn't think it all too funny.
I have been making clip-art for Genesis. Yes, I did search the internet for pictures and clip-art, etc. I didn't find a lot of what we are looking for. So, we will improvise or create. Now, I am creating Clip-art. Coloring pages? I'm still debating if I want to take on the task. I think I will go ahead and make simple things like an altar, baskets, bowls, fire, etc. I don't know if I can do it on paint. Well, ok, I could do it on paint, but it's the simplicity I am looking for. I could just draw them and copy them.
I asked Jocelyn to do it, but she said she has lost her talent. Right.  She (admittedly) doesn't want to. I asked her what curriculum she was going to use when she teaches her children the Bible or if she just planned to buy some. She said, "Well, I'll use yours, Mom."  Amanda, who knew that was coming, lost it - and so did I. I tried to get out the fact that this is why she is going to help me..... hahaha...in-between laughs and giggles.  What a precious moment as she realized what she said!
We are enjoying all learning together and learning the Bible verse-by-verse, instead of as a bunch of stories. We are going into the next few chapters about Jacob and Esau, and when Isaac lies to Abimilech and says that Rebekah is his sister. I hadn't known that and am flabbergasted that he did it after his father did it -twice!
So, trying to get our children to understand that reading the Bible - all 5 chapters - and writing about it or drawing it or whatever we come up with IS SCHOOL is my main objective right now. Hannah, 6, did enjoy it when I started to help her cut out her drawings and put them onto her picture page.  They actually are enjoying the readings. We take turns, and I enjoyed hearing Eric, 9, reading out loud and figuring out the big Bible names!
Other than all of that, I am still struggling with getting courses in writing and planning lessons for everyone. I wish I had done it 10 years ago, when we had fewer children, but, hey, we only have 5 we are teaching now, and 3 of them aren't yet in high school! So, getting this underway now will still save us time when we have the 3 Littles of 'school-age'! YAY! Looking at it that way makes it seem so much easier!
I am having the girls make up some. At present, Jocelyn is researching different avenues of publishing and journalism. That in itself is a Research Course! LOL!
for His glory-

Hey there!

11:33 PM, Friday, December 8, 2006 .. Posted by amada
It's been awhile since I visited. I read your post yesterday :) We are working on getting back to the Bible in schooltime. We consistently read at family time and talk about the Lord through the day, but hadn't had been diligent to commit ourselves to study as a school pursuit lately because of all the changes in our lives in the last months. I'm glad to be back into the Word with the kiddos again.

Just thought I'd say hi, and that I love Doorposts and use them too & that we do celebrate Christmas, but I totally see your points. Your daughter is so sweet to leave me comments all the time.

Come see my couch contest!

Love in Christ,
Amy
