YIKES! A Public-School-Sanctioned Pagan Christmas Ritual!
I blogged about the pagan origins of our beloved Christmas holiday traditions a few days ago, after reading Jenig's thoughts on the holiday. It has been a good discussion, and I received a personal email as well. I am not looking to revisit the discussion, but I found this link, Pagan Christmas ritual pressed on young kids on Gena's Blog, and it does go with what we were discussing, so I am putting in a new post instead of adding to the other one. There are several facets to the article:
- one being the proselytization of elementary ps children to the "real meaning of christmas" through pagan rituals;
- the second is the introduction of Naturespirit, a pagan religious group that "welcomes diverse people of all ages and religious traditions who feel Nature is a vital part of spirituality. They affirm the spiritual teachings of earth-centered and Pagan traditions which celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the rhythms of Nature.";
- and third, it introduces Wiccan high priestess Selena Fox who would like to share how 21st century citizens can take part in the ancient rituals, to "re-paganize" Christmastime. Take a look at the list and see how many are familiar.
I am giving this information, not as a "history of" the christmas traditions, but rather a "look what they are still doing" with the pagan celebrations. I am also saying that this is ps-sanctioned, because if they distribute it, they sanction it. Personally, I have felt for a long time that we need to get it that there is a difference between a public entity and a private entity, even in the school system. If Christians can demand prayer and such, so can other religions. Why do we get so upset about it? This does not surprise me, but Christian parents need to be aware that this is fair and legal. Expect it. for His glory-

While I agree that this is not something I would want my child given, I first heard this story told from a different point of view. The fliers from not for profit groups that are sent home with children carry a disclaimer that the school district neither endorses nor pays for the message. At one time the school didn't let any religious groups send fliers home, but a Christian group believed that they were being discriminated against. If other non-profit groups could send fliers home, they should be able to too. Facing a court battle, the school district chose to allow religious groups to send fliers home. We won! The consequences weren't well thought out but...
Anyway, this is an indictment of the public schools in that it is impossible for a government mandated system to exist as a values free intity. But, in this case the school wasn't pushing paganism. Christians just need to seek alternate education for their kids. PERIOD!

I saw this also. I didn't feel a bit shocked. I just thought "Hey, that is true, SOOO, why not teach them the real orgins?" I do feel like they are trying to convert the children. Praise God for homeschooling.
