"Although I Daresay..."

Rachel and I were talking this morning, because she wanted to go outside and run. She had come back from our neighbor's with her sisters after helping him clean up around his yard, and she wanted to go outside to run, she said...... and added, "Although I daresay, lifting those rocks today was quite a workout."

"Although I daresay?" I repeated. Yes, she said, as she repeated it again.

I love the way our children talk. I truly do. They don't have the "teen lingo" of the world wrapped around their vocabulary like most their age - and even many my age! They have the vocabulary we have given them and that which comes from reading great books.

My sister and a friend remarked a couple of years ago that Amanda and Jocelyn have their own language, after they said something that is just a commonplace phrase in our home. It was cute. It was also a blessing to me that they are in the world but not of it. They were talking as mature young ladies, which is none too common today for girls of their age. It was a blessing to me that God is working in their lives and their hearts, even when Mom is 1500 miles away and they are out on the town with relatives and friends.

So, what we teach is important, but what we live - or what we don't live - is more important, as it will shape the hearts of our children, not just their minds. Education is so important, but one can always learn about math, science, literature, etc. Taking advantage of the time we have with our children before they become adults is of utmost importance to who they will be as followers of the One True God and trainers of our grandchildren in the manner of the Lord. Training them in maturity from the earliest age is something forbidden by society today, because we must let them be "free to be themselves". Hogwash. Free to be themselves! I have been around some children who live in that freedom, and they are truly terrifying creatures! God gave us the Handbook with which to train them up to be mature in Him, and we must do it from the earliest ages!

I remember as a young mother, responding to praise or criticism of how we were training our children, saying, "Yes, well, the thing is that you can't tell as you train them. You have their young life to train them, and if you mess that up, you find out when you can't go back and re-do it." I did not want to regret what I could not re-do. Praise the Lord that He, in His wisdom and mercy, has re-done some of my mistakes as He has grown me in my parenting!

So, we must trust in Him and follow His leading, regardless of rules of behavior. Society's rules, relatives' rules, our church's rules, other Christians' rules. If it's in the Word, do it.  If it's not, don't. If you don't know, ask God; He will surely not leave you to fend for yourself. He sent His Son to die for our salvation, and He will certainly answer you on something you are struggling with!

I knew - and still know - the joys of watching Littles as they play and learn, but to experience the maturity and majesty of a relationship with a lovely young man or young woman trained in righteousness, not just christianity, is a feeling that is hard to describe. Of course, our children are normal children who act silly and do things for which they must repent, but the glimpses I get into their maturity and who they are becoming is as awesome as experiencing the sunrise on a mountaintop or the serenity of waves crashing of the ocean. It is a true joy that we can help to create. - As we follow the Lord's plans for their lives.
Be blessed!

Very cute! But please tell my MIL that "daresn't" is not a word! lol (You daresn't say anything to offend) iiiiick! I have to agree that reading living books has increased the kids' use of large words in everyday life, even in my now 6yr old. Thank God that I can home educate!

Beautifully expressed. I have seen some of this in my own children, and it really is the joy in my life.

I myself hope to learn more vocab as I teach my kids. I hope to learn a lot from it. Grammer would be good. I thought I was soooo lucky in school. I had all the "right" teachers who could care less about grammer in high school. Lucky me right? nope! Now there I was, thrown in college with the worst grammer problems. People probably talk to me and think - you want to teach your kids!? Although I did get great grades. I just did not learn much and retain it. I look forward to learning with my kids. It is always nice to see them be different from the world. Something to be proud of! There are so many ways we could go on this one. From how they interact with all ages to being respectful etc etc.
